1997 - Lord Gyllene
The winner
Sadly that 1997 National was Lord Gyllenes only appearance at Aintree. Leg trouble kept him off the course the following season and when he did return to action in December 1998 he was pitched in at the deep end in a very competitive Tommy Whittle Chase at Haydock against the likes of The Grey Monk, 1998 National hero Earth Summit and the then best chaser in the land Suny Bay. He was close up until the thirteenth fence before he faded to finish a very distant fourth of five. He was pulled up in what was his final racecourse appearance in the Grand National Trial at Uttoxeter in February 1999. He reportedly injured his pelvis and missed the rest of that and the following season. He was eventually moved to Martin Pipe in the summer of 2000 and even held an entry for the 2001 National. However even Pipe was not able to get him race fit and he was retired to his owners estate. He died in December 2016 aged twenty eight.
Leading Fancies
I am not going to dwell on the events of the Saturday - we all know what happened and thank god we were able race at the unfashionable time of 5.00pm on a Monday evening as Aintree opened its doors to the local community. Two of the runners who were being saddled on the Saturday when it all went horriby wrong, former Scottish National winner Belmont King and outsider Over The Stream were not asked to return so a field of thrity six went to post. GO BALLISTIC was made favourite on the basis of his fourth place in the Gold Cup and two victories at Ascot. SUNY BAY was second best in the market and a popular choice on the basis that he was a classy grey who had beaten a small field in the Grand National Trial at Haydock including LO STREGONE (who had missed out on the race last year at the last minute). Leading Irish challenger was WYLDE HIDE who was back after unseating at the Canal last year and he had added another Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park to his record. Other fancied runners included a former useful long distance hurdler AVRO ANSON who had once lost the Stayers Hurdle in the stewards room but who was having only his sixth race over fences. ANTONIN, a very useful chaser in 1994 but unplaced in this race last year had moved to Ireland when his trainer relocated. He had run away with the Punchestown Grand National Trial in February where he had a former Gold Cup winner, the lightly raced MASTER OATS trailing in his wake. It was an open contest and one with very sound credentials was the ex-New Zealand chaser LORD GYLLENE who was making his AIntree debut. He had won the Grand National Trial at Uttoxeter before beng surprisingly beaten by the absent Seven Towers in the Midlands National.

The Class of 1997
ANTONIN (FR) (1988) ch g Italic (FR) - Pin'Hup (FR) (Signanti (FR)) - Won 9 chases between 1991 & 1999. Next to useless as a hurdler but a revelation over fences winning four times during his novice campaign. Missed Cheltenham and Aintree but was sent to Punchestown where he finished second behind Viking Flagship in a Grade 3 event. The following season was his "annus marabilis" with wins in the Racing Post Chase and a very comfortable victory in an albeit substandard National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival. On his next start he just failed to catch Ushers Island in the Whitbread. Not quite so good thereafter but continuously campaigned in top handicaps. He was placed in the Racing Post Chase and finished behind Rough Quest in the National Hunt Handicap Chase. His two trips to Aintree were disappointing never getting into contention either time making mistakes and twice finishing unplaced. His trainer relocated to Ireland in 1996 and he enjoyed one final day in the sun when he slammed a good field (including a former Gold Cup winner Master Oats) to win Punchestown's Grand National Trial in February 1997 (I was there, my one visit). He stayed in training for a couple of more years but didn't show much. Sadly he met his end at the La Touche Cup over the banks course at Punchestown in May 1999 when he suffered internal injuries.
BISHOPS HALL (1986) br g Pimpernels Tune - Mariners Dash (Master Buck) - Won 11 chases between 1990 & 1999. Having showed nothing in NH flat races and over hurdles he was actually quite a useful chaser. Ran in 1992 Topham when still a novice, pulled up in that years Hennessy Gold Cup and won a handicap chase at 1993 Punchestown festival. He even tried his luck at Auteuil that summer but pulled up in a valuable contest. However he is best remembered by National anoraks as one of a select band of runners who twice came to grief at the very first fence - in 1995 he was one of seven fallers and a year later he unseated. Did make it a case of third time lucky and nearly got round (pulled up two out) in 1997. Last ran over rules at Killarney in June 1999 but later won four point to points between 2000 & 2003.
BUCKBOARD BOUNCE (1986) b g Buckskin (FR) - Lucie Fort (Lucifer (USA)) - Won NHF, hurdle & 5 chases between 1991 & 1998. Won Grade 3 Drinmore Chase at Fairyhouse on his chase debut in November 1992. Unplaced in 1992 Supreme Novices hurdle but fared much better on his second visit to the UK when he filled the runners up spot in 1994 Cathcart and later that season pulled up in the Irish Grand National. Moved from John Mulhern to Gordon Richards in February 1995 and finished fifth in the Topham Chase. Won a Newbury chase the following autumn but was lightly raced thereafter. Ran a blinder in the 1997 National coming from well off the pace to eventually finish fourth. Pulled up in the Scottish National on his next start. He was last seen out at Ayr in April 1999.
EVANGELICA (USA) (1996) b m Dahar (USA) - Rebut (USA) (Graustark (USA)) - Won a hurdle and 8 chases between 1994 & 1998. Mostly plied her trade in low key events in the south east but she did win a chase at the Open Meeting at Cheltenham in 1996. Finished a long way last in the 1997 National. Won a small race at Newton Abbot later that year and last raced at Southwell in August 1998.
FEATHERED GALE (1987) br g Strong Gale (IRE) - Darm Approach (Tug of War) - Won a hurdle & 6 chases between 1992 & 1997. Very useful Irish Chaser who won 1994 Galway Plate when still relatively inexperienced and the Munster National in 1995. Beat Jodami by six lengths in 1996 Irish Grand National. Other impressive performances included runner up in Midlands National in 1995 and runner up in the Becher Chase. Looked like an ideal National candidate in 1997 especially as he had form over the course but he seemed to hate the experience and sulked throughout in rear until he pulled up four fences out. Followed that disappointment with a similarly lacklustre performance in the Whitbread Gold Cup. Later that summer he won at Cork but flopped in the Galway Plate and was retired after pulling up at Cork in October 1997.
FULL OF OATS (1992) b g Oats - Miss Melba (Palah) - Won 5 chases between 1992 & 2000. Unraced over hurdles. Loved Warwick and won three races there on the bounce in 1996 including the Tote Classic Chase and the Crudwell Cup. First fence faller in 1997 National and did not return to Aintree although he subsequently ran in many long distance chases. Finished fourth behind Bobbyjo in 1998 Irish National and seventh behind Glebe Lad a year later. Also finished third in Young Kenny's Scottish National of 1999. Last seen in a four mile chase at Kelso in November 2000.
GLEMOT (IRE) (1988) br g String Gale (IRE) - Lady Nethertown (Windjammer (USA)) - Won a hurdle and 14 chases between 1992 & 2001. Ran three times over the National fences. In the 1996 Becher Chase he was quite fancied in a small field on the back of chasing home the subsequent Hennessy winner Coome Hill in the Badger Beer Chase at Wincanton. He was still in with a chance at the last before fading to finish third. In the Monday National he was squeezed for room at the seventh and was one of two to unseat in spectacular fashion. Ran no sort of race on this third trip when unplaced in the Topham in 1998. Continued to pick up small races during his long career and he won on his final racecourse appearance at Uttoxeter in April 2001. He then resurfaced three years later showing little in points but to be fair by then he was sixteen !!!
GO BALLISTIC (1989) br g Celtic Cone - National Clover (National Trust) - Won NHF, 4 hurdles & 4 chases between 1994 & 2003. Whilst he didn't win very often this remarkable animal ran at the Cheltenham Festival no less than nine times and if it wasn't for the loss of the Festival due to the foot and mouth crisis in 2001 he would have run at the meeting in every one of his ten seasons in training, He never won but his record should be recorded :
1994 - Weatherbys Champion Bumper - 3rd
1995 - Sun Alliance Novices Hurdle - pulled up
1996 - Cathcart Chase Challenge Cup - 6th
1997 - Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup - 4th
1998 - Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup - 11th
1999 - Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup - 2nd
2000 - Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup - pulled up
2002 - Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup - pulled up
2003 - William Hill National Hunt Handicap Chase - pulled up
It should also be noted that in 2001 when there was no Festival he ran in the Gold Cup consolation race staged at Sandown just going down by a short head against Marlborough in a terrific finish up the Sandown hill. In 1997 he started favourite for the Grand National on the back of what was his most successful season which had seen him win twice at Ascot (three of his wins came there in 1996) but he didn't really enjoy the experience and a monumental blunder at second Valentines didn't help his cause. He ultimately pulled up two fences from home. He only returned to Aintree once more but it was the slightly calmer waters of the Martell Cup over the Mildmay Course in 1999. He also finished second in the 1999 King George and fourth in the Irish Hennessy Gold Cup in 1998. His last Festival appearance in 2003 was his last racecourse start. A wonderful servant for connections.
