2000 - Papillon

Papillon.jpeg

The winner

The following December Papillon did what a lot of recent National winners found impossible to do - he won a race, and a valuable chase as well at Leopardstowns Christmas meeting. Unfortunately foot and mouth restrictions after his next start resulted in all racing in Ireland being suspended and there was talk of him not being allowed to leave Ireland to defend his Aintree crown. At the last minute travel restrictions were lifted and he duly took his place. However, on desperately heavy ground his chances seemed forlorn. He did well enough to get round having been baulked at the nineteenth and remounted. The following season he missed Aintree due to a strained knee but he was entered again in 2003 but after two lacklustre performances over fences and a disappointing display over hurdles at Punchestown in March 2003 his retirement was announced.

Leading Fancies

Aintree was not a great place to be in the days leading up to the 2000 National. The first day was marred by an unprecedented number of fatalities throughout the afternoon. Two of the four runners in the Martell Cup did not return to their stables whilst Rossell Island took a fatal fall at the first fence in the Foxhunters which led to a National fence being bypassed for the first time since the water jump was omitted in the 1955 National. When the Nicky Henderson up and coming star Architect took a fatal fall two out in the Anniversary Hurdle the atmosphere turned toxic and racing found itself making headline news for all the wrong reasons. Day two was only slightly better with a second fatality over the National fences when Toni's Tip broke a leg at the first fence in the Topham requiring the fence to be bypassed for a second race running. Alongside Toni's Tip was Even Flow who took a crashing fall and lay winded for several minutes - whilst he eventually got up a friend of mine who was there that day watched in horror and said later that he felt he was watching the "beginning of the end". Aintree found itself shrouded in mist on National day almost as if the heavens were waiting for something bad to happen. The non-racing press and the antis certainly had their pencils sharpened to write up the races obituary almost waiting for another fatality. For the first time since 1992 a maximum field of forty lined up for the National. Favourite was the Martin Pipe trained DARK STRANGER, owned by Liverpool businessman Terry Neill he was looking to provide connnections with some compensation for the loss of the potentially brilliant Gloria Victis who had met his end in the Cheltenham Gold Cup a few weeks earlier. Thrown in at the weights with only 10 stone 1 to carry and with wins at Leicester and a seven length victory in the Mildmay of Flete Chase at the Festival he also had AP in the saddle. Runaway winner last year BOBBYJO followed up his Aintree triumph with a credible sixth place in the Whitbread Gold Cup. Campaigned over hurdles this season he was fancied for a repeat win. National debutants STAR TRAVELLER a seven times chase winner who ran well in the National Hunt Handicap Chase on his last start and Haydock specialist THE LAST FLING came in for support. The latter had won Haydocks three premier chases, the Edward Hanmer, Peter Marsh and De Vere Gold Cup this season before flopping in the Gold Cup on his last start. Top weight and another debutant YOUNG KENNY won the Midlands & Scottish Nationals in 1999 when still technically a novice. Not quite so good this year and soundly beaten in the Welsh National he had won the National Trial at Uttoxeter on his last start. There was just a feeling though that his challenge was a year too late. EARTHMOVER had been a former top class hunter winning 1997 Foxhunters at the Cheltenham Festival. He has become a pretty useful handicap chaser finishing third in the Welsh National. He had won a couple of novice hurdles in the autumn but was some way behind Young Kenny at Uttoxeter last time out. The plunge horse however was the Irish trained PAPILLON. A last minute withdrawal the year before he had run in three Irish Nationals finshing fourth in 1997 and runner up to Bobbyjo in 1998. He was the subject of a massive late gamble despite not showing much over fences and he had been running over hurdles. He was backed down from 33-1 to 10-1 on the day. A final mention to a 100-1 shot, the first Grand National runner from Scandinavia, the Norwegian trained TRINITRO, the winner of their Grand National at Ovrevoll in September on his last start. He was a complete unknown quantity as he was without a previous run in the UK.

The Class of 2000

BOBBYJO (IRE) (1990) b g Bustineto - Markup (Apiani II)  - Won 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 1995 & 2001. When he romped home by ten lengths setting off exuberant scenes in the winners enclosure when he ended a twenty four year drought for the Irish. Ironically it was his trainer Tommy Carberry who had ridden the last Irish National winner L`Escargot in 1975 and it was Tommys son, the flamboyant Paul in the saddle in 1999. An average hurdler he was a far better chaser wining three times during his novice campaign in 1996-97 and the following year he won two chases at Fairyhouse including a half length victory over another future National winner Papillon in the Irish Grand National. The following season he showed little in five starts over fences before he slammed a large field in a two mile hurdle race at Down Royal in mid March. Fancied for the 1999 National he was subject of an almighty gamble. Available earlier in National week at 33-1 he shortened from 16-1 to 10-1 on the day and the rest as they say is history. Later in the month he tried his luck in the Whitbread Gold Cup when ridden by Adrian Maguire deputising for the injured Carberry he ran credibly enough to finish sixth. The following season he was given a low-key campaign running three times over hurdles in what was an ultimately fruitless attempt to beat the handicapper (he was allotted twenty pounds more than he had when victorious). He was still fancied to become the first since Red Rum to win back to back Nationals but it was not to be. An almighty blunder at he seventh almost sent Carberry in orbit and he was struggling when he was caught in between two fallers at second Bechers. In fairness Carberry should be congratulated for getting him home safe and sound. The following season he was to be aimed again for the National but he broke a bone behind the knee when finishing eighth in the Grand National Trial at Fairyhouse and his racing days were over. Sadly complications set in after an operation and a few days before the 2001 National he had to be put down. He was buried at a farm near in his owners home village at Mullaghmore in County Galway. He is the only recebt National winner not to take place in a Parade of Champions which were introduced in the late eighties. The race in which he was injured was renamed in his honour and remains a recognised National trial.

BUCK ROGERS (IRE) (1989) b g  Buckskin - Marianme (Deep Run) - Won a point-to-point and NH flat race and a grade 3 chase at Punchestown on his first three racecourse appearances in 1994 but then was absent for a year. Falling on his return he disappeared for a further three years having broken down badly on both his forelegs. Having only had seven starts in his life thus far he enjoyed a splendid campaign in 1999-2000 when he managed no less than ten races. Victorious in the valuable Punchestown Chase and Leopardstown Chase he also finished third in the Ericsson Chase at Leopardstowns Christmas meeting. Starting at 50-1 in the National nothing was going better than him on the run down to Bechers and he was still going well when he fell at the Canal Turn. Whilst he was entered in 2001 (and was on my shortlist when the weights were published) he didn`t make it to Aintree and his seasonal debut at Down Royal in November 2001 proved to be his final race.

CALL IT A DAY (IRE) (1990) b g  Callernish - Arctic Bavard (Le Bavard) - Won 2 hurdles and 5 chases between 1994 & 2002. Won 1998 Whitbread Gold Cup and was placed in a whole host of valuable long distance chases including finishing third in 1998 Irish Grand National and second in the 1999 Midlands National. As a result of his consistency he started joint 7-1 joint second favourite for the 1999 National and ran a blinder to finish third (unfortunately his rider was unseated moments after crossing the winning post as he tried to avoid a number of over-exuberant connections of the winner who had run onto the track). His form deserted him the following season and he was unconsidered at 50-1 when he lined up a year later but he put up another solid performance to finish sixth. Thereafter ran in hunter chases and point to points (was still racing at the age of fifteen) without success.

CAMELOT KNIGHT (1986) br g  Kings Ride - Jeanette Maris (Fighting Don) - Won 3 chases between 1991 & 2000. Won his third and final chase at Chepstow in 1993 and didn`t win again despite seven years of trying. However it is as an Aintree specialist that we remember this one. He jumped one hundred and forty five Aintree fences. A faller in 1995 his finest hour came when, as an unconsidered 100-1 shot he stayed on past tired horses to finish third to Lord Gyllene. He then went on to finish fourth in the next two Becher Chases (ran a blinder in 1997 and was leading at the last fence). He was getting very long in the tooth by the time he lined up in 1999 and 2000 and never troubled the leaders either time but he did get round in his own time in 2000 to finish fifteenth beaten ninety lengths. Retirement beckoned.

CELTIC GIANT (1990) ch g Celtic Cone - Hester Ann (Proverb) - Won a hurdle and 4 chases between 1995 & 2001. Started 8-1 co-favourite in the Irish Grand National on the back of a fourteen length victory in the Kim Muir Challenge Cup at the Festival. Showed nothing in the same Cheltenham event twelve months later and toiled in rear throughout the 2000 National. Later that year was sent over to the Czech Republic to contest the Velka Pardubicka but only got as far as the first "In and Out" fence. Showed no ill-effects from that experience and won at Doncaster two months later. Last seen out pulling up in the 2001 Scottish National. Suffered from a fibriliating heart.

