2003 - Monty's Pass
The winner
A very worthy winner on the day Monty's Pass is the forgotten winner of the Noughties. Hiked in the weights as a result he was always going to struggle to retain his title and to be honest no-one expected that he would be able to do so. In the circumstances he ran well in 2004 although he could only finish a distant fourth having been outpaced since second Bechers. He ran in the race one more time in 2005 finishing down the field and was retired.
Leading Fancies
The 2003 renewal was an absolute cracker with several horses vying for favouritsm. It was probably the most open renewal since 1964 and there were no ridiculous eliminations this year. YOULNEVERWALKALONE making his National debut had won half his races under rules. This season he had won three chases in a row culminating with a narrow win in the National Hunt Handicap Chase at Cheltenham with several of his rivals toiling in his wake. Clearly he would be popular with the "red" half of Merseyside and at one stage there were fears amongst the bookies that he would be sent off the hottest favourite in the races history. In the end the "blue" half must have kept their money in their pockets as favouritism at the 'off" went to the Paul NIcholls trained SHOTGUN WILLY, a very useful chaser who had won the AON (now Denman) Chase in 2001 beating the then best chaser in the land First Gold. Second in the 2002 Scottish National he picked up a leg injury that kept him off the course for eleven months. In what was proably the training feat of the season he won an ultra-competitive Red Square Vodka Gold Cup at Haydock on his seasonal reappearance putting him bang in contention for this. IRIS BLEU had been unconsidered at 100-1 last year and didn't get as far as first Bechers. What a difference a year makes. Now co-favourite and the mount of the champion on the back of a runaway victory in a valuable handicap chase at Sandown in the new year followed by a second place behind See More Business at Wincanton and third in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup at Haydock. CHIVES had been runner up in both the Welsh National and AON Chase at Newbury. He had run a blinder in the Gold Cup leading for most of the way before being collared in the closing stages. AD HOC had been going strongly last year when he had been brought down four fences from home leaving connections wondering what might have been. He had been running over hurdles this season until running well to finish third behind Youlneverwalkalone in the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. The very lightly raced KILLUSTY was having just his sixth start over fences (unbeaten in all though apart from losing one in the stewards room) came in for support as did GINGEMBRE, the winner of 2001 Scottish Grand National and he had twice finished runner up in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup (he would later be awarded the 2002 race on technical grounds). GUNNER WELBURN got into the race this year. He has been a very impressive winner of the 2001 Foxhunters but frustratingly missed the cut in this last year and had to make do with a second attempt at the Foxhunters where he finished second. Running now in handicap company he had won at Chepstow and Newbury. Third in the Welsh National. He had an excellent chance now he was finally being allowed to run in the race. Last years winner BINDAREE has been a surprise early faller in the Becher Chase and had not managed a win and was not fancied for a repeat victory. One horse missing out this year was Davids Lad, a former Irish National winner and travelling well when falling four out last year. He found himself controversially disqualified from racing for a period after falling foul of the non-triers rule in Ireland. Harsh.

The Class of 2003
BALLINCLAY KING (1994) b g Asir - Clonroche Artic (Pauper) - Won NH flat race, 3 hurdles and 5 chases between 1999 & 2005. Useful novice chaser landing the Maghull Novices Chase in desperate conditions from future National third Simply Gifted on Grand National day 2001. Didn`t quite build on that promise although he did win a chase at Cheltenham in January 2003. In the National itself he was slowly away and never got into the race pulling up before the Chair. Kept in training until 2005 he later won a chase at Kelso. Ran poorly in two point to points in March 2006.