GRANGE BREAK (1986) b g Over the River (FR) - Arctic Brilliance (Arctic Slave) - Won NHF, 2 hurdles & 7 chases between 1990 & 1999. Tough as old boots this one. Won on racecourse debut at Catterick and also won his first chase at Perth in September 1992. Won three times during a fourteen race novice chase campaign in 1992-93 season and was unlucky when he slipped up on the flat in a chase on the Mildmay course. Wins were harder to come by the following season but he finished third in the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival (a race in which he competed in three times). He won a handicap chase over the Mildmay course at the 1994 National meeting and also won the Golden Miller Chase (which was then quite a valuable prize) at Cheltenham's spring meeting. He was continuously campaigned in the top handicaps and his best performances later in his career were beating Bradbury Star in 1996 Rehearsal Chase (when it was run at Chepstow) and a fourth in 1995 Hennessy. He hated his one experience of the National fences, always in rear he refused in the closing stages. He later won a point to point at Barbury Castle in January 1999 and last raced when unplaced in the Grand Military Gold Cup in March 1999. A grand servant to connections.
LORD GYLLENE (NZ) (1988) b g Ring the Bell (NZ) - Dentelle (NZ) (Crest of the Waves) - Won 2 chases in New Zealand and 4 chases in the UK between 1996 & 1998. The spectacular, runaway winner of the "Monday" National who put up probably the most dominant display seen at Aintree since Troytown made all the running to win in 1920. Sadly like Troytown he only got one chance to shine. He was only moderate on the flat in his native New Zealand but was purchased by Sir Stanley Clarke who had watched videos of his two chase wins. He made his UK debut in January 1996 at Newcastle and although he failed to win in four starts in his first UK season he showed promise chasing home the likes of Mr Mulligan in the Reynoldstown Novices Chase at Ascot and the The Grey Monk at Haydock. In 1996-97 he ran up three consecutive wins at Uttoxeter including the Singer & Friedlander Grand National Trial over four and a quarter miles and was then beaten by Seven Towers in the Midlands National. Carrying just 10-3 he looked to be very well handicapped for the National. Of course we all know that the 1997 National was run on a Monday evening following the mass evacuation of the racecourse due to an IRA coded bomb warning. That is what most people remember not the superb performance by the actual winner. There were moments when he was briefly headed by the Jenny Pitman trained Smiths Band but this was basically a pillar to post win with just one scare when a loose horse tried to carry him out at the water jump. He never put a foot wrong and after Smiths Band crashed out at the twentieth fence the result never looked in doubt. No-one could get near him and he went on to win by twenty five lengths, the largest winning margin since Red Rums second victory in 1974. It was an unbelievable performance, the best this anorak has has ever seen in a National and as I watched transfixed I was convinced we were watching the "second coming". Sadly that 1997 National was his only appearance at Aintree. The rest of his career is described above.
LO STREGONE (1986) b g - The Parson - Somers Castle (Will Somers) - Won 7 chases, 3 hurdles & 3 NH flat races between 1991 & 1998. Won two bumpers at Leopardstown in 1991-92 before moving to the UK where he won a hat-trick of novice hurdle events at Haydock in 1992-93. Was better over fences winning a valuable handicap at Newbury in 1995 and finished third in that years Scottish National. His victory over a good field in the 1996 Greenalls Grand National Trial propelled him to 8-1 joint favourite for that years National but a case of equine flu in the week of the race led to his late withdrawal. He was re-routed to the Scottish National and finished fourth. The following year he ran poorly behind Suny Bay in the Grand National Trial and finally took his place at Aintree. However he did not seem to enjoy the experience and was in rear throughout before being pulled up. Last seen under rules when behind in the 1998 Kim Muir at the Festival and showed little in point to points the following year.
MASTER OATS (1986) ch g Oats - Miss Poker Face (Raise You Ten) - Won 10 chases between 1991 & 1997. The 1995 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner made a very inauspicious start to his career pulling up in a point to point in April 1991 on his only start for Henrietta Knight. Moved from the pointing field to Kim Bailey he pulled up on his rules debut at Newbury and his four starts in novice company provided just one win at the modest surroundings of a maiden at Southwell. Put away for the year he was not seen out again until November 1993. Following three wins out of four starts he announced himself as a major National player when he beat Moorcroft Boy and a host of other seasoned campaigners by fifteen lengths in the Greenalls Gold Cup which was run that year at Kempton following the abandonment of Haydock. Fancied for the 1994 National despite it being only his ninth start over fences he was one of five fallers at the thirteenth fence. Showing he had no lasting ill-effects from the experience he trotted up on his next start later that month at the Perth Festival. His "annus mirabilis" came in 1994-95, four wins on the trot culminating in that Gold Cup victory. He disposed of some very good horses on the way, first he saw off past National winner Party Politics in the Rehearsal Chase at Chepstow, then a future National winner, Earth Summit was left toiling in his wake in the Welsh National (which was also a transferred race run that year at Newbury). Then came victory in the established Gold Cup trial the Pillar Property Chase at Cheltenham in January (beating that very game mare Dubacilla) and he started the Gold Cup as 100-30 favourite. He won by a very easy fifteen lengths. He was considered a very good Gold Cup winner and with his Timeform rating for the season of 185 he is the seventh highest rated Gold Cup winner since Arkle. It was somewhat surprising therefore that he never won another race and never got the opportunity to return to Cheltenham. Sent off the 5-1 favourite for the National he tired to finish only seventh, the placing which actually does him an injustice as he was prominent until he faded two out. There were some that felt he had not completely got over his Gold Cup exertions while others questioned his jockeys tactics of steering a very wide berth throughout. The rest of his career was something of an anti-climax. As with so many Gold Cup winners there followed a "difficult season", pulling up suddenly with a burst blood vessel in the Rehearsal Chase followed by two good performances in defeat behind future stars One Man in the King George and Imperial Call in the Irish Hennessy. Sadly a leg injury picked up in early March ended his season. He was not seen out again for a year. His debut in 1997 was the Punchestown Grand National trial but he disappointed and was pulled up. He did take his chances at Aintree after there was some debate about his participation and he ran another credible race. He was never going to catch the runaway winner Lord Gylene but he looked booked for a place until he again faded this time to finish fifth. It turned out to be his last race. There were plans to run him in hunter chases the following season but for whatever reason that did not happen.
MUGONI BEACH (1985) b g Equal Opportunity - Cuckoo Flower (Murrayfield) - Won NHF, hurdle & 4 chases between 1990-97. Bred by Crisps jockey and BBC pundit Richard Pitman. Gained three of his wins over fences in the spring of 1995 and ran probably his best race when beaten only half a length when finishing third in a blanket finish to the 1996 Topham. Form deserted him the following season and he was 100-1 for the National where he pulled up. Only raced one more time thereafter at Taunton later in the month.
NEW CO (IRE) (1988) ch g Deep Run - True Minstrel (Prince Hansel) (1997) - Won 6 chases & 6 hurdles between 1992 & 1998. Combined running over hurdles and fences and was particularly effective in 1995-96 when he won two chases and three hurdles in a row before finishing third in the Coral Cup. Later that year gained his biggest triumph over fences when he won the Paddy Power Chase from Wylde Hyde at Leopardstowns Christmas meeting. Ran in 1997 National and flopped, hampered early and always struggling in rear. Not surprisingly he didn't return. Last seen at Punchestown in April 1998.
NORTHERN HIDE (1986) b g Buckskin (FR) - Lovely Tyrone (Percolo (FR)) - Won 2 hurdles & 5 chases between 1991 & 2000. Fairly useful chaser for Arthur Moore in Ireland, the highlights being victory in a chase on Irish Grand National day in 1995 and a grade 3 chase at Leopardstown in January 1996. The National was his third start for his new UK connections and he was prominent until second Valentines eventually weakening to finish a distant twelfth. Off the course for two years he showed little in outings in 1999 & 2000.