CHOISTY (IRE) (1990) ch g  Callernish - Rosemount Rise (Ashmore) - Won 8 chases between 1995 & 2004. Only tells half the story as he failed to finish in eighteen of his forty four starts including his three Nationals. Bechers claimed him twice, first circuit in 1998, second circuit in 1999 and he only got as far as the fourth in 2000. Liked Warwick though winning three times including the Warwick National in 2000.

DRUID`S BROOK (1989) b g Meadowbrook - Struide (Guide) - Won 3 chases between 1997 & 2000. Just ran for three seasons under rules. Twice placed in Sandowns Grand Military Gold Cup and twice ran in the Irish Grand National (1998 & 1999). Spectacularly unseated at the twelfth at Aintree (sent rider Ruper Wakley flying into the air). Only raced once more under rules at Uttoxeter in May 2000  but later ran in points, winning twice.

ESCARTEFIGUE (FR) (1992) ch g Start Fast - Dona Clara (Crystal Palace) - Won 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 1995 & 2002. Was Timeform Champion Juvenile Hurdler for 1995-96 despite only winning one race (by twenty lengths at Folkestone on his UK debut). It was his second place to Champion Hurdler Alderbrooke in the Scottish Champion Hurdle that propelled him to the top of the ratings as he had been beaten at both Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals. Ran in the 1997 Irish Champion Hurdle but could only finish fifth and was switched to the Stayers Hurdle instead of a challenge in the Champion Hurdle. He later won a handicap hurdle at the 1997 National meeting. Was a better chaser finishing second in the RSA Chase to the great Florida Pearl and gained a second Aintree victory, this time the Martell Cup (not bad for a novice). Campaigned in the highest class during 1998-99 he finished second to Teeton Mill in the King George, second in the Irish Hennessy (behind Florida Pearl again) before disappointing in seventh place in the Gold Cup. The National was the aim thereafter but he failed to sparkle and was behind when unseating at the last. Pulled up in the Whitbread on his next start and later finished sixth in the Welsh National. Thereafter he dropped out of the limelight but later won a point to point in 2002. Last raced under rules at Taunton in April 2002 and did not show too much between the flags in 2003.

FLAKED OATS (1989) b g Oats - Polly Toodle (Kabole) - Won 6 chases between 1996 & 2001. Came from the pointing field where he won six of his eleven races between the flags between 1994 & 1996. Won three of his four novice chases in 1996-97. Long distance specialist finishing fourth in 1999 Midlands National, fourth in 1999 Welsh National, second in 2000 Midlands National and fifth in 2000 Welsh National. Fell in 2000 National when in rear but finished fifth in the Becher Chase later that year. His last race under rules at Exeter in October 2001 was also his only start over hurdles.

KENDAL CAVALIER (1990) gr g Roselier - Kenda (Bargello) - Win 5 chases between 1996 & 2002. Had a great year in 1998 winning the four mile Miles Gosling Chase at Cheltenhams new year meeting, the Golden Miller Chase at the April meeting and the Welsh National for rookie trainer Nigel Hawke (beating that years National favourite Fiddling the Facts by half a length). Completed the course in the 1999 and 2000 Nationals without ever troubling the leaders and was last seen out in the Eider Chase at Newcastle in February 2002.

KINGDOM OF SHADES (USA) (1990) ch g Risen Star - Dancers Countess(Northern Dancer) - Won 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 1994 & 2002. When this one lined up in 2000 I had no idea who he was despite him winning the four mile chase at Cheltenham`s New Year meeting. He got round  in rear in sixteenth place and then disappeared for two years. Pulled up in his only two races thereafter in 2002 and didn't show anything in two subsequent point to points.

MICKOS DREAM (IRE) (1992) ch g Buckskin - Courreges (Manado) - Won NH flat race, 2 hurdles and 11 chases between 1998 & 2001. Owned by a twenty strong syndicate of Irish prison guards and was strongly fancied for the 2000 Grand National on the back of victories in the Thyestes Chase and the Red Mills Chase at Gowran. Unfortunately what would have been an entertaining post race interview didn`t happen as he was one of five fallers at the very first fence. Thereafter he continued riderless and finished the course. Later that season he was leading in the valuable Heineken Gold Cup at the Punchestown Festival before falling three out. Thereafter he reinvented himself as a leading two mile chaser in Ireland winning three times during the 2000-01 season culminating with victory in the Grade 1 Irish Independent Chase at the Punchestown Festival (which was run this year at Fairyhouse and Leopardstown). More of the same looked to be on the cards the following season when he won the Grade 3 Fortria Chase at Navan but sadly he suffered career ending injuries at Clonmel in his next start.

SENOR EL BETRUTTI (IRE) (1989) gr g  Roselier - Rambling Gold (Little Buskins) - Won a hurdle and 8 chases between 1994 & 2001. Popular grey who finished sixth in the 1997 Topham on the back of three straight wins. In 1997-98 season completed the Paddy Power (then Murphys) and December (then Tripleprint) Gold Cup double at Cheltenham and on the back of that was considered good enough to compete in the King George and Cheltenham Gold Cup. Fared badly at Kempton and was pulled up but at odds of 33-1 he finished fourth in Cool Dawns Gold Cup beaten sixteen lengths. Finished ninth a year later. In the twilight of his career and unconsidered at 100-1 he lined up in the 2000 National and got no further than the first fence. Only raced a couple of times thereafter and was last seen in a hurdle at Exeter in May 2001.

SPARKY GAYLE (IRE) (1990) b g Strong Gale - Baybush (Boreen) - Won a NH flat race, 3 hurdles and 8 chases between 1994 & 2003. Went through his novice chase campaign in 1996-97 unbeaten with victories in the Cathcart Chase at the Festival and the Scottish Future Champion Chase at Ayr. Looked a very exciting prospect but didn`t really live up to his early promise as he only won two more times (a small race at Ayr and a hunter chase at Kelso in the twilight of his career). Did finish placed in the 1999 Murphys Gold Cup and failed to land a Festival double by just two lengths when second in the Mildmay of Flete in 1998. Also pulled up in 1998 Hennessy and finished down the field in the 1999 Galway Plate. Unseated early in the National. Last seen at Ayr in April 2003.

STAR TRAVELLER (1991) b g Norwick - Star of Parnassus (Star Appeal) - Won 7 chases between 1997 & 2000. Winning point-to-pointer, unraced over hurdles. Won his first five races over fences between 1997 & 1999. Finally met defeat at the hands of future Hennessy winner Ever Blessed in October 1999 but was soon back to winning ways with two more victories at Cheltenham. Ran his heart out in the 2000 National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival before going down to Marlborough and Beau. Disputed favourtism for the 2000 National in the weeks before the event and ran a blinder in the race itself. Led at the first Canal and was clear by the twelfth. Surviving a monumental blunder at the thirteenth he was still held the lead after Valentines but was starting to weaken when he was pulled up rapidly approaching the fourth from home. Suffering a tendon injury it was hoped that he would be fit to run after a year on the sidelines. Sadly it was not to be and he did not see a racecourse again.

STORMY PASSAGE (IRE) (1990) b g Strong Gale - Pervsia (Pirate King) - Ran in the colours made famous by West Tip in the eighties. Won 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 1996 & 2000. All his chase victories were in his novice campaign 1997-98 but he did finish second in a Murphys (now Paddy Power) Gold Cup and fourth in the Tripleprint (December ) Gold Cup at Cheltenham. Fell at second Bechers in 2000 and I can find no record of him running again.

SUNY BAY (IRE) (1989) gr g Roselier - Suny Salome (Sunyboy) - Won a hurdle and 10 chases between 1993 & 2001. First came to my attention when he started favourite for the 1996 Mildmay/Cazalet Memorial Chase at Sandown having won all of his competed starts over fences. It was a painful introduction as he slipped up on the flat and fractures his jaw ! Lightly raced the following season but came into the National reckoning with an easy victory in Haydocks Grand National Trial. In the Monday National he survived a monumental blunder at the third last and finished a very distant second, beaten twenty five lengths by runaway winner Lord Gyllene. The following season he won an ultra-competitive Edward Hanmer Memorial and had the honour of being the very last winner called home by Sir Peter O`Sullevan when he landed the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. Now widely considered to be one of the top chasers in the country he was upped in class and finished fourth in the King George and sixth in the Gold Cup behind surprise winner Cool Dawn. If that was considered a below par performance he bounced back at Aintree with a second consecutive runner up spot in desperately heavy conditions, this time to Earth Summit. Lumping top weight of twelve stone this is rightly considered as one of the greatest weight carrying performances in modern National history and bettered only by Crisps titanic efforts in defeat in 1973 and Red Rums second victory under twelve stone in 1974. The following autumn he was briefly the top chaser in training in the UK with two more wins at Haydock, a second Edward Hanmer beating future Gold Cup winner See More Business and the Tommy Whittle Chase at odds of 4-11 when he turned the tables on his Aintree conqueror Earth Summit.....then it all went wrong. Sent to Ireland to contest the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown he ran lifelessly and was tailed off when he fell three fences from home. The rest of his form figures read p0-p00-pp. He did run in two more Nationals but never looked like troubling the leaders. The spark had gone. He last raced at Warwick in January 2001.