BEHRAJAN (1995) (IRE) b/br g Arazi - Behera (Mill Reef) - One of my favourites of the decade - won 5 hurdles & 6 chases between 1998 & 2004. Raced twice on the Flat in France before moving to the UK and won three of his first five hurdle races and finished fifth to Barton in the Supreme Novices Hurdle in 1999. Shaped up into a top staying hurdler the following season winning Haydocks Long Distance Hurdle and was third to Bacchanal in the Stayers Hurdle. He then turned his attention to fences winning three novice chases but with the abandonment of the Cheltenham Festival he reverted back to hurdles to finish third behind Baracouda in the re-arranged consolation Stayers Hurdle run at Sandowns Whitbread meeting. In 2001-02 the aim was the Gold Cup and whilst he won the Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby and finished second in both the UK and Irish Hennessy Gold Cups at this stage in his career he was short of championship class. In the Gold Cup itself he jumped poorly and was eventually pulled up. Jumping had often let him down and the following season after a poor display at Navan in the Troytown he was schooled by the legendary Yogi Breisner which clearly had the desired effect as he won the Silver Cup at Ascot and the Pillar Property Chase at Cheltenham. He also did a bit better in the Gold Cup finishing fifth. Thereafter it was all about the National and in 2003 he finished tenth. Aimed for the National again in 2004 after finishing second in the Silver Cup he went to Warwick for their Classic Chase and fell fatally at the second last fence. It was the first time he had ever fallen. A tragic loss.
BURLU (FR) (1994) b g Garde Royale - Acquaillaine (Un Prince) - Won four times at Pau and once at Auteuil when trained by Jean-Pierre Daireux in France. Moved to Martin Pipe for his National attempt but only raced three times in the UK. Pulled up in the Kim Muir at the Festival, fell at second Bechers in the National (breaking rider Gerry Supples leg in the process) and pulled up at halfway in the Betfred Gold Cup.
CARBURY CROSS (IRE) (1994) b g Mandalus - Brickley Gazette (Fine Blade) - Won 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 1998 & 2006. Ran in the "Arkle" colours of Anne Duchess of Westminster. Hit best patch of form in 2001-02 finishing second in the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival and winning a handicap over the Mildmay fences at the National meeting. Pulled up in the Scottish National and was a distant sixth in the At Theraces Gold Cup at Sandown. Completed the course in the 2003 National but unseated early in the Becher Chase later that year. Very lightly raced thereafter and last saw a racecourse at Leicester in February 2006.
CHIVES (IRE) (1995) b g Good Thyne - Chatty Actress (Le Bavard) - Won a NH Flat race, 2 hurdles and 3 chases. What was unusual about his run in the 2003 National ? His jockey Richard Guest was riding for Henrietta Knight but trained two horses in the race himself Red Ark & Red Striker. A conflict of interest ? I have never seen this before or since - was I the only person to notice this ? Chives had put himself into the reckoning for the National after some superb performances in 2002-03. Seventh in a Gold Cup may not sound like much but Chives led for most of the contest and had drawn clear four out before being collared and fading in the closing stages. Runners up spots in the Welsh National and AON (now Denman) Chase at Newbury enhanced his reputation. Sadly in the National his supporters knew their fate early. He was tailed off after just ten fences and was pulled up having burst a blood vessel. He missed most of the following year and changed stables yet in the twilight of his career in 2004 enjoyed his most valuable success when lifting the Tommy Whittle Chase at Haydock. He was not so good thereafter and finished ninth in the 2005 Scottish National. He last was seen pulling up in the 2006 Eider Chase.
CREGG HOUSE (IRE) (1995) ch g King Persian - Loyal River (Over the River) - Won a hurdle and 4 chases between 1999 & 2007. 50-1 and unconsidered in 2003 National he refused late in the race (he had suffered a similar fate in the previous years Irish National). Two years later he returned to Aintree and sprang a 50-1 shock when he landed the Topham Chase. Returned to Aintree twice more and completed the course in the 2005 Becher Chase and the 2006 Topham. Enjoyed a long career last running at Newcastle in February 2007.