NUAFFE (1985) b g Abednago - Miss Margello (Bargello) - Won 6 chases between 1992 & 1997. Won his sole point to point in 1993. Had a reputation for being a dodgy jumper and failed to survive with his jockey in both his Nationals but he was actually a pretty good chaser. Won Thyestes Chase at Gowran and Troytown Chase at Navan in 1994. Very nearly won the 1994 Irish Grand National having developed a clear lead by four out he was only collared close home by Son Of War. He also finished third behind Jodami in the Irish Gold Cup in 1995. In the UK he was beaten a short head by Dublin Flyer in 1994 Murphys Gold Cup and gained his biggest success when lifting the 1995 Grand National Trial at Haydock. Was not so good after his first National challenge but did enjoy one final day in the son when he won the 1997 Red Mills Chase at Gowran before his second National attempt. He was twelve by the time of his second National so did not have too many more miles on the clock. He only raced one more time, a month later, at the Punchestown festival
PINK GIN (1987) ch g Tickled Pink - Carrapateira (Gunner B) - Won 4 hurdles and 12 chases between 1990 & 2001. Mostly plied his trade in the north. Not many National runners could boast successes on the all-weather but he won two all-weather hurdle races at Southwell in 1992. Won his first two chases in November 1992 at Carlisle and Newcastle and in November 1995 chased home Gold Cup hero Jodami at Kelso. In the National itself he got round in rear and similarly plodded round in his own time in the only running of the Sefton Amateur Riders Chase at the 1997 Becher meeting. Hit a purple patch in 1999 winning four chases. Last seen at Haydock in April 2001.
RIVER MANDATE (1987) b g Mandalus (IRE) - Liffeys Choice (Little Buskins) - Won 7 chases between 1992 & 1998. Ran in the Arkle colours of Anne Duchess of Westminster. Useful chaser and was not out of the first four in his first seven starts between November 1993 & December 1994. Was then off the course for two years but won on his reappearance at Bangor and after some more promising efforts was fancied for the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival. He fell when hampered. Ran in the 1997 National but never got into the race and was pulled up on he approach to second Bechers. Won a chase at Wetherby in January 1998 and ran in a second National Hunt Handicap Chase but pulled up on what was his final start under rules. Resurfaced in points winning one in 2000 and one would have thought that would be it. Rather sadly he returned in 2003 aged sixteen and was pulled up in his one start that year. Wisely he was not asked out again.
SMITH`S BAND (IRE) (1988) b g Orchestra - Pollys Flake (Will Somers) - Won 6 chases between 1993 & 1997. Showed little over hurdles but won on his chase debut at Stratford and won two more novice events. He was outclassed when pulled up in the 1995 RSA Chase at the Festival (ran eleven times in that novice campaign). Showed he retained ability with three more wins over fences in 1995-96. He was then off the course for a year and he pulled up on his one National prep race. Disputed the lead with Lord Gyllene in the National and actually took the lead at halfway. He was still full of running in second place when he hit the top of the twentieth and turned a sickening somersault - he was dead by the time he hit the ground.
SPUFFINGTON (1988) b g Sula Bula - Pita (Raffingora) - Won hurdle and 3 chases between 1993 & 1999. Enjoyed a successful novice chase campaign in 1994-95 winning three times (twice at Chepstow). Didn't live up to that until promise and never won again. Unconsidered at 100-1 for the National and unseated at second Bechers. Pulled up in the Scottish National two years later. Thereafter ran on points and hunter chases (last start under rules was at Bangor in April 1999) without much success.
STRAIGHT TALK (1987) b g Ovac (ITY) - Golden Tipp (Golden Love) - Won 8 chases between 1991 & 1997. Showed nothing on the flat or over hurdles in Ireland and was still a maiden after eighteen outings, Revitalised in points in 1994 winning five (first three by thirty lengths each). Won a novice chase on his debut for Paul Nicholls at Worcester in October 1994 and won three more in the spring of 1995 and three the following October. Finished fourth in the 1996 Topham but unseated when still in contention in the Becher Chase late that year. Sadly on his next start, the 1997 National he fell at the fourteenth, broke a leg and had to be destroyed.
TURNING TRIX (1987) b g Buckskin (FR) - Merry Run (Deep Run - Won a NH flat race and 5 chases between 1992 & 1998. Ran in the colours made famous by dual Queen Mother winner Barnbrook Again. Clearly not as good but ran consistently in long distance chases throughout his career without really hitting the headlights. Never got into the 1997 National but completed in thirteenth place. Not seen under rules after pulling up at Uttoxeter in February 1998 but he reappeared in points two years later winning at Barbury Castle.
VALIANT WARRIOR (1988) br g Vallyar (IRE) - Jouvencelle (Rusticaro (FR)) - Won hurdle and 9 chases between 1992 & 2001. Won once on the flat when trained by Henry Candy. Didn't show much over hurdles, down the field in 1992 Triumph and did not win over timber until he beat One Man (wonder what happened to him ?) at Wetherby in October 92. Was a much better chaser and for a two year period from the autumn of 1993 he was only once out of he first two in thirteen races. Ran well until second Valentines in Lord Gyllenes National before fading to finish tenth. Later that year he ran another blinder over the National fences going down by four and half lengths in third place behind Samlee in the Becher Chase. Won his final race in 1998 (a third victory at Newcastle). Fell at the first fence in 1999 Foxhunters (the only time he fell in his career). Last raced at Perth in May 2000.
WYLDE HIDE (1987) b g Strong Gale (IRE) - Joint Master (Master Owen) - Won hurdle and 8 chases between 1993 & 1999. Very useful Irish chaser who was arguably better in his native Ireland winning a Paddy Power Chase in 1994 (finished second in the race in 1998) and two Thyestes Chases in 1995 & 1996. Whilst he established himself as one of the best staying handicap chasers in Ireland he was less successful on his three trips to the UK. He flopped when favourite for the 1995 Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival and his two Nationals ended with rider Charlie Swan on the floor. He was just getting competitive in 1996 when his race ended at the second Canal but he was amongst the backmarkers when he unseated at second Bechers a year later (his chances were not helped by a monumental blunder at the thirteenth where Swan performed miracles to stay in the saddle). He bypassed Aintree in 1998 and finished ninth in the Irish National instead. He last raced at Gowran Park in February 1999.
1998 - Earth Summit
The winner
Regular rider Tom Jenks was back in the saddle for Earth Summits next race when he became the first horse to win the Grand National and Becher Chase in the same calendar year putting up another foot perfect display. It was his final victory. For his next race Suny Bay gained revenge on him in the Tommy Whttle Chase at Haydock and he was pulled up when favourite for the Welsh National. At Aintree in April with Jenks jocked off and Llewellyn back in the saddle the horse did not have the best of luck. He could not act on the ground, dwelt at the start and was hampered at second Bechers. He never troubled the leaders but stayed past tired horses to finish a very credible eighth. He ran in a second Becher finishing fifth but was retired after another lacklustre display in the Welsh National. He was given to his devoted lass Marcella Bayliss. He died in March 2005 having been diagnosed with cancer.
Leading Fancies
The 1998 National field was to put it bluntly pretty poor. Of the thirty seven declared to race only eight were in the handicap proper in a field made up mostly of absolute no-hopers many of whom had no right to run in a National. Favourite EARTH SUMMIT was head and shoulders above the rest and it seemed an absolute no-brainer that he would coast home (I got it right for once). He acted on the ground, he jumped and he stayed. He had won a Scottish National as a novice and after a period on the sidelines had added a Welsh National this season. Next best in the market, HIM OF PRAISE had never finished outside the places in his eleven career starts. His preparation for the National had included four victories including the Mildmay/Cazalet Memorial Chase at Sandown before finishing second ahead of EARTH SUMMIT (who finished fifth) in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup at Haydock. SAMLEE had won the Becher Chase, finished second in a Scottish National and third in an Eider Chase. He had obvious claims for former champion, dual National winner, Richard Dunwoody. Previous winner ROUGH QUEST missed last years race through injury and a fall in the Cheltenham Gold Cup was not the best of preparations for a second National tilt. The popular grey, SUNY BAY had finished second behind Lord Gyllene last year and since then had won both the Edward Hanmer Memorial Chase and the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. He was one of the top chasers in the country despite finishing unplaced in the King George VI Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup. Top weight of twelve stone though would be a very big ask. The enigmatic CHALLENGER DU LUC who had thrown away almost certain victory in the King George VI Chase was an interesting newcomer for champion AP McCoy.
3.45 THE MARTELL GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE £160,065 to the winner, £67,868 to the second, £33,750 to the third, £15,495 to the fourth, £7,361 to the fifth & £4,380 to the sixth

The Class of 98
BANJO (FR) (1990) b g Beyssac (FR) - Fabinou (FR) (Cavan) - Won hurdle and 7 chases between 1993 & 1999. Won four times at Auteuil after showing little over hurdles. Sold to Martin Pipe and was a very useful novice chaser in 1994-95 wining on debut at Haydock and then the Scilly Isles Novice Chase at Sandown. Finished third in the RSA at the Festival and ended his novice campaign with an easy win in the Mildmay Chase at Aintree. He was then struck down by colic and was off the course or two years. When he reappeared now in the care of David Nicholson it was surprising that the Gold Cup was chosen as his comeback race and clearly this was too stiff a task as he was pulled up when tailed off. He won on his debut the following season at Cheltenham and there were high hopes that he had returned to something like his best. However it was a false dawn and he showed little thereafter, a distant sixth in the Welsh National was followed by a first fence fall in the National. Last seen over the cross country course at Cheltenham in January 1999. He was then transferred to Paul Nicholls but he never ran for him. Carried the most distinctive black and white blinkers mirroring his owners colours.