THE GOPHER (1989) ch g (2000) General View - Egg Shells (Miami Springs) - Won a hurdle and 12 chases between 1994 & 2002. A tough cookie who did a lot of his racing during the summer months so didn`t really hit the headlines. The National was the first race of any note that he ran in although he did try his luck in the Galway Plate later that summer. He fell in both races. Last ran at Plumpton in October 2002.

TRINITRO (1991) ch g Northern State - Mrs Waddilove (Bustino) - Won 8 chases between 1995 & 2003. Norways last steeplechaser (steeplechasing disappeared from the Norwegian fixture list in 2003).  His was a very sporting challenge for the 2000 National. His previous race has been a victory in the 1999 Norwegian Grand National, a two mile five furlong event over a figure of eight course with six runners. He was used to crowds of about six hundred so the pre-race atmosphere at Aintree freaked him out a little. He sweated heavily in the preliminaries and he went off like a train, far too fast, over- jumped and fell at the first fence. He briefly led the field riderless after Valentines before running onto the Mildmay course. He later won a second Norwegian Grand National in 2001 and added the Swedish equivalent in 2002. Later that year he twice visited Cheltenham to run in cross country events finishing third on the first occasion and falling in the second. He last raced in the 2003 Swedish Grand National at Stromsholm.

YOUNG KENNY (1991) b g  Ardross - Deidres Dream (The Parson) - Won 4 hurdles and 7 chases between 1995 & 2001. Won his first chase at Kelso in December 1997 by a distance but then got injured and missed nearly a year. His annus mirabilis came in 1999 when, after picking up the minor Lincolnshire National at Market Rasen he ran away with both the Midlands and Scottish Nationals. He was not entered in the National as connections felt he was not ready (as he was still technically a novice) and they did not want to be tempted. He therefore waited a year by which time he was not quite so good. He flopped in the Hennessy and was soundly beaten in the Welsh National by Edmond although he was able to turn the tables on his Chepstow conqueror when picking up his sole win at Uttoxeter. Allotted top weight of twelve stone in the National he was a surprise faller at the tenth fence. He then finished third in the Scottish National but disappointed in the Whitbread. He was then bought by Trevor Hemmings in who`s colours he ran in the 2000 Becher Chase. It was not a classic line up for the race which was run in wet and murky conditions but he lit up Aintree that day with a bold front-running performance and whilst he tired somewhat on the run-in he would have had connections salivating at the prospect of a second attempt on the big prize. Sadly two races later he broke his off-hind fetlock on the flat in the Greenalls Grand National Trial a Haydock and he had to be put down. The racecard for the 2002 Becher meeting depicted him on the front cover sailing over Bechers...a fitting tribute...oh what might have been.

2001 - Red Marauder

The winner

Tendon problems and heat in his leg prevented Red Marauder from returning to Aintree in 2002 to defend his crown but he was kept in training with a possible attempt on the Hennessy mooted. In the end it was not until February 2003 that he next saw a racecourse when, in a hurdle race at Newcastle, he was given a tender ride by Guest to finish fourth. The 2003 National was the plan and he was still in the race until National week when those dreaded leg troubles returned and his retirement was announced.

Leading Fancies

The 2000-2001 season had been, to put it bluntly, a disaster. First an unusually wet autumn and winter had caused countless abandonments and worse was to come when on February 19th a vet in Essex noticed traces of foot and mouth disease in cattle causing the abandonment of many more meetings as racing was even suspended for a period. The most notable casualty was the Cheltenham Festival, initially postponed to April and then abandonned altogether when sheep were inadvertently left grazing near the racecourse. So it was to Aintree that the racing world pinned it's hopes for some compensation but what was supposed to be the one remaining flagship meeting was ruined by the continued deluge as the heavens opened for the entirety of the meeting. Mud spattered jockeys and horses finishing exhausted and strung out became the norm for the meeting and such was the state of the ground come Grand National day that there were many that were expecting the race to be abandonned. Yet the authorities at Aintree perservered - there was no question that racing would not take place, there was not even an inspection. So the forty horses lined up in what was unquestionably the worst conditions seen at Aintree since Grudon came home in a blizzard in 1901.

It was a good field though and a very open renewal. There were three co-favourites, EDMOND had won 1999 Welsh National but had sidestepped the National last year as his owner was not keen but flopped in his alternate target the Irish National. He had finished behind Moral Support at Chepstow in November and finished a distant third in the Welsh National.  He was a mudlark who would relish the conditions. MORAL SUPPORT was only having his tenth start over fences but was in excellent form winning four races in succession in the autumn culminating in the Rehearsal Chase. He had finished second in the Welsh National but disappointed at Haydock on his last start. INIS CARA was the race's "plunge horse". He had switched stables in the week of the race and had not yet seen his new home. Whilst he had won a Paddy Power Chase in the past he had not won this season but was still the subject of a large ante-post gamble. BEAU made a lot of appeal. This second season chaser had been the runaway winner of the Whitbread Gold Cup after victories in the Great Yorkshire and Reynoldstown Novices Chase in quite an ambitious first season over fences. He had not won since that magnificent Sandown victory but he had finished fourth in the King George VI Chase. He would like the ground and seemed an obvious choice. Last years winner PAPILLON had won a valuable chase at Leopardstown's Christmas meeting but he would struggle on the ground. BLOWING WIND was a former top class hurdler with victories in the Imperial Cup, County Hurdle and Scottish Champion Hurdle in 1998. Useful over fences winning five times so far including his last two starts and was fancied to give champion A P McCoy his first completion in the race. One that I was surprised to see back was 33-1 shot RED MARAUDER, a faller at Bechers first time last year and his jockey had said afterwards "I dont think we'll be coming back". What did connections know that we didn't ? Fragile individual MELY MOSS for the second year running came to Aintree without a prep race. It didn't seem to do him any harm last year when he finished second. Lightning couldn't strike twice - could it ? One I fancied was an outsider at 100-1 HANAKHAN who had long ago won a Sun Alliance Chase and been very lightly raced since and mention too to an unconsidered outsider at 150-1 making his Aintree debut. A former Irish trained runner now in the hands of Ginger McCain AMBERLEIGH HOUSE who had shown nothing since moving to the UK.

The Class of 2001

ADDINGTON BOY (IRE) (1988) b g  Callernish - Ballaroe Bar (Bargello)  - Won 3 hurdles and 7 chases between 1993 & 2001. Excelled in his novice campaign in 1995-96 winning the Great Yorkshire Chase (on what was only his sixth start over fences), the Mildmay Novices Chase and the Future Champion Chase at Ayr. In his first season out of novice company he won the Tripleprint Gold Cup at Cheltenham. That was surprisingly his last ever win but he was campaigned in the highest company thereafter running without success in two Gold Cups (1998 & 1999). At Aintree he put up two excellent performance in 1999 finishing fourth and fifth in 2000 before being hampered and unseating early in 2001. He also raced twice in Ireland putting up sound displays both times with a third behind Florida Pearl in 1999 Hennessy Gold Cup and a second in Punchestown`s Heineken Gold Cup a year later (after his second National). Pulled up in the 2001 Whitbread and was last seen at Worcester in June 2001. Interestingly in all three of his Nationals he was leased for the day and so ran in three different sets of colours

ART PRINCE (IRE) (1990) b g Aristocracy I - Come Now (Prince Hansel) - Somewhere in the Racing Forum pages is a post by someone who is clearly more of an anorak than myself as he rates and lists every runner in the National from about 1976. At the bottom of the list and unofficially the horse with the worst National record of the modern era sits this Martin Pipe trained horse. Two Nationals - two falls at the first fence. Away from Aintree he was not  a bad chaser winning 7 chases and 2 hurdles. Ended his career as he started it in Irish point-to-points.

DARK STRANGER (FR) (1991) b g Iveday - Abeille Royale (Turn to Mars) - Won a hurdle and 6 chases between 1995 & 2004. Useful novice chaser in 1998-99 winning four times. Started favourite for the 2000 National on the back of wins at Leicester and a seven length victory in the Mildmay of Flete Chase at the Festival. Partnered by Richard Johnson that day but A P McCoy had the ride at Aintree and there were high hopes that he would finally complete the course on his fifth ride. He didn`t - clouting the third fence and being sent into orbit. He was baulked in the melee of the Canal Turn a year later. Away from Aintree he put in two excellent performance in the Whitbread Gold Cup. A fourth place in 2000 was followed with the race of his life where he was just touched off by Bounce Back in a close finish at odds of 66-1 in 2002. Off the course for two years he raced one more time when finishing unplaced in the 2004 William Hill Trophy at the Festival.

EARTHMOVER (IRE) (1991) ch g Mister Lord - Clares Crystal (Terkonah) - Won 2 hurdles and 17 chases between 1995 & 2005. Won his first five point to points and two hunter chases in 1997 and won three more hunter chases the following year culminating with victory in the Christies Foxhunters Chase. That year he had a young Joe Tizzard in the saddle. He won the Foxhunters a second time with Rhilly Goschen on board an incredible six years later. In between he was a pretty useful handicap chaser finishing fifth in the 1999 Hennessy and third in the 1999 Welsh National but he was often let down by his jumping. He raced in two Nationals and came down at the fourth fence both times. He won some more points in the latter stages of his career and last raced at Cheltenham in April 2005. One of the best hunter chasers of the decade.

EDMOND (1992) b g Video Rock - Galia III (Baraban) - Won 3 hurdles and 6 chases between 1997 & 2002. When he lined up in the 2000 Irish Grand National he had never been out of the first three in all his completed starts including a ten length victory in the 1999 Welsh National. Would have been very fancied for the 2000 National but his owner wasn`t keen so he lined up at Fairyhouse instead where he flopped, pulling up having jumped badly. Noted as a proven mudlark and with the wettest winter on record his owner was persuaded to allow him to take his chance in 2001. One of those who would have relished the conditions he led for a circuit but appeared to be struggling when he took a heavy fall at the Chair. Didn`t race much the following season pulling up in both the Welsh and MIdlands National in what was his final race under rules. In February 2003 he won his first point to point at Walton Park but didn't win again between the flags in five attempts over the next two years.

ESPRIT DE COTTE (FR) (1992) b g Lute Antique - Royale de Cotte (Italic) - Won a hurdle and 3 chases between 1996 & 2007. Came to the UK with a big reputation and started favourite for the 1999 Becher Chase on the back of an impressive debut at Stratford. Fell in that race and thereafter pulled up in the Welsh National and finished down the field in the Kim Muir at the Festival. Clearly not living up to expectations he wasn`t that fancied for the 2000 National. He actually ran pretty well and was still in contention when he fell at second Bechers. He then pulled up in both the Whitbread and Hennessy Gold Cups and when he returned in the 2001 National he survived ten fences before deciding to stop at the eleventh sending his last minute replacement jockey Tom Doyle flying over the fence. He was then sold to run in point-to points and became a regular on the south east circuit winning four times. He raced during my brief commentating career and I had the pleasure of calling him home a few times.

FEELS LIKE GOLD (1988) b g Oats - Drom Lady (Royalty) - Won a NH flat race, a hurdle and 5 chases between 1994 & 2001. Initially trained by Martin Pipe for whom he won a seller at Newton Abbot in March 1995 but he spent most of his career with Nicky Richards. Took time to warm for new connections but eventually won two chases at Kelso and two at Ayr. Finished third in the 1999 Eider and ran a blinder in the National that year being prominent throughout before he eventually weakened to finish fifth. On his nest start he ran the race of his life to land the 1999 Becher Chase, winning by an impressive eleven lengths having taken the lead four out. Lost his form thereafter, pulling up in the Welsh National and never got into the 2000 National eventually finishing fourteenth. He unseated early in the 2000 Becher Chase and was caught up in the melee in the Canal Turn in 2001. His last three starts were all over the National fences.

GENERAL WOLFE (1989) ch g  Rolfe - Pillbox (Spartan General) - Won 2 hurdles and 8 chases between 1993 & 2003. Useful chaser in his younger days starting favourite for 1996 Kim Muir but he fell at half way when in the lead. Ended his first season over fences with a distant second behind Moorcroft Boy in the Scottish National. Fancied for the 1997 National but was never competitive and finished a very distant sixteenth. However connections were gearing up for a second attempt in 1998 and after success in the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock things were looking good. However a tendon injury meant that he had to be put away for the season but he reappeared exactly a year later with a second win in the Peter Marsh. He lined up in 1999 and again didn`t look as if Aintree was for him and he finished twelfth. 2001 did not prove to be third time lucky as he was caught up in the melee in the first Canal Turn. Despite his shortcomings as a National horse he fared much better over one circuit finishing fifth in the 2002 Topham and put up probably his finest performance away from Haydock when he finished second to Divet Hill in the 2003 Foxhunters. He last raced under rules at Uttoxeter in May 2003 but he raced in a couple of points to points the following year.

HANAKHAM (IRE) (1999) b g  Phardante - Evas Charm (Carlsberg) - Won 5 chases between 1996 & 2003. Plagued throughout his career by injury. Smart pointer in 1994 & 1995 winning four times for Ron Treloggan (of Double Silk fame). Would have been more had it not been for tendon and back problems. Sent to Ron Hodges in 1996 and won the 1997 Sun Alliance Chase despite a bone crunching mistake at the last fence. More problems and he was off the course for nearly two years. Now in the hands of Martin Pipe he did manage a win at Cheltenham in November 1999 before another lengthy lay-off and another change of trainer. Ginger McCain sent him to Aintree and despite a fall and an unplaced in two races at Haydock and starting at 100-1 he was burdened with my selection for the race. I had always been convinced that Ginger McCain would train another National winner and have never felt more confident about an Aintree outsider. I would of course be proved right...eventually but I had the wrong horse and wrong year. To be fair he was going well...until the second fence when he hit the top and came down. He remained with McCain for the rest of his career and enjoyed a remarkable swan-song when he won two hunter chases at Bangor and a point to point in 2003 at the age of fourteen.

HOLLYBANK BUCK (IRE) (1990) b g  Buckskin - Mayrhofen (Don) - Won a hurdle and 6 chases between 1996 & 2003. Hit a purple patch of form in 1998 winning the Leopardstown Chase and the four mile slog, the Eider Chase at Newcastle. Then chased home the wonderful Young Kenny in both the Midlands and Scottish Nationals (attempts at Welsh and Irish Nationals in 1999-2000 ended with him pulling up). Finished third in the 1999 Becher Chase he ran well for a long time in the 2000 National before fading to finish seventh. Came down early in the mud a year later. Last seen in the 2004 La Touche Cup over the  Punchestown banks course.

KAKI CRAZY (FR) (1995) b g Passing Sale - Radiante Rose (Akarad) - Won 6 hurdle races and 4 chases between 1998 & 2003. Won on his hurdling debut at Clairefontaine and later won a chase at Auteuil. Moved to Martin Pipe in 2000 and was aimed at the National even though he hadn`t shown a great deal in four starts in the UK. He didn`t get very far but he was amongst the leaders when he fell at the third fence. Didn`t return to Aintree and plied his trade thereafter at mostly small meetings. He won a claiming hurdle at Southwell on his last start under rules in August 2003 and later raced unsuccessfully in point-to-points between 2007 & 2010.

LISTEN TIMMY (NZ) (1989) b g Coral Reef - Calamity (Bally Royal) - Winner on the flat and in four chases in his native New Zealand and six chases in the UK between 1997 & 2001. Won his first three chases at Uttoxteter and took to the Aintree fences well with victory in the 1999 Topham (beating Lindens Lotto by two lengths). Although he won his next start at Uttoxeter in May his form thereafter deserted him. He ran eight more times and was pulled up in five of them. In the National he pulled up both times although in 2000 he never recovered after being badly hampered at the first by a horse falling directly in front of him and to be fair he got a lot further than most of his rivals when pulling up at the Chair (again having been very badly hampered) in 2001. Raced just one more time at Ayr two weeks later. Ran in three point to points in 2002.

MERRY PEOPLE (IRE) (1988) b g Lafontaine - Merry Madness (Raise you Ten) - Won 5 hurdles and 10 chases between 1993 and 2001. Won a grade 3 chase at the now defunct Tralee racecourse in August 2000 but hadn`t won for over two years when he started at 200-1 on his UK debut in the National. But, having made up considerable ground after Valentines he was certainly not running like such an unconsidered runner as he ranged up alongside the leaders approaching the second last fence. Oh what might have been......he hit the top and came down only to be remounted to finish a distant last of seventeen finishers. Unseated in both 2000 and 2001 before ambling on his own miles ahead of the remainder for nearly two circuits. Sold immediately after the National he ran in two races in Stratford in June 2001 pulling up both times.

MISTER ONE (1991) b/br g  Buckley - Miss Redlands (Dubassof) - Won 5 chases between 1999 & 2004. Winning pointer who won novice chases at Cheltenhams Open and December meetings before finishing a distant third behind Gloris Victis in the Feltham Novices Chase. Finished third in the National Hunt Chase at the 2000 Festival. The following season he nearly managed the double at the Military meetings at Sandown winning the Royal Artillery Gold Cup before finishing second in the Grand Military Gold Cup. In the National itself he survived the first eight fences but hit Valentines and his rider was shot out the side door. Thereafter finished a very distant eighth in the Whitbread Gold Cup. He later won a National (the Devon National at Exeter) in 2002 and last raced at Cheltenham in April 2004.