CELTIC ABBEY (1988) b g Celtic Cone - Cogaleena (Coglrama) - Won 6 chases between 1994 & 2001. Came from the pointing field winning twice in 1994 and was also victorious that year in two hunter chases at Uttoxeter and Stratford. Unfancied and fell in the 1995 Cheltenham Foxhunters but ended the season runner up in the valuable Horse & Hound Cup at Stratford in June. Won another point in 1996 and ran much better in the Foxhunters finishing third. Ended the season on a high with victory over Double Silk at Cheltenham and he went one better at Stratford, Lightly raced the following year he gave Richard Johnson his first ride in the National and they were with the leaders when he unseated at he Chair. Riderless he nearly carried out the eventual winner Lord Gyllene at the water. He was an early faller in the 1998 race. He won hunter chases in 1999 & 2000 and was last seen out at Hereford in May 2001.
CHALLENGER DU LUC (FR) (1990) b g Chamberlin (FR) - Islande II (FR) (Tiepoletto) - Won 2 hurdles and 5 chases between 1994 & 2000. Potentially a top class chaser with victories in the Cathcart Cup at the 1996 Festival in his novice year and the Murphys Gold Cup on his first start in his second season. Ran in two Gold Cups and three King Georges and a number of other top events. Usually finished second and earned the dreaded Timeform "squiggle" in 1997-98 for his reputation as a horse who was not up to a fight and who settled for second place when challenged. His failure to See More Business in 1997 King George VI Chase being a case in point. Cruising at the last he overtook See More Business on the short Kempton run-in and capitulated as soon as he was headed close home. He just wasn't a battler finishing second five times that season. It was thought that the challenge of Aintree might focus his mind but he was among five first fence fallers. He lost his way thereafter and it was rather sad to see him trailing in the Coral Cup in the 1999 Festival. Last seen in minor company in Stratford in June 2000 - oh how the mighty had fallen.
CIEL DE BRION (FR) (1990) b gg Shafoun (FR) - Jupe de Laine (FR) (Vieux Chateau) - Won hurdle ad 4 chases. Won four times at Auteuil but was only an average chaser and certainly not as good as the other French raiders sent out by his astute trainer Francois Doumen to run in the UK in the eighties and nineties. Made his UK debut in a hurdle at Fontwell in February 1996 which he won and later that year he finished fourth in the Kim Muir at the Festival. In 1997 he returned to the UK and finished a very creditable fourth in the Hennessy and filled the same position in a chase at Kemptons Christmas meeting. Ran well in the National but was held when taking a tired looking fall five out. He pulled up in the valuable Prix la Haye Jouselin at Auteuil in November 1998 and was not seen out again
COURT MELODY (IRE) (1988) b g Whistling Deer - Overwood Grove (Welsh Saint) (1998) - Won 2 NHF, 4 hurdles & 9 chases between 1992 & 1999. Moody individual who's career was a mixture of success and failure. Was just as likely to win as he was to pull up/refuse. Useful hurdler for Michael Hourigan in Ireland but when he came to the UK he failed to finish in five of his first six starts before he was finally successful at Worcester and Newton Abbot in November/December 1995. Won several times at Sandown and finished fifth in 1997 Scottish National and second in that years Becher Chase having had every chance at he last. Fell at Bechers first time in the 1998 National and did not return to Aintree. Finished unplaced in 1998 Whitbread. Didn't appear to enjoy the Cheltenham cross country course on his one visit in 1999 where he refused when behind but then enjoyed later success when he lifted the Grand Military Gold Cup on his next start and only just failed to win both military chases at Sandown when he was second in the Royal Artillery Gold Cup. Last raced at Chepstow in May 1999.
FABRICATOR (1986) b g Lafontaine - Brompton Roase (Sun Prince) - Won NHF, hurdle and 4 chases between 1990 & 1998. Did most of his racing in Ireland where he was nothing more than an average chaser. Made his debut for new UK connections at 1998 Festival where he was tailed off in the Grand Annual. Completely unfancied in the National he was slowly away and fell at the third. He was already twelve and on his next start at Market Rasen he made mistakes and fell when tailed off. Probably wisely he was not seen out again
GENERAL CRACK (IRE) (1989) ch g Lancastrian - Barna Havna (Crash Course) - Won NHF, hurdle & 6 chases between 1994 & 2001. Won his sole Irish bumper before moving to Paul Nicholls. Fell in National Hunt Chase at 1996 Festival and then won five on the bounce culminating with victory in the Charisma Gold Cup at Kempton in October. Fancied for the Hennessy Gold Cup he ran lifelessly, pulled up and was found to have an irregular blood count which kept him off the course for a year. On his return he was not given a hard race and then pulled up at Wincanton. Next raced in the National and appeared unsuited by the conditions and pulled up relatively early on the first circuit. Very lightly raced thereafter and missed 1999 & 2000. Was sent to Pardubice in the Czech Republic to contest a cross country event in October 1998 but failed to finish. Last seen at Uttoxeter in April 2001.
GIMME FIVE (1987) b g Deep Run - Cill Dara (Lord Gayle (USA)) - Won 2NHF, 3 hurdles and 2 chases between 1991 & 1998. Finished down the field in 1994 Gold Card Hurdle Final at the Festival. Put up his best performance when beaten a neck by Life of a Lord in 1995 Kerry National and on his next start won the valuable Troytown Chase at Navan. Off the course for two years afterwards and not so good on his return. He was tailed off and pulled up at half way in 1998 National Hunt Handicap Chase. In the National he survived in the very heavy conditions and came home a very distant fifth of the six finishers. Raced just two more times and was last seen out in the 1998 Troytown Chase
GO UNIVERSAL (1988) br g Teofane - Lady Dorcet (Condorcet (FR)) - Won 6 chases between 1993 & 2000. Showed nothing over hurdles but won on his chase debut at Chepstow in October 1994. Struck up a sequence of five straight wins between August & December 1995 including a race over the Mildmay course at the Becher meeting, Put up by far his best performance in 1996 Topham where he made nearly all the running and was just touched off in the closing stages by Joe White. Very lightly raced thereafter and moved stables from Charlie Brooks to Noel Chance for whom the 1998 National was his first start for new connections, an incredible four hundred and thirty four days since his previous run. He ran well for a circuit but hit the Chair and weakened so rapidly that he was not to asked to go out on the second circuit. Later ran in points and was last seen under rules in a hunter chase at Newbury in March 2000.
GREENHILL TARE AWAY (1988) b g Oats - Burlington Belle (Galivanter) - Won 4 hurdles and 5 chases between 1993 & 2000. Won five of his first eight chases in 1994 & 1995 before refusing when breaking a blood vessel in the RSA Chase at the Festival. Ran a superb race in the old Mildmay/Cazalet Memorial Chase at Sandown in January 1996 engaging in a titanic struggle up the Sandown hill against Sibton Abbey before both were caught close to the line by the fast finishing Superior Finish (this was jockey Peter Hobbs last ride). Off the course for nearly two years he showed little before his attempt in the 1998 National. He may have been unfancied but he ran an absolute blinder. He led for most of the race and was still in contention (although weakening) when he hit the top of the fourth last and unseated rider Simon McNeill who wisely did not remount (they still would have been in a with a chance of some place money). Didn't run much under rules after that and went pointing .
GRIFFINS BAR (1988) b g Idiots Delight - Milly Kelly (Murrayfield) (1998) - Won one chase between 1992 & 1998. Gained the sole success of his career in a small race at Market Rasen in November 1996. Started 200-1 with form figures of PPP0U-0F in the 1998 National but that does not tell the whole story as he had taken well to the Aintree fences in two of his three previous attempts over the course. In the 1997 Topham he was in contention in third place when he unseated his rider after the Canal Turn and he ran the race of his life at odds of 100-1 in the 1997 Becher Chase. Having been prominent throughout he was only beaten a total of nine lengths in fifth place by Samlee. Blotted his copy book though with a second fence fall in the Topham two days before he lined up in the 1998 National. Sadly he hit a piece of false ground after jumping the fifth fence safely and came down breaking his shoulder which necessitated his destruction. One of three fatalities in the race there was an understandable outpouring of angst after the race and a subsequent enquiry ruled that no horse could run in the National if it had run after the forty eight hour declarations. It is now not possible for a horse to try and win both the Topham and the National in the same year.