MOONDIGUA (IRE) (1992) b g  Beau Sher - Donna Chimense (Royal Gunner) - Won 2 hurdles and 3 chases between 1997 & 2001. Won 2 NH flat races and 2 hurdles in Ireland when trained by Aiden O`Brien, Moved to the UK to be trained by Martin Pipe in 1998 and won on his debut for new connections at Warwick. Useful novice in 1999-2000 winning three chases. Lightly raced thereafter pulling up in 2000 Scottish and Welsh Nationals. Spectacularly unseated at the Chair sending his pilot Shay Barry into orbit. Sold out of Martin Pipes stable at the end of the season he returned to Ireland and was last seen pulling up at Cork in November 2001.

MORAL SUPPORT (IRE) (1992)  ch g  Zaffaran - Marions Pride (Pry) - Won 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 1997 & 2004. Started co-favourite for the 2001 National on what was only his tenth start over fences. He had won four races on the bounce in the autumn including victory in the Rehearsal Chase and had finished second in the Welsh National. Despite a disappointing performance at Haydock on his last start as a proven mud-lark who would relish the heavy conditions he was extremely well fancied. He didn`t get very far as he was in rear when he was caught up in the melee at the first Canal and he was not able to clear the fence. His form fell apart thereafter and he was subsequently pulled up in a Welsh National and unplaced in a Hennessy. He did run Gunner Welburn to five lengths in a small race at Newbury in 2003 but that was about it. He last raced at Folkestone in January 2004.

NOBLE LORD (1993) ch g Lord Bud - Chasers Bar (Oats) - Won 4 hurdles and 2 chases between 1996 & 2002. Won his first three races over hurdles in the autumn of 1996 and won a novice chase over the Mildmay course at the Becher meeting in 1998. Chased home Paris Pike in that seasons Scottish National and finished eighth in the race in 2001 after his National experience. He was only a little horse and the fences probably looked very big to him but he got as far as the thirteenth fence. Missed the 2001-02 season and only raced once more when finishing a long way adrift at Cheltenham in November 2002.

NO RETREAT (NZ) (1993) b g  Exaatic - Lerwick (Theoreau) - Won 7 chases between 1998 & 2008. Third on his sole start over hurdles in his native New Zealand. He won his first two starts over chases in the UK in November 1998 and finished third in the Dipper Novices Chase at Newcastle. The following season on his debut he won a listed race at Wincanton and that turned out to be as good as it got as a handicapper. He came to the 2001 National on the back of pulling up in the both the Great Yorkshire Chase and the De Vere Gold Cup. Very badly hampered at the Canal Turn he just about managed to crawl through the fence but his race was over and his rider Jason Maguire (making his National debut) wisely called it a day before the Chair. He never managed to get into the National again but did complete the course in a Topham, Becher Chase and Foxhunters without ever troubling the leaders. Was later a useful hunter chaser and won a couple of point to points.

NORTHERN STARLIGHT (1991) b g Northern State - Ganadora (Good Times) - Won 9 hurdles and 7 chases between 1994 & 2003. Failed to win in twenty two starts on the flat when trained by Pat Murphy. Took nine starts to get his head in front over hurdles finally wining a seller at Taunton in September 2005 and proved that was no fluke by wining another similar contest at the Somerset track a month later. He missed 1995-96 season and when he reappeared in February 1997 he was now in the hands of Martin Pipe. He won six out of seven handicap hurdles between then and May (the only blip came when he fell at the last when leading in the Swinton Hurdle at Haydock). Went chasing the following season and won five of his first eight chases (never out of the first two). In his second season as a chaser he finished behind Red Marauder in the First National Bank Gold Cup at Ascot before landing the Tripleprint Gold Cup at Cheltenham. He didn`t win again for over a year but ran consistently in handicap company. He was on the small side but took to the National fences providing Martin Pipe and A P McCoy with their second victory in the Topham. He was very lightly raced thereafter, lining up in the 2001 National without a prep race. On the rain sodden ground the fences must have appeared huge to the little horse and he only got as far as first Bechers when he unseated Tom Scudamore who was having his first National ride. He pulled up in the Scottish National at the end of the season and when he returned to Aintree in 2002 he reverted back to the Topham where he was still in contention when he unseated five out. He last raced at Wincanton in March 2003.

PADDYS RETURN (IRE) (1992)  b g Khayasi - Bayazilda (Bustno) - Won 6 hurdles and 2 chases between 1995 & 2004. Will be remembered as the villain of the 2001 National. Having unseated Adrian Maguire at the third fence he continued riderless until the Canal Turn when he decided to refuse. Running down the fence, the blinkered animal collided with Amberleigh House and in doing started a chain reaction which put ten horses out of the race. Continued riderless and nearly did the same at the Canal on the second circuit. He unseated on his next visit in the 2001 Becher Chase and there were many who breathed a sigh of relief as he ran onto the Mildmay course out of harms away. Lets not forget that this was a very classy animal who won the 1996 Triumph Hurdle and was a very useful long distance hurdler with victories in the Champion Stayers Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival in 1997 and later that year won the valuable Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot. He was also something of a globe-trotter winning valuable hurdle races at Cagnes-Sur-Mer and contesting a French Champion Hurdle. As a chaser he won a race over the Cheltenham Cross Country course, finished second in the 2000 Becher Chase, ran in a La Touche Cup at Punchestown and finished a close fifth in Italy`s premier chase the Gran Premio di Merano in 2002. Unfortunately he sustained an injury in that race which put paid to an assault on the Velka Pardubicka and he was off the course for twenty months. He finished a long way last on his reappearance, a hurdle at Stratford in May 2004 and connections called time on his varied and exciting career.

PAPILLON (IRE) (1991) b g Lafontaine - Glens Princess (Prince Hansel) Won a hurdle and 8 chases between 1996 & 2003. Was part of  the second father and son combination to land the National for Ireland in two years after Bobbyjos success in 1999. A first National win (and ride) for Ruby Walsh and his father Ted, one of Ireland top amateur riders who had strangely only ever had one ride in the race. Won on his debut over hurdles and at Punchestown in February 1996 and nine months later won on his chase debut at Fairyhouse. Ran in the 1997 Irish National, an audacious attempt for an inexperienced six year old but he ran surprisingly well and finished fourth behind the English trained Mudahim. The following year after a disappointing performance in the Kim Muir at the Festival he finished second to Bobbyjo at Fairyhouse.  In 1999 he finished a distant fourth in the Irish Hennessy and flopped at the Festival for a second year running (unsuited by two miles in the Queen Mother Champion Chase). He was entered for the National but connections withdrew him at the last minute in order to have a third attempt at the Irish National instead. For the first time at Fairyhouse he disappointed finishing tenth behind Glebe Lad. He showed little over fences the following season and had prep races over hurdles before the 2000 National. He was available at 33-1 on the morning of the race but there were may in the racing press who fancied him - why not he was running on ground he loved, he had never failed to complete the course and he was carrying eight pounds less than Bobbyjo. Many racegoers obviously agreed with the experts. His odds plummeted during the day and he eventually started at 10-1. In the race itself he was always prominent. He led at the twenty sixth fence and was driven out by Ruby Walsh to win by one and a quarter lengths from the lightly raced Mely Moss. The following December he did what a number of recent National winners have found impossible to do - he won, and a valuable chase at that at Leopardstowns Christmas meeting. Unfortunately foot and mouth restrictions after his next start resulted in all racing in Ireland being suspended and there was talk of him not being allowed to leave Ireland to defend his Aintree crown. At the last minute travel restrictions were lifted and he duly took his place but on desperately heavy ground his chances seemed forlorn. He did well to get round having been baulked at the nineteenth and remounted. The following season he missed Aintree due to a strained knee but he was entered again in 2003 but after two lacklustre performances over fences and a disappointing display over hurdles at Punchestown in March 2003 his retirement was announced

RED MARAUDER (1990) ch g Gunner B - Cover Your Money (Precipice Wood) - Won 3 hurdles and 6 chases between 1993 & 2003. Very lightly raced winner of the 2001 Grand National who managed only twenty one starts in a ten year career. Started with a 33-1 win in a novice hurdle at Hexham and won twice more during his novice campaign. His hurdling career came to a painful end when he broke down at Carlisle in October 1994 and he was off the course for three years. When he finally returned to the racecourse he won on his chase debut at Hexham but was then absent for another ten months. In the autumn of 1999 he was finally able to stay sound long enough to put up a string of victories together, two facile wins in small fields at Carlisle and Worcester which was followed with an eleven length win in the First National Bank Gold Cup at Ascot. So impressive was he that there was briefly talk of an assault on the Gold Cup for which he had earned a quote of 50-1 but once again the problems set in. This time it was a virus and more of the dreaded leg trouble and he was off for a further fifteen months. Always running well fresh he won on his reappearance at Wetherby but was well beaten by Gloria Victis when suffering his first defeat over fences in the Racing Post Chase. Attracting each-way support he was an 18-1 shot for the National but his race did not go according to plan. He jumped poorly and fell at first Bechers. A disconsolate Richard Guest told the BBC afterwards "I don`t think we will be coming back after that". He next ran in the Irish Grand National and was unplaced behind Comanche Court. Remembering Guests words I was surprised to see him line up again in the National of 2001 - he had managed a win over three miles at Market Rasen (another win on a season debut) and had run over hurdles  as well. Others clearly remembered his performance of twelve months ago and he started at odds of 33-1. This was the year of the freakishly Somme-like conditions that saw only seven horses survive a circuit and just two left by second Bechers. Somehow he was surviving despite putting up a shocking display of jumping. Fortunately he had a rider of extreme bravery, fortitude and patience who somehow nursed the horse over the final quarter of the race and by the second last fence he had drawn clear to win by a distance from his sole rival Smarty. An emotional Guest lept off almost immediately after the winning post as the horse looked absolutely exhausted. It was an amazing performance for a horse who connections had conceded was not a natural jumper. Tendon problems and heat in his leg prevented a return to Aintree in 2002 to defend his crown but he was kept  in training with a possible attempt on the Hennessy mooted. In the end it was not until February 2003 that he next saw a racecourse when in a hurdle at Newcastle he was given a tender ride by Guest to finish fourth. The 2003 National was the plan and he was still in the race until National week when those dreaded leg troubles returned and his retirement was announced.