HILLWALK (1986) b g Croghan Hill-Bells Walk Fancy (Entranal) - Won 3 NHF, hurdle and 8 chases between 1990 & 2000. Won an Irish Point in 1990 and three of his first four flat races before he beat twenty six rivals in a maiden hurdle at Punchestown in October 1992. Moved to the UK where he was a stalwart in long distance chases, the highlights being three wins in the summer of 1996 and lifting the amateur riders chase at the 1997 Open meeting at Cheltenham. Finished seventh in the 1995 Scottish National. Didn't act on the very heavy conditions he encountered at Aintree in 1998 and was one of several who were pulled up at half way. Last seen out in a point to point at Marks Tey in April 2000
HIM OF PRAISE (IRE) (1990) b g Paen-Tamed (Rusticaro (FR) - Won a hurdle and 6 chases between 1996 & 2003. Having been successful in his sole Irish point in April 1995 he was also successful on what proved to be his sole start over hurdles at Sandown later that year. Very useful long distance chaser running up a sequence of five straight wins in 1997-98 culminating with victory in the now defunct Anthony Mildmay/Peter Cazalet Memorial Chase at Sandown which, following a second in the Greenalls Grand National Trial made him one of the favourites for the 1998 National where he started at 8-1. He was struggling and weakening when he refused four from home pitching Charlie Swan (in what was his last National ride) over the fence. The following season he ran in various long distance chases including the Hennessy, Welsh and Midlands National but when he did return to Aintree it was in the 1999 Becher Chase where he chased home the impressive Young Kenny. Lightly raced thereafter he finished second in his sole point and last raced at Fontwell in February 2003.
INTO THE RED (1984) ch g Over The River (FR) - Legal Fortune (Cash and Courage) - Won hurdle and 6 chases between 1988 & 1998. Inauspicious start to his career over fences, running out at Stratford on his debut then falling at Plumpton before making it third time lucky when he won at Stratford. Developed into a very useful long distance chaser winning 1993 Eider and finishing second in the Midlands National. Ran well for a very long time on his Aintree debut in 1994 National and got a lot further than may that day until unseating at the very last fence when held in fifth place. The following autumn he won the Becher Chase by fifteen lengths over Feathered Gale and finished fifth in the 1995 National (and down the field a year later). In between he became the first dual winner of the Becher Chase in 1996 when he beat the evergreen Young Hustler. In 1995 he also became a rare British visitor to France when he contested the Grand Steeplechase De Paris falling five out when out of contention. He retired after pulling up at half way in the 1998 National. A true Aintree specialist he jumped a total of 149 National fences successfully.
JOE WHITE (1986) ch g Tampero (FR) - Fiery rose (Boreen FR)) - Won a hurdle and 5 chases between 1990 & 1998. Fairly mediocre chaser in Ireland when trained by Tommy Carberry (finished unplaced in an Irish National and Galway Plate). Won three times for new connections in 1995-96 culminating with a last gasp victory by a head over Go Universal in the Topham. Fell in the Becher Chase later that year and pulled up lame at Musselburgh at the end of 1996. He did not see a racecourse again until the 1998 National where he pulled up before the Chair. That was his last start over rules although he did run a year later in a point to point at Penshurst.
KILLESHIN (1986) bl g Al Sirat - Spin Off (Wrekin Ridge) - Won 5 chases between 1990 & 2000. Quirky individual who loved soft ground and who also liked to come from way off the pace. Possibly the only horse listed here for whom the four and half miles of the National course was a little on the short side. Absolutely useless in the early part of his career when trained by Karl Burke only once reaching the frame in thirteen starts. Proved a much better hunter chaser for John Manners in 1994 winning a maiden at Leicester, a hunter chase at Fontwell and then the Aintree Foxhunters coming from behind to steal victory in the closing stages. The following year he was tried in handicaps and lost his form so badly that his rating dropped meaning that he was ineligible for the 1996 National. Ironically during that season he won a long distance chase at Taunton and the valuable Eider Chase at Newcastle so he would have been a good addition in what actually turned out to be a substandard National with a dearth of runners. He started favourite for that seasons Midlands Grand National but he fell two out. He did get into the 1997 National and was predictably outpaced although he did pass tired horses to eventually finish a very respectable seventh. During 1997 he also finished unplaced in the Scottish National and was fourth behind Earth Summit in the Welsh equivalent The 1998 National was billed as his final race and again he allowed himself to be at the back for most of the race until he was hampered and brought down four fences from home. He was remounted and finished in his own time. Surprisingly he popped up again in 2000 where he was pulled up in two point to points.
MAPLE DANCER (1986) b g Viking (USA) - New York Rose (pieces of Eight) - Won 4 hurdles & 7 chases between 1990 & 1999. Did all his winning in snatches. Won two hurdles in ten days in June 1991 when trained in Ireland. Won twice in January 1992 and three times on the bounce in July-August 1996. Then was off the course for a year and when he returned his form deserted him and he lined up at Aintree with form figures 0PPP. Lost his place after twelve fences and when he literally climbed through the thirteenth he came to a stop. Last raced at Newton Abbot in June 1999.
PASHTO (1987) b g Persian Bold - Epure (Bellypha) - Won 2 hurdles and 3 chases between 1991 & 1998. Three times winner on flat when trained by Barry Hills including over two miles at Newmarket (finished down the field in 1990 Cesarawich). Won on hurdles debut at Newbury and on his next start finished twelfth in the 1991 Triumph. Highly tried over hurdles the following season which yielded one win in a big field at Hereford. Won first two novice chases during 1994-95 season at Huntingdon and Cheltenham but pulled up when favourite for the Feltham Novices Chase at Kempton. Didn't really live up to that initial promise but did win a third chase at Wincanton in March 1996 and finished third over the Mildmay course at that years National meeting. Lightly raced thereafter and was unconsidered for the 1998 National (his fourth run at the meeting). He was a first fence faller and whilst he was quick on his feet within minutes he had collapsed and died.
POND HOUSE (IRE) (1989) b g Phardante (FR) - Arctic Tack (Arctic Slave) (1998) - Won 7 chases between 1994 & 1998. Ran his best races on firm/good to firm and had only once run further than two and a half miles. His previous visit to Aintree in the 1997 Topham ended at the first fence. He also had not run since winning a small race at Cartmel the previous August so he did not seem an obvious National type. However he usually jumped soundly and was still going well when he lost his action after the fourteenth and was pulled up. He was found to be lame and after a spell at the Liverpool Veterinary centre he was retired.
RADICAL CHOICE (IRE) (1989) b g Radical - Shule Doe (Royal Buck) - Won a hurdle and chase between 1994 & 1999. Very lightly raced and only ran seventeen times in total. Won his sole hurdle beating twenty horses at Catterick in January 1996 and won his sole chase on his debut at Newcastle in December 1997 (after nearly two years off the course). Ran in the National on only his fifth start over fences and was pulled up at halfway. Last seen pulling up at Hexham in April 1999
ROUGH QUEST (1986) b g Crash Course - Our Quest (Private Walk) - Won a hurdle race and 7 chases between 1991 & 1999. The 1996 hero who survived the scare of an objection and stewards enquiry after he undoubtably hampered runner up Encore Un Peu at the Elbow. Fell on his debut over hurdles on what was his only appearance in 1990-91 but developed into a useful novice chaser winning his first two starts over fences and finishing fourth in a strong renewal of the RSA Chase behind future National winner Miinnehoma. Leg injury confined him to just one start the following season and he fell in both the Racing Post Chase and on his Aintree debut in the Topham in 1994 (although he was in contention when he came down). He had a new trainer for the following year which netted his most valuable win so far, a nine length triumph in the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival. He also won a handicap at the Punchestown Festival at the end of the season. Whilst his jumping still could let him down he was now in the form of his life and prior to his National he had finished runner up in the Hennessy and won the Racing Post Chase at Kempton. Then came a superb second place behind the very impressive Imperial Call in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. It was a no brainer at Aintree really and as favourite his odds of 7-1 seemed incredibly generous. It was not a classic National by any means with an unusually small field of twenty seven but he jumped well, moved into a prominent position and swept passed Encore Un Peu at he Elbow. There is no doubt in my mind that, as he hung left, he hampered the runner up and I am sure had it been a normal race he would have been demoted in the stewards room. But no horse had ever been disqualified in the National and no one wants to win the race by default. The following season was a bit of a non-event. Niggling injuries meant that he missed his intended warm up races for his first target the King George VI Chase and he lined up in of all things a novice hurdle at Folkestone (which he won easily). In the King George he finished a very distant second behind One Man (the position flatters him, he was some way behind second placed Mr Mulligan who fell at the last). Tendon injury curtailed that season. He was off the course for another year but in 1997-98 he still managed to finish third in the King George but his jumping let him down again when he fell when behind in the Gold Cup. He took his chances at Aintree but was struggling in the mud and was pulled up when well beaten two out. He did win a hunter chase at Haydock the following March but he took a very heavy fall at the big open ditch in the 1999 Foxhunters and connections called time on his career. It is noticeable that his National victory was the only time he completed the National course in four attempts. He enjoyed a long retirement before he died at the age of thirty in October 2016. At the time he was the oldest surviving National winner.