SPANISH MAIN (1994)  b g  Spanish Place - Willow Grouse (Giolla Mea) - Won 4 hurdles and 3 chases between 1998 & 2006. Still a novice when he lined up at Aintree and was having just his sixth start over fences. Unseated at the very first fence and finished a very distant nineteenth in the Scottish National. Competed in minor races thereafter and did manage a win at Exeter in 2005. He last raced at Warwick in March 2006. Showed little in eight point to points in 2007 & 2008.

TRESOR DE MAI (1994) ch g Grand Tresor - Lady Night (Pompon Rouge) - Won 3 hurdles and 6 chases between 1998 & 2005.  Won four times in his native France in 1998 and won on his UK debut at Lingfield in January 1999. On the back of that success was sent of odds on favourite in valuable novice chase at Warwick which attracted just two runners. He was beaten a head by future Champion Chase winner Flagship Uberalles and was then to finish behind the same horse on each of his next three races, the Arkle at the festival, Maghull Novices Chase at Aintree and Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter on his first start of the next campaign. Won the valuable Tote Silver Cup at Ascot in 2000 and was running consistently well in top class races. Didn`t appear an obvious National horse and he didn`t run like one either falling at the second fence in 2001 and he pulled up in the Scottish National two weeks later. Thereafter showed his liking for Ascot by wining two more races there and continued racing in good company until January 2005.

UNSINKABLE BOXER (IRE) (1989) b g Sheer Grit - Softly Sarah (Haraby) - Won a NH flat race, 5 hurdles and 2 chases between 1993 & 2005. Trained initially by his breeder Mary Conlon in Ireland he managed just a sole win in a flat race at Tipperary in thirteen races. Then he moved to the UK but showed little in three starts including finishing down the field at 150-1 in the 1995 Supreme Novices Hurdle. Moving to Martin Pipe however he was revitalised in the 1997-98  campaign winning the Gold Card Hurdle Final at the Cheltenham Festival and the Sefton Novices Hurdle at Aintree. He saw his first fence at the relatively late age of ten but, after hacking up in novice chases at Uttoxeter and Warwick talk of a Gold Cup assault was raised. He was of course woefully inexperienced for such a task and was pulled up in the blue riband. He then disappeared for nearly two years and after competing in a couple of points to freshen him up the audacious plan was to run him in the National. He fared considerably better than many that day and was one of the seven brave souls who set out on the final circuit before he called it a day at the nineteenth fence. He returned to Ireland and ended his days with his breeder who raised a few eyebrows when she turned him out in a hurdle race at Naas in January 2005 at the age of sixteen. Starting a 100-1 he finished a distant last of the six finishers.

VILLAGE KING (IRE) (1993) b g  Roi Danzig - Honorino (Blushing Groom) - Won 2 hurdles and 7 chases between 1997 & 2005. A winner on the flat he made an impressive start to his chasing career winning his first four starts in the summer/autumn of 1998. By the time he lined up in the 2000 National he had only once been out of the first three in seventeen starts under rules (the blip came when he finished unplaced behind Marlborough in the 2000 National Hunt Handicap Chase). In the National itself he fell at the  twentieth when in contention and a year later he was caught up at the melee at the first Canal Turn. Later finished tenth in the Scottish National, twice ran in the Becher Chase and tried his luck over the Cheltenham cross country course. He did win win one fairly valuable chase, the Golden Miller at Cheltenham in 2002. He last was seen at Cheltenham in April 2005.

2002 - Bindaree

Bindaree.jpeg

The winner

Apart from his National win Bindaree had no luck in five other visits to Aintree. He was a surprise early faller in the Becher Chase in 2002 and fell at Valentines when travelling strongly in 2003. In the National itself he never troubled the leaders again. In 2003 he made a terrible mistake at first Bechers when he was down on his belly and whilst he made up ground past tired horses he finished a never dangerous sixth. He got home in his own time in 2005 and in 2004 he was unlucky to be hampered at first Bechers and Llewellyn had no chance. He did manage to win the Welsh National in 2003 and was twice runner up in the Rehearsal Chase when it was still run at Chepstow. He last raced in the 2005 Becher Chase where he finished for the first time albeit a distant eighth. Connections were eyeing another tilt at the National but afterwards he was found to have damaged a hind leg and the decision was taken to retire him.

Leading Fancies

Conditions could not have been more different from twelve months ago with Aintree bathed in warm sunshine and the ground riding on the quick side of good. It was another competitive field. What events of the past year had done was to reiterate that anything was still possible in the Grand National and that it was still a race that anyone could win. There was controversy when the weights were published as the ante-post favourite Moor Lane, winner of the Great Yorkshire Chase was only allotted 9-7 meaning that he needed no less than thirty horses to drop out before he could get a run. After an anxious wait he narrowly missed the cut ending up an unused reserve and having to run in the Topham instead. Even worse there were two horses with recent winning form over the National fences who also missed out. Last years Foxhunters winner Gunner Welburn and the hero of the Becher Chase, Amberleigh House were denied runs. The latters trainer Ginger McCain was naturally furious fuming "there's some right dross in there". Bearing in mind that there were runnners left in who were still technically novices McCain appeared to have a point and there was certainly an argument that the Aintree factor should be taken into account when framing the handicap in future. Of those that did get a run MARLBOROUGH headed the weights, one of the best staying chasers in the country and probably the best last season winning all three starts including the substitute Gold Cup run at Sandown in April. He had just had two starts this year but this former Cheltenham Festival winner had to be on any short-list especially as he was at such generous odds. BLOWING WIND had remounted to finish third in the mud last year and was strongly fancied to run a big race again on the back of his last gasp victory in the Mildmay of Flete at the Festival. A P had chosen this one out of Pipes runners. AD HOC had been runner up in the 2000 Scottish Grand National and a week later turned the Whitbread Gold Cup into a procession. Aimed for this all year and lightly raced he had finished third at the Festival last time out. He had an excellent chance although this was his Aintree debut. BEAU had been the unlucky horse in this last year when he unseated at the twentieth fence when leading. He had not shown much this season and was down the field behind The Last Fling at Warwick last time. He had recently changed hands and was now running in the colours of Trevor Hemmings. It was notable that the stable jockey had chosen this one over Bindaree. The leading Irish challenger was another Aintree debutant DAVIDS LAD, a winner of four chases in the spring of 2001 incuding the Irish Grand National. Lightly raced since he had finished third over an inadequate trip at the Festival last time out. SMARTY had survived the carnage of last year and covered himself with glory to finish second. He subsequently had filled the runners up spot again behind the missing Amberleigh House in the Becher and had been running over hurdles to keep him fresh. He held each way prospects. PARIS PIKE had been a very talented novice chaser in 1999 winning five chases in a row culminating with victory of the Scottish National. Off the course for eighteen months and not as good since but was attracting solid support (including my pound each way). One unusual runner was the Martin Pipe trained MAJED, a winner of a flat race in France but failed over jumps. He had proved himself a useful hurdler having never been out of the first two in eight starts in the UK. However, he had never raced over fences in the UK. The National was a bizarre choice for his UK chase debut.

The Class of 2002

ACKZO (1993) b g Ardross - Trimor Gold (Goldking) - Won 2 chases and 2 hurdles between 1998 & 2003. Won probably the worst renewal of the Midlands Grand National in 2000 (four of the intended runners were withdrawn on the day leaving just six horses to plod round). Pretty impressive though as it was only his fourth start over fences. His fifth start was the Irish Grand National where he started joint favourite but was pulled up. Stayed forever and ran in several long distance chases in the run up to his assault on the 2002 National. He didn`t manage a win but finished third in the Eider Chase. Pulled up at Aintree and last raced at Ayr in February 2003

BEAU (IRE) (1993) ch g  Zaffaran - Sand Martin (Menelke) - Won NH flat race and 4 chases between 1998 & 2002. Triumph and disaster often go hand in hand and for me two of the iconic sights of the decade involve Beau. First his memorable distance victory in the 2000 Whitbread Gold Cup where he spread-eagled a top field of seasoned staying chasers who were left toiling in the Sandown mud. Then there is the sight of Beau galloping away riderless from the twentieth fence in the 2001 National sandwiched between Red Marauder and Smarty with a forlorn Carl Llewellyn running behind him. Beaus victory at Sandown capped his remarkable novice campaign which, after a victory in a Haydock novice chase saw him beat another field of seasoned handicappers in Doncasters Great Yorkshire Chase. Victory followed in the Reynoldstown Novice Chase at Ascot before a decision was made to try him against the handicappers in the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival rather than the more obvious target, the RSA Chase. He found the wonderful Marlborough too good for him at Cheltenham and then came his finest hour at Sandown. Amazingly he never won another race but was thereafter campaigned in the highest company with the National as his target. In 2001 he led for most for the way and was very unlucky. Awkward at the seventeenth the reins went over his head and his rider was left frantically trying to grab them and steer the horse at the same time. It almost looked as if he was being steered by his mane ! An awkward jump at the twentieth and that was it. Beau was caught by Bechers whilst Llewellyn telephoned his trainer to see whether they should remount for a share of the place money. Common sense prevailed - they didn`t. Sold thereafter Beau ran in 2002 in the colours of Trevor Hemmings and was again going well when he seemed to stumble after clearing the fourteenth fence safely and Llewellyn was pitched over the horses head. Beau continued riderless and gave the winner and runner-up a good run for their money. He finished down the field in his next race, the Attheraces Gold Cup (as the Whitbread was now known) and was not seen out again. In my view the unluckiest loser in recent National history - he should have won in 2001.

BIRKDALE (1992) gr g  Roselier  Clonroche Lady (Charlottesville Lady) - Won 8 hurdles and 4 chases between 1997 & 2004. Never hit the headlines but did notch up four straight wins in novice hurdles in 1997-98, landed a hat-trick in handicap hurdles in January/February 1999 and three chases the following season. Finished third in the Rowland Meyrick in 2003 and made his only trip to Ireland to finish second in the Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park. Completed the National of 2002 but was then off the course for twenty months and showed nothing thereafter. Last ran at Carlisle in March 2004 and won his only point to point the following year at Marden.

CARRYONHARRY (IRE) (1994) gr g  Roselier - Bluebell Avenue (Boreen Beag) - Won 7 chases and 4 hurdles between 1998 & 2008. Won his first starts over fences in novice company so it was a big ask on his next race to go up against seasoned handicap chasers in the William Hill Trophy at the Festival. Perhaps not surprisingly he was found wanting finishing unplaced. If that had been too stiff a task it seemed absolutely crazy to run him on his fifth start over fences in the National. He appeared scared by the first fence, tried to jump it at an angle and came crashing down. He didn`t continue riderless. Fortunately these madcap exploits didn`t put him off and whilst he didn`t reach the heights as a handicap chaser he did win a chase at Kemptons Christmas Festival later that year and ran without success in two Scottish Nationals. He was, however a revelation as a point-to-pointer in the south-east area winning no less that twenty races between 2007 & 2010 and he also won hunter chases at Stratford and Huntingdon. A wonderful servant to his connections.

CELIBATE (IRE) (1991) ch g Shy Groom - Dance Alone (Monteverdi) - Won 3 hurdles and 10 chases between 1994 & 2004. Scored his sole flat victory on the beach at Laytown in 1995. Won his first four novice chases in 1996 and finished third in the 1997 Arkle Challenge Trophy. Top two mile chaser winning 1999 Game Spirit Chase and BMW Chase at Punchestown and raced in a whole host of top class chases up to two and a half miles. Also raced as far afield as Belgium and was unluckily brought down in 2000 Nakayama Grand Jump in Japan. Wins came harder to come by as the years went on and it was decided to test that old theory that two and a half mile specialists excelled in the National. He did get home in 2002 but in his own time and probably didn`t stay. Thereafter an attempt on the Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Republic was on the cards but he was withdrawn half an hour before the race due to the very heavy conditions. He missed the following season and after a lacklustre performance on his reappearance at Kempton in February 2004 connections decided that the old campaigner had done enough.

FRANTIC TAN (IRE) (1992) ch g Zaffaran - Brownskin (Bucksin) - For two weeks in February 2001 he was one of the best chasers in the country. Having turned over an odds-on favourite Behrajan in a novice chase at Newbury, two weeks later, starting favourite for the recognised Grand National trial, the De Vere Gold Cup at Haydock he slammed a competitive field by seventeen lengths. It was a truly staggering performance for a horse having only his fourth start over fences. As a result of this performance he ran in the Martell Cup and the Gold Cup replacement race at Sandown. He unseated in the first race and finished tailed off last in the latter. That was it really. The following year he lined up in the National with form figures  of 1up-0pu. He lasted three fences.

GUN `N` ROSES II (1994) gr g (2002) Royal Charter - Offenbach - Won a flat race, 3 hurdles & 7 chases between 1998 & 2005. A winner on the flat and twice over hurdles at Pau in France. He won on his UK debut at Uttoxeter and shaped into quite a useful novice chaser in 2000-01 with wins at Chepstow, Warwick and Uttoxeter. Only managed one win at Doncaster the following year and started a 100-1 outsider for the National. Fell at the seventh when in rear. Later developed into a useful hunter chaser winning twice at Haydock. Returned twice to Aintree finishing third in the 2004 Foxhunters and unseating at the big ditch the following year in what was to be his final race.

INIS CARA (IRE) (1992) b g Carlingford Castle - Good Sailing (Scorpio) - Won a NH flat race, 4 hurdles and 4 chases. Won a point-to-point in 1997. Tough individual for Michael Hourigan in Ireland running twelve times in 1999 winning on New Years day at Tramore and ended the year winning the valuable Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstowns Christmas Festival. The following season he was the subject of a massive ante-post plunge in the 2001 National despite the fact that he hadn`t won all season (the closest being a distant third in the James Nicholson Wine Merchant Chase at Down Royal chasing home Gold Cup winner Looks Like Trouble). He made the journey from Ireland trained by Michael Hourigan and then he and the owners fell out and he arrived at Aintree officially in the hands of Venetia Williams although he hasn't yet made it to her Herefordshire stables. He ended up starting co-favourite but took the most horrible looking fall at the fourth fence. He showed very little thereafter and was sent off at more realistic odds of 66-1 a year later. He got a lot further and pulled up at second Canal Turn.  Last raced at Chepstow in April 2004.

INN AT THE TOP (1992) b g Top Ville - Woolpack (Golden Fleece) - Loved Doncaster winning four of his seven career wins at the Yorkshire track. In good form in 1999-2000 winning at Doncaster & Ayr and finished third in the Mildmay of Flete behind Dark Stranger at the Festival. The following year put up his best performance in defeat when finishing second to Heidi II in the Great Yorkshire Chase at Doncaster but missed the National when he was a last minute absentee due to the state of the ground. When he did line up a year later it was on the back of a lacklustre display at Haydock. He got no further than the first at Aintree and then pulled up at half way in the Scottish National two weeks later. That was it.

LOGICIAN (NZ) (1991) b g  Lord Ballina - Thornton Lady (Sound Reason) - Won on the flat, over hurdles and landed the valuable A V Hiskens Steeplechase at Moonee Valley in Australia before moving to the UK in 2000. Chased home Best Mate in the Scilly Isles Novices Chase on his UK debut and later won at Bangor in May 2001. The National was only his ninth start over UK fences although he had showed his well-being with a fourth in the Grand Annual at the Festival. Was unlucky at Aintree as Carryonharry crossed him mid-air and officially he was brought down at the first fence. Later that year he won a chase at Wolverhamptons penultimate jumps meeting. Entered for the National in 2003 but shortly after the weights were published his retirement was announced.

LYREEN WONDER (1993) ch g  Derrylin - Coole Pilate (Celtic Cone) (2002) - Won a hurdle and 6 chases between 1998 & 2002. Very useful Irish horse who won the valuable Troytown Chase at Navan in 2000 and 2001 and the Leopardstown Chase in 2002. 40-1 seemed rather long odds for this very consistent animal who had only once been out of the first three in all his completed starts over fences. He is the mystery of the 2002 National. Having suffered a fairly innocuous unseated rider at the twentieth he continued riderless until the twenty seventh fence when a number of runners fell. He seemed unsighted and turned over in a nasty looking somersault. He lay motionless on the ground. The mystery deepened when research revealed that he never ran again . Was Lyreen Wonder a third fatality of the 2002 National ? There has even been debate on the Racing Forum about his fate. However it appears he survived. If you type his name in Google you will find a brief article which refers to an interview with his trainer Arthur Moore who confirmed that the horse was very stiff and sore after his tumble and that he was taken to Liverpool Vetinary Hosiptal for tests where X-rays revealed that nothing was broken. So it looks like he survived.