SCOTTON BANKS (IRE) (1989) b g Le Moss (IRE) - Boherdeel (Boreen) - Won 2 hurdles and 10 chases between 1993 & 1998. Won first three chases at Wetherby and Nottingham, pulled up in RSA, finished third to Banjo in Mildmay Chase and then won two more novice events at Stratford in the late spring. Very useful in 1995-96 winning the Peter Marsh Chase and his greatest moment came with a fifteen length victory over Barton Bank in the Martell Cup at the Grand National meeting. Pulled up in Whitbread Gold Cup on his next start. Started 1996-97 with a last of four behind One Man in the Charlie Hall Chase and then disappointed when fancied for the Becher Chase. Didn't seem to adapt well to the fences and finished tailed off last of four finishers. Lost his way thereafter and was a surprise entry for the 1998 National but he equipped himself far better this time and was still in touch when he unseated at the fence after Valentines on the second circuit. Pulled up in a second Whitbread on his next start which was his final appearance under rules. Won a point to point the following year.
WHAT A HAND (1988) ch g Nearly A Hand - Kid Star (Some Hand) - Won 4 chases between 1996 & 1999. Very useful between the flags between 1994 & 1997 wining seven times and remaining unbeaten whenever he completed the course. Beat Brown Windsor in a Windsor hunter chase on his debut under rules. Moved to Ireland briefly in 1997 and won two more hunter chases. Was sent to Paul Nicholls for the 1997-98 season but was unable to add to his winning tally. Hampered and fell at the first fence in the National and finished unplaced in the La Touche Cup at Punchestown on his next start. Ended his career as he started winning point to points in 2000.
WINTER BELLE (USA) (1988) b g Sportin Life (US) - Belle O'Reason (US) (Hail to Reason (US)) - Won 2 chases, 2 hurdles & 2 NH flat races between 1992 & 1998. Originally trained in Ireland where he was very successful, won his first two NH flat races before finishing third in the 1992 Festival Bumper. The following year on the back of two novice hurdle wins he returned to the Festival as a fancied runner for the Ballymore Hurdle and finished eighth. After that he won on the flat at Clonmel. In 1994-95 he was a fairly useful novice chaser but didn't win but remarkably during the summer picked up four races on the level. Moved to Howard Johnsons yard in 1997-98 he finally managed to win over fences winning twice at Catterick before finishing sixth in the Kim Muir on his third visit to the Festival. He was outclassed and pulled up in the National and also pulled up in the Whitbread on what was his final start over rules. Thereafter he ran in point-to-points winning once at Barbury Castle in 1999.
YEOMAN WARRIOR (1987) ch g Tug of War - Annies Pet (Normandy) - Won 2 chases between 1992 & 1998. Showed nothing over hurdles but won his second chase at Folkestone in December 1994. Had to wait over three years for win number two (courtesy of a thirty length win in a conditionals event at Cheltenham) but put up his best performance when going down only three lengths to Bells Life in the 1997 Topham. Pulled up in the National on what was his final start as he suffered a tendon injury and was retired.
1999 - Bobbyjo
The winner
Like a number of recent winners the Whitbread Gold Cup was next on Bobbyjos agend and he ran reasonably well to finish sixth in a big field. As a better than average National winner there were high hopes for a repeat in 2000 with runs in hurdles to keep his handicap mark as low as possible. Carrying one stone and six pounds more in 2000 he made a terrible blunder at the seventh fence and after being the "meat in the sandwich" between two fallers at second Bechers he did well enough to finish seventh. He showed little thereafter and sadly broke a bone in his knee when finishing unplaced in a chase at Fairyhouse in February 2001. He was put down after suffering from complications the following month. He was honoured with a steeplechase at the course where he met his end and it is now one of Irelands most important National trials. He is also honoured with a magnificent statue in the small town of Mountbellew in County Galway.
Leading Fancies
For this year there were some changes to the conditions of the race. Whilst they would not be needed this year a reserve system was introduced. The practice of running a horse in the Grand National and any other race during the three-day meeting was also banned. This brought to an end the practice of horses running over the National course on the Thursday or Friday before running in the National on Saturday so there could be no more attempts at that historic Topham/ National double (which to be fair few attempted).
In the run-up to the National all talk was about the Paul Nicholls trained, former hunter chaser DOUBLE THRILLER. He rose from obscurity to potentially the hottest favourite in National history in a mere four months. A useful pointer he won four times between the flags in 1997 and 1998 but it was his twelve length demolition of a then little known grey called Teeton Mill at Cheltenhams hunter chase evening meeting in April 1998 that propelled him into the limelight. Not at the time though but Teeton Mill, another graduate from the hunting field went on to win the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, King George VI Chase and Ascot Chase in a three month period which propelled him to Gold Cup favouritism. When his Cheltenham conqueror lined up in the Jim Ford Cup at Wincanton (having effortlessly won a small race at the Somerset course in February) he was being touted as a possible Gold Cup contender. After a second facile win (at odds of 1-6) he was a 9-1 shot for the Gold Cup. He ran a blinder for one so inexperienced leading from the seventh fence until four out when he faded to finish thirty lengths behind stable companion See More Business in fourth place. He looked an ideal National horse and was the subject of a massive ante-post gamble. Up until the morning of the race there was talk of him being the shortest priced favourite in National history. In the end it didn't happen - he surprisingly drifted on the day to the point that he did not even start favourite. That honour went to the mare FIDDLING THE FACTS who was made the 6/1 favourite on the day of the race after a series of impressive, albeit not victorious, runs during the season. She had been third in Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, second in the Welsh National and then filled the runners up spot in National trials at Uttoxeter and Haydock. CALL IT A DAY had won the Whitbread Gold Cup the previous April and prepared for the National by finishing second in the Midlands Grand National. ADDINGTON BOY had been one place behind Double Thriller in the Gold Cup, having earlier finished third in the Irish Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown. He was a former winner of the Mildmay Chase over the Mildmay course in 1996. Best of the Irish was the Tommy Carbery trained BOBBYJO ridden by trainers son Paul. Ironically Tommy had ridden the last Irish trained winner of the National, L'Escargot twenty four years previously. He had won the Irish Grand National in 1998 and had run in a minor hurdles race as his prep race and remained freely available at odds as long as 40/1 until race day when his priced was slashed down to 10/1 at the off. A P McCoys ride, EUDIPE, a tough as old boots chaser rarely ran a bad race despite not often getting his head in front (he had won the Mildmay/Cazalet Memorial at Sandown), 1998 Scottish Grand National winner BARONET and last years winner EARTH SUMMIT who had won a second race over the National fences when he effortlessly took an admittedly substandard Becher Chase also came in for support.

The Class of 1999
AVRO ANSON (1986) b g Ardross - Tremellick (Mummys Pet) (1997 & 1999) - Won 5 hurdles & 2 chases between 1990 & 1999. Very useful hurdler winning his first five starts over timber in 1992 (also won twice on the flat that summer). In 1993-94 was one of the top staying hurdlers in the country being placed in both Long Walk and Long Distance Hurdles and finished first part the post in the Stayers Hurdle at the Festival. Unfortunately he hung left in the closing stages hampering the runner up Balasani and he lost the race in the stewards room. He didn't reproduce that form the following season so he went novice chasing winning on his debut at Newcastle beating future National winner Lord Gyllene. Finished second in the Mildmay Chase at Aintree in 1996. Lightly raced thereafter but he held each way appeal for the 1997 National despite it only being his eighth start over fences. He ran well until he lost his place after Valentines and eventually finished sixth. He then finished fifth in the Whitbread Gold Cup on his next start. He was not done with Aintree and was a last minute withdrawal in 1998 due to the ground and finished tailed off in 1999 in what was his penultimate start over fences. Interestingly he ran two more times that May the first on the flat at Beverley and after finishing tailed off in a chase at Wetherby he was retired.
BACK BAR (IRE) (1988) b g Strong Gale (IRE) - Ballingee Marge (Master Owen) - Won 4 chases between 1993 & 2001. Originally trained in Ireland where he won all his chases. He made his debut over the National fences when unplaced in 1996 Topham and fell at the seventh fence in the 1997 National. Bought by Fergus Wilson and sent to be trained by Ginger McCain the aim was to break the record for the amount of runs over the National fences. His first appearance for new connections was the 1998 Becher Chase where he finished a very distant last of three finishers. He didn't end up breaking the record but he did run over the fences two more times finishing unplaced in both 1999 National and 2000 Topham. Later raced in points without success. Last seen under rules in a hunter chase Bangor in May 2000.
BARONET (1990) gr g Roselier (FR) - Shull Agragh (Cassim) - Won 2 hurdles & 5 chases between 1996 & 2000. Won his first two chases at Kempton and over the Mildmay course at 1996 Becher meeting. Finished unplaced in the RSA and also the 1998 Kim Muir. Won 1998 Scottish National narrowly beating the ultra-consistent Eudipe and also won another long distance chase, the old four miler at Cheltenham on New Years Day in 1999. Looked an ideal National sort but fell early and ended his season puling up in the Whitbread. Lost his form thereafter and was not seen out after a very poor performance at Sandown in January 2000.
BLUE CHARM (IRE) (1990) Duky - Blue Rinse (Blue Rullah) - Won 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 1994 & 1999. Liked Musselburgh winning both his hurdles and two chases there. Also showed liking for the Mildmay course winning two small field affairs at the 1998 Grand National and Becher meetings. Was a revelation in the 1999 National leading from the fifth to seventeenth and twenty first to he second last eventually finishing a well beaten runner up to Bobbyjo. Looked to be an Aintree natural but sadly never got another chance as he died of peritonitis that June.
CASTLE COIN (1992) b g Carlingford Castle (IRE) - Rare Coin (Kemal (FR)) - Won a hurdle and 2 chases between 1996 & 1999. Won his last race in Ireland at Cork for Aiden O'Brien and his first race in the UK for Howard Johnson at Sedgefield. Finished third in the Mildmay Novices Chase in 1998. Unseated late on in the National having never got into the race and pulled up at Perth the following Month. Still only seven I can find no record of him running again.
CAVALERO (1989) b g Afzal(IRE) - Jolly Lass (Jolly Me) (1999) - Won hurdle & 7 chases between 1995 & 2001. Had a fairly disastrous start over fences in 1996, his first five appearances yielded form figures of PUFFP. However he started to show some promise between the flags in 1997 and in 1998 ran up a sequences of seven wins in points and hunter chases including victory in the Foxhunters at Aintree and ending the year beating Double Silk at Cheltenham .Not so good in handicaps the following season where he was without a win (he was brought down in the Becher Chase) and his saddle slipped causing him to be pulled up before the Chair in the National. Reverted to hunter chases in 1999-2000 and ended up as Timeforms top rated hunter with wins at Warwick and two at Cheltenham inducing the Foxhunters (joining that select band of horses who have won both the Aintree and Cheltenham Foxhunters). Only blot on an otherwise excellent campaign was unseating rider early in the Scottish National. He narrowly missed the cut for the 2000 National and was being trained for a further assault on the race in 2001 when he sadly suffered a fatal fall at Warwick.
COMMERCIAL ARTIST (1986) b g Furry Glen - Blue Sude Shoes (Bargello) - Won NHF, 3 hurdles and 8 chases between 1990 & 2000. Useful chaser when trained by Victor Bowen in Ireland. Won on debut over fences at Punchestown in December 1992 and ran in a number of top events. Won PZ Mower Chase at Thurles in February 1994 and ran twice in the 1994 Festival pulling up in the Kim Muir but filling the runners up spot two days later in the Cathcart. He also finished fifth in the Irish Grand National. In 1994-95 finished fourth in the Mackeson Gold Cup, third behind One Man in the Hennessy and won the Ericsson (now Lexus Chase) at Leopardstown's Christmas meeting (although to be fair the race did not then have the prestige that it now enjoys). Won a second PZ Mower and started at ridiculously long odds of 100-1 for the Gold Cup where he finished a very distant ninth behind Master Oats. That was his last race for Bowen and he was sent to be trained by Nick Gaselee for whom he won a three runner race at Windsor. By the 1999 National he was in the hands of Ginger McCain and having not shown much form for a couple of seasons started at 200-1 and was pulled up after one circuit. He did win another small race, at Cartmel the following month and later ran in hunter chases and points with little success. His last race was a refusal in a Cartmel hunter chase in May 2000
COOME HILL (1989) b g Riot Helmet - Ballybrack (Golden Cove) (1999) - Won 7 chases between 1995 & 1999. Trained by Cornish dairy farmer and permit holder Walter Dennis. He started life in the pointing field where he won three times in 1994 and three times in 1995. He won his debut hunter chase in 1996 and then stepped up in class the following season. He won his first three handicaps culminating in a four length victory over the useful The Grey Monk in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury. He surprisingly fell on his next start at Sandown but victory in the Jim Ford Cup at Wincanton put him into the Gold Cup reckoning - quite the fairytale for his small yard. He wasn't Gold Cup class and despite being prominent until the fifteenth fence he weakened to finish a distant seventh behind Mr Mulligan. The following season he disappointed in the Hennessy but was found to have "gurgled" which required a soft palate operation which kept him off the track for a year. When he returned in October 1998 he provided an emotional victory for his regular rider Jamie Osborne when he won an Ascot chase named in memory of his good friend John Durkan who had died of leukaemia the previous year. Sadly that was it really - he pulled up in the Hennessy and King George and finished a very distant last of nineteen finisher in the National. He died a month later on the operating table where he was having surgery for a wind problem (unrelated to his National exertions)
CYBORGO (FR) (1990) b g Cyborg (FR) - Quintessence III (FR) - Won 6 hurdles and 5 chases between 1994 & 1999. Very useful staying hurdler. Won 1994 Mersey Novices Hurdle at the Grand National meeting in desperately heavy going with a devastating turn of foot in the closing stages to get home close to the line. The following year he won four hurdles in a row and was a leading contender for the Stayers Hurdle but found Dorans Pride too good for him. He was then off the course for a year with a virus and on his reappearance in the 1996 Stayers Hurdle he prevailed to beat the popular Mysilv in a desperate battle up the Cheltenham hill. This was probably Martin Pipes training performance of the season. In 1996-97 he switched to fences and after winning his first three starts lined up in the 1997 Gold Cup. Quite an audacious move for one so inexperienced. Sadly this bold decision did not pay off and he toiled in rear behind Mr Mulligan. However he showed no ill effects for his run as, reverting to novice company, he won his second race at the Grand National meeting, this time the Mildmay Novices Chase. The following year he broke down in the Gold Cup on the first circuit and as he pulled up he controversially carried out the favourite See More Business and one other. That was it really. He did return to the racecourse in 1999 but his form figures that season read p4ppp. He did not seem a National sort and started at 100-1. Sporting the most distinctive blinkers perhaps ever seen at Aintree (they were bright yellow) he led for much of the first circuit but lost his place rapidly at half way and was pulled up before the nineteenth. He ran just once more under rules. He did reappear in a point to point at the old racecourse at Lanark in 2000 but in March 2001 came the sad news that he had been put down having suffered inflammation of the colon.
EARTH SUMMIT (1988) b g Celtic Cone - Win Green Hill (National Trust) - Won a hurdle & 9 chases between 1992 & 1999. The 1998 winner who is the only horse to have won an Aintree, Scottish and Welsh National. Despite winning three novice chases in a busy campaign in 1993-94 he was nothing more than an average novice as shown by his seventh place in the RSA Chase at odds of 66-1. But then came a remarkable performance at Ayr when, aged just six, he became the youngest winner of the Scottish Grand National. Sweeping into the lead in the home straight he won by a considerable margin. Victories at Cheltenham and Haydock followed in his second season over fences and a second place behind the seasons top chaser Master Oats in the Welsh National and he was made 10-1 co-favourite for the 1995 National. Then things started to go wrong. Tendon trouble curtailed his season and then after a couple of runs in the autumn of 1995 he broke down very badly when leading in the Greenalls Grand National Trial at Haydock. As a result of this new injury he was off the course for a further twenty one months. After two quiet races in good company he won his second National, the Welsh at odds of 25-1 beating the enigmatic, tiny, grey horse Don Samourai who on his next start turned the tables on him in the Greenalls Grand National Trial. Despite form figures of p/00100 he was sent off 7-1 favourite for the 1998 National on account of two things. Firstly it was a pretty terrible National in terms of quality with just six horses in the handicap proper and secondly he would act on the very soft conditions at Aintree that day. To be honest he was the most obvious candidate for National glory that day and even I backed him. He let others do the hard work on the first circuit, jumped well and took the lead five fences from home and he and the grey Suny Bay (to whom he was receiving twenty three pounds) made a fine sight as they drew clear of a handful of survivors over the Anchor Bridge Crossing. Suny Bay put up what is considered the greatest National weight carrying performance since Crisp and deserves enormous credit but he could not compete with Earth Summit who drew away to enjoy a very comfortable victory. Replacement jockey Carl Llewellyn enjoyed his second National win and ironically both had come from spare rides. Regular rider Tom Jenks who had partnered him in his last six starts was sidelined with a broken leg. Jenks was back in the saddle for his next race also at Aintree when he became the first horse to win the Grand National and Becher Chase in the same calendar year with another foot perfect display. It was his final victory. For his next race Suny Bay gained revenge on him in the Tommy Whttle Chase at Haydock and he was pulled up when favourite for the Welsh National. At Aintree in April with Jenks jocked off and Llewellyn back in the saddle the horse could not act on the ground, dwelt at the start and was hampered at second Bechers. He never troubled the leaders but stayed past tired horses to finish eighth. He ran in a second Becher that autumn finishing fifth but was retired after a a lacklustre display in the Welsh National. He was given to his devoted lass Marcella Bayliss. He died in March 2005 having been diagnosed with cancer.