MANX MAGIC (USA) (1993) b g Imperial Falcon - Spirited Away I (Vaguely Noble) - Won 4 hurdles and 3 chases between 1998 & 2002.  Unsuccessful in seven National Hunt Flat races between 1998 and 1999 but won his first two hurdle races in the UK. Appeared over hurdles in both 2000 and 2001. Was still a novice and having only his seventh start over fences when he lined up in the 2002 National although he had won three chases and had finished sixth in the National Hunt Chase. Predictably it all went horribly wrong at Aintree. Always behind he took a crashing fall at the twentieth, broke his neck and was killed. Novices have no place in a Grand National !!!

MARLBOROUGH(IRE) (1992) br g Strong Gale - Wrekenoyan (Tarqogan) - Won a hurdle and 10 chases between 1997 & 2003. Jumping was a major problem in his early starts over fences as he either won or fell/unseated. In 1999-2000 he chased home the brilliant but ill-fated Gloria Victis in the Racing Post Chase and won the William Hill Trophy Chase at the Cheltenham Festival before being decisively beaten in the Scottish National. The following year he was lightly raced but won all three of his starts. He would have been one of the leading contenders for the Gold Cup but this was 2001, foot and mouth year and there was no Festival and he had to make do with the Sandown substitute at the end of the season. He won it though in a thrilling dual up the Sandown hill beating Go Ballistic by a short head. 2001 was his year - would he have won the Gold Cup ? He would have gone close. Another light campaign followed in 2001-02 but he showed that he was not good enough to win a Gold Cup this year finishing fourth behind Best Mate. As for the National - well he looked a picture in the paddock but the experience was brief - he was one of eight fallers at the first fence. In 2002-03 he won the Charlie Hall Chase and probably put up his best performance in defeat when running Best Mate to a length and a half in the King George. Apart from that the season yielded little else as he was well beaten in both the Hennessy and Cheltenham Gold Cups. The years were catching up with him but he enjoyed one final day in the sun when he won the Racing Post Chase in 2004. He last raced at Aintree in April 2005.

MELY MOSS (FR) (2001) ch g  Tip Moss - The Exception (Melyno) - Won a hurdle and 3 chases between 1994 & 2003. Won on the flat, over hurdles and a chase at France and on his debut in the UK at Uttoxeter in January 1997. He was then off the course for two years with leg problems and next saw a racecourse at Aintree when he lined up in the 1999 Foxhunters where he put up an excellent performance to finish second behind Elegant Lord. Confirmed his (brief) well-being at Cheltenham in May when he won a hunter chase. Then the leg problems returned and he had a virus as well which meant that plans for his National prep run in February had to be shelved so he lined up in the 2000 National without a run for three hundred an forty six days. He was kept fresh by spells out hunting instead. It was one of the training performance of the year and Charlie Egerton said afterwards he was feeling "numb" after his fragile chaser had run the race of his life to finish second. Close up at the last he was full of running but just could not peg back Papillon and went down by one and a quarter lengths. He returned in 2001 again without the benefit of a prep race but was unluckily caught up in the melee at the Canal Turn. In 2002 he was never a factor and fell two out when behind (he was remounted to compete the course in last place and wrote his place in history as he was the last horse ever to be remounted in a National). He raced just one more time in the 2003 La Touche Cup at Punchestown where he pulled up before half way.

MURTS MAN (IRE) (1994) b g  Be My Native - Autumn Queen (Menelek) - Won 3 chases between 1997 & 2008. Unseated in 2001 Scottish National. Did win in a small field at Chepstow his race before 2002 National where he was pulled up at half way and suffered same fate in the Betfred Gold Cup. Later in the year he finished fifth in the Welsh National. Didn`t win between the flags and last raced in a hunter chase at Exeter in 2006.

NIKI DEE (IRE) (1990) b g Phardante - Curragh Breeze (Furry Glen) - Won a hurdle and 4 chases between 1995 & 2002. Lightly raced individual who only raced nineteen times over fences. Had a reputation for being a poor jumper although he did finish second in the 1999 Cathcart Cup at the Festival, 2000 Great Yorkshire Chase and despite some sloppy jumping finished third in the 2000 National. Later ran poorly in the Punchestown Festival and was off the course for nearly two years. The 2002 National was his comeback race but he only got as far as the fourth fence when his poor jumping let him down again. He was twelve by now and only raced once more at Perth later that month.

PARIS PIKE (IRE) (1992) b g  Satco - Bouise (Royal Buck) - Won 6 hurdles and 5 chases between 2000 & 2006. Enjoyed a stunning novice campaign winning five chases culminating with a three length win over Noble Lord in the 2000 Scottish Grand National. Off the course for eighteen months and was nowhere near as good thereafter. Fell at the first in the 2002 National and pulled up in the Scottish National. Retired after some lacklustre performances over hurdles in March 2003.

SAMUEL WILDERSPIN (1992) b g Henbit - Littoral (Crash Course) - Won NH flat race, 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 1997 & 2006. Liked Warwick (won five races there), highlight of career when lifting amateur riders chase at Cheltenhams open meeting in 2001 and later that season won at Haydock and finished second in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster. As a result was fancied for the 2002 National but only got as far as the fourth fence. Pulled up in Scottish National on his next start. Didn`t win under rules again but did win two point-to-points later between 2006 & 2009. Last raced under rules at Hereford in May 2006.

STREAMSTOWN (IRE) (1994) br g Rashar - Lady Torsil (Torus) - Won NH flat race, a hurdle & 6 chases between 1998 & 2003. Won a race over the Mildmay course at the Becher Meeting in 2000 the first of a hat-trick of wins that winter. Ran credibly enough to finish sixth in Whats Up Boys Hennessy in 2001. It was his resolute performance in heavy conditions to lift the Singer & Friedlander Grand National Trial at Uttoxeter in January 2002 that suggested he may be a National horse but he flopped on a return to the Staffordshire course in the Midlands National and he really struggled at Aintree toiling in the rear throughout and finishing a distant ninth of eleven finishers. Only raced two more times and was totally tailed off and clearly out of his depth on his final start when amateur ridden in the 2003 Tommy Whittle Chase at Haydock.

STRUGGLES GLORY (IRE) (1991) b g Kamehamesha - Another Struggle (Cheral) - Won 6 chases between 1997 & 2003. That does`t really tell the whole story as he was a phenomenal point-to-pointer on the south-east circuit winning fifteen of his twenty three starts and racing until 2005. No luck at Aintree though as he fell at the first in the 2000 Foxhunters and was brought down at the first in the National two years later. Briefly was a very useful handicapper in 2000-2001 and won two races at Kempton winning a valuable handicap at the Christmas meeting 2000. Started favourite for the Racing Post Chase that year and finished fourth.

SUPER FRANKY (IRE) (1993) ch g  Lanfranco - Teazle (Quayside) - Won NH flat race, 4 hurdles and 4 chases between 1997 & 2002. Irish challenger and winner of the Grand National Anorak "Never heard of him" award for the 2002 National which was his sole visit to the UK. Had I checked my form book I would have known that he had won the 2000 Munster National run that year at Cork. Later finished fifteenth in the Galway Plate and then raced in Irish point-to-points being victorious once. Was killed in a fall in a Clonmel point-to-point in May 2004.

THE LAST FLING (IRE) (1990) ch g Avocate - Highways Last (Royal Highway) - Won 5 hurdles and 9 chases between 1995 & 2002. Tended to make mistakes and he either fell or unseated rider in fourteen of his forty five chases. Won five in his novice hurdle campaign and his first two chases but displayed that erratic jumping that was to plague his career when he unseated in the RSA Chase. Loved Haydock and in 1999-2000 won their three premier chases, the Edward Hanmer, Peter Marsh and De Vere Gold Cup. I thought he would be a good each way bet for that years Gold Cup but he ran no sort of race at Cheltenham and was pulled up. He did finish seventh in that years National though. Unseated early in 2001 but he blazed the trail in 2002 leading from the start and holding a clear lead over he water. He was not headed until the twenty third when he made a mistake and he looked to be squeezed for room as he took the Canal and suffered a heavy fall. Tragically he broke a shoulder which necessitated his destruction. He was a very popular animal and deserved better. He was campaigned in many of the top chases and whilst he never made the frame he ran in a Scottish National, Midlands National and two Whitbread Gold Cups

WICKED CRACK (IRE) (1993) b m KIngs Ride - Mighty Crack (Deep Run) - Won 4 hurdles and a chase between 1998 & 2002. Fair hurdler and chaser but was still a novice when she lined up at Aintree in what was only her ninth start over fences. She led at the first and...fell (going well at the time though). Ran afterwards in the Guinness Gold Cup at the Punchestown festival and was totally tailed off. She actually pulled up but when two of her rivals fell at the last fence she rejoined the race to collect the fifth place prize money of £1,983. Not seen out again and I assume she was retired to the paddocks. She has produced several foals and her most talented progeny was Cue Card !