EUDIPE (FR) (1992) b g Useful (FR) - Toskanimie (FR) ((Kashimi (FR)) - Won 2 hurdles & 5 chases between 1996 & 1999. Won over hurdles in the French provinces in the summer of 1996 and was then successful twice at Auteuil before he moved to Martin Pipe. Won on his UK debut at Stratford and was also victorious in the 1999 Mildmay/Cazalet Memorial at Sandown. Was ultra consistent and put up a number of top class performance in major handicaps without getting his head in front. Finished second in RSA Chase, third in 1997 Hennessy, second in 1998 Scottish National, third in 1998 Whitbread, second in 1998 Hennessy and fourth in 1998 Welsh National. Sadly he suffered fatal injuries when he was one of five to come down at second Bechers in the National.
FIDDLING THE FACTS (IRE) (1991) b m Orchestra - Facts'n'Fancies (Furry Glen) (1999) - Won 2 hurdles & 2 chases between 1996 & 2000. Won her sole Irish point and was sent to be trained by Nicky Henderson. Was a useful hurdler but better chaser winning on her debut in a Grade 2 event at Lingfield and followed that with victory in the Grade 1 Feltham Novices Chase at Kempton in 1997. Her novice season which had started so promisingly ended in disappointment. Her challenge for the RSA Chase ended with a blunder a the fifteenth fence and she was pulled up. She suffered a similar fate at Aintree and at Punchestown she was in with every chance when she fell two out in a valuable novice chase. She never won again but ran well in big handicaps the following season, third in the Hennessy, second in the Welsh National and third in the Greenalls Grand National Trial. She came in for considerable support on Grand National day and ended up the surprise 6-1 favourite deposing Double Thriller who at one stage had threatened to be the hottest favourite since Golden Miller. In the race itself she was travelling well when she fell at second Bechers. The following season she ran another good race in the Hennessy finishing third but then pulled up in the Welsh National. After two more lacklustre displays she was retired to the paddocks.
FRAZER ISLAND (IRE) (1989) b g Phardante (FR) - Avranshe (Random Shot) (1999) - Won 3 chases between 1995 & 2002. Won 3 point to points in Ireland between 1994 & 1996 before moving to the UK. Won twice during his novice campaign in 1996-97 and was a fairly smart chaser the following year finishing fourth in the Cathcart at the Festival and filled the same position in the Topham. Was rarely out of the first four when he completed but was an unconsidered 200-1 shot in 1999 and was in rear when he took a heavy fall at second Bechers. He later ran with success in points in the south-east (I think I may have called him home when he won at Godstone in March 2002). Last seen running poorly in handicap company at Plumpton in December 2002.
MUDAHIM (1986) b g Shareef Dancer (USA) - Mariska (FR) (Tanerko) (1999) - Won NHF, 5 hurdles and 7 chases between 1990 & 1999. Useful hurdler in his novice days without hitting the headlines but shaped into a decent novice chaser in 1993-94 winning four of his first five starts before falling when chasing One Man in the Reynoldstown Novices Chase at Ascot. Finished down the field in the RSA Chase and third in a novice event at the Punchestown Festival. After some disappointing efforts the following autumn he reverted to hurdles for the rest of the 1994-95 season and proved a revelation winning both the Premier Long Distance Hurdle at Haydock and the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham. He would have been one of the favourites for that years Stayers but an injury to his off fore kept him off the track until the following January and when he did get to line up in the 1996 Stayers he finished unplaced. He reverted back to chasing for 1996-97 and won an admittedly substandard Racing Post Chase but gained his greatest prize when getting up to win the Irish Grand National by a short head from Amble Speedy. Such is the angle of the finishing line at Fairyhouse that most commentators including those at Channel Four called Amble Speedy the winner. Another injury to that wretched off fore confined him to just one start in 1997-98 and he missed his intended target the National. When he did line up in 1999 he had not shown anything for two years so was allowed to start at 100-1 He was behind early and was last over Bechers when he unseated his rider. He did not race under rules again but did finish runner up in his sole point in 2000.
NAHTHEN LAD (IRE) (1989) b g Good Thyne (USA) - Current Call (Electrify) - Won 4 hurdles & 4 chases between 1994 & 2004. Useful novice hurdler in 1994-95 winning three times and an even better novice chaser the following season with three more victories. Having been beaten fifteen lengths by the then top novice chase Mr Mulligan in the Reynoldstown Novices Chase at Ascot he surprisingly turned the tables on him in the RSA Chase at the Festival. He never quite lived up to that promise thereafter although took his chances in the Gold Cup in 1997 (pulled up behind his old adversary Mr Mulligan) and was fancied for each of his three National attempts. Away from Aintree he finished fourth behind Baronet in 1998 Scottish National and pulled up in the Whitbread Gold Cup of 1999. Won a small race at Ascot in October 1999 (his first victory in over three years) but a month later his professional career was over. He was absent for two years and when he reappeared in 2002 it was in hunter chases and points . Won a point in March 2002 and a month later returned to Aintree where he fished unplaced in the Foxhunters. A year later he finished down the field in the Cheltenham equivalent at the Festival. Fell in a hunter chase at Warwick on his final start under rules in March 2004.
SAMLEE (IRE) (1989) b g Good Thyne (USA) - Annie Buskins (Little Buskins) - Won 8 chases between 1995 & 2000. Unplaced on sole point and didn't show much over hurdles. Won five of his first six chases in 1996 and in his second season he finished second to Belmont King in the 1997 Scottish National. Made a winning debut at Aintree in a competitive Becher Chase in 1997 and followed that with third places in both the Welsh National and the Eider Chase. In the National he was held up and whilst he finished third he was a very long way behind Earth Summit and Suny Bay - he never got near to them. Another trip to Ayr followed finishing sixth in the Scottish National and he filled that same position in the Whitbread Gold Cup a week later. The following season finished a very distant second behind Earth Summit in the Becher Chase but lost his way thereafter, pulling up in the Welsh National and he never got close in the 1999 National. In his final season he fell early in the Becher but did return to winning ways with a win in a small chase at Exeter in March 2000. He ran in a third Scottish National a month later but having led early he sadly collapsed and died in the closing stages when beaten.
ST MELLION FAIRWAY (IRE) (1989) b g Mandalus (IRE) - Kilbricken Bay (IRE) (Sallucova (IRE)) - Won 2 NHF, 2 hurdles and 3 chases between 1993 & 1999. Massive individual who was lightly campaigned rarely running more than four times a season. Successful novice campaigns netting two out of three wins over hurdles and three out of four over fences (including twice in soft/heavy at Lingfield). Ran in 1997 Irish Grand National and equipped himself well finishing fifth. Adapted well to the gruelling conditions at Aintree in 1998 and ran the race of his life to finish an albeit distant fourth of six finishers. Followed that heroic effort with a first fence fall in the Whitbread Gold Cup. Never in the hunt on ground that was not to his favour in 1999 and was not seen out again.
STRONG CHAIRMAN (IRE) (1991) br g Strong Gale (IRE) - The Furniture Maker (Mandalus (IRE)) - Won a chase between 1997 & 2002. Just the one victory does not really tell the whole story as in 1996 & 1997 he won six times in points. His sole success under rules was a three runner Newbury novice chase in November 1997. The 1999 National was only his eighth start under rules and he finished tailed off in fifteenth place having never got into the race. He ran in a few hunter chases thereafter before returning to the pointing field. Initially successful he won three points between 2000 & 2003 but had a disastrous final season in 2004 where his form figures read P0UUUF
TAMARINDO (FR) (1993) b g Galettoo (FR) - Rainbow Rainbow (IRE) (Vision (USA)) - Won 4 hurdles and 2 chases between 1997 & 1999. Won a hurdle at Auteuil before being sold to David Johnson. Had a stunning start to his UK career with three wins over hurdles (including one at Aintree) in May 1998. Then won his first two chases in the autumn, both at Cheltenham and looked to have a stunning future. Then it fell apart - pulled up in the Silver Cup at Ascot and in his next start and he was unfancied for the National Hunt Handicap at the Festival where he was again pulled up when tailed off. Lined up for the National and fell when in rear at first Bechers......and that was it. Still only six I can find no record of him running again under rules, abroad or in points. He has never been listed as a fatality so I assume he returned from Aintree safe and sound. His fate though remains the mystery of the decade.