DJEDDAH (FR) (1991) b g Shafoun - Union Jack III (Mister Jack) - Won a hurdle and 8 chases between 1996 & 2003. Crack French novice winning three chases at Auteuil in 1996 and won his two first races in the UK, the Feltham Novices Chase at Kempton and Reynoldstown Novices Chase at Ascot. Finished third in the RSA Chase at the 1997 Festival but thereafter showed he was not top class as on his various UK trips he failed to make the frame in Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, King George VI Chase, Martell Cup & Racing Post Chase over the next few seasons. Ran in four Nationals between 2000 & 2003 completing twice in 2000 & 2003. In his native France he was also not quite top class running in five Grand Steeplechase de Paris between 1998 & 2002 (fourth in 1998 was his best placing). Also ran in the 2001 Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Republic (refused early) and the cross country course at Cheltenham later in his career. Bizarrely at the age of thirteen he was sold to compete in point-to-points but he collapsed and died on his debut at Barbury Rings in February 2004. A sad and rather pointless end to this fine chaser.
EMPEREUR RIVER (FR) (1992) b g Riverquest - Nuit des Foyes - French trained raider. Won thirteen times over fences in France. Did well to survive an almighty blunder at the seventeenth fence in the National and pulled up before Bechers having trailed throughout. The National was his only race in the UK. Afterwards he won the Grand Cross Country Steeplechase de Lyon and last raced in August 2004.
FADALKO (FR) (FR) (1993) b g Cadoudal - Kaluste (Calicot) - Won 4 hurdles and 7 chases between 1997 & 2004. Three times winner in France. Won Scottish Champion Hurdle in his first season in the UK in 1999. Three times winner as a novice and ran twice at the 2000 Cheltenham Festival (unseated in the Arkle but gained some compensation with a second place in the Cathcart two days later), His best year was the foot and mouth ravaged season of 2000-01 when he established himself as one of the leading two mile chasers. He won the Melling Chase by sixteen lengths and twice filled the runners up spot at Sandown, in the Tingle Creek and the re-arranged consolation Champion Chase where he just failed by the shortest of short heads to Edredon Bleu in a thriller up the Sandown hill. Not quite so good thereafter although he did manage a win at Cheltenham the following season and finished third in the Melling Chase. 100-1 seemed long odds when he ran in the 2003 National but then he had never run beyond two and a half miles. Never got the opportunity to prove whether or not he stayed the distance as he unseated at first Bechers. Only ran twice more after that with his last race being at Ayr in January 2004.
GINGEMBRE (FR) (1994) ch g Le Nain Jaune - Teuphaine (Barbotan) - Won 6 chases between 1999 & 2005. Winner on the flat in France. Won four times as a novice in 2000 including Future Champion Chase at Ayr and showed his liking for the Scottish track by lifting the 2001 Scottish Grand National. Finished second in 2001 Hennessy Gold Cup and filled the same spot a year later but it is his name on the honours board as first past the post Be My Royal was disqualified on technical grounds. Fancied for the 2003 National but didn`t seem to take to Aintree and pulled up. Off the course thereafter for nearly two years and was not the same horse when he returned pulling up on his last four starts (including 2005 Scottish National)
GOGUENARD (FR) (1994) b g - Gaspard de la Nuit - Laika II (El Tori) - Won 3 hurdles and 8 chases between 1997 & 2003. Six times winner in France. Finished five lengths second in 2001 Topham on only his third start in the UK and that was all the luck he was to enjoy over the National fences. Fell at the first in the 2002 National and later that year unseated at the first in the Becher (the only time a horse has fallen at the first in two events over the National course in the same calender year). Won a valuable handicap at Sandown on Whitbread day 2001 when trained by Nicky Henderson and later won for Sue Smith. Would have won the 2003 Mildmay of Flete at the Festival but he unseated two out when leading. Met his end in the 2003 National. Unseating at the nineteenth fence another horse (Robbo) jumped into him as he was getting to his feet causing fatal injuries.
GOOD SHUIL (1995) - b g (2003) Good Thyne- Shuil Run (Deep Run) - Very average Irish chaser. Won two hurdles but only managed one win over fences in a Beginners Chase at Punchestown in January 2002. 200-1 seemed somewhat generous in the 2003 National where he was making his debut for Charlie Mann. He showed nothing and was pulled up at the nineteenth. Later that year he ran in the Becher Chase - he tailed himself off after the water and pulled up. Was entered in 2004 but it was probably for the best that he was not seen out again. In my opinion the least talented horse to run in the National during the decade.
IRIS BLEU (FR) (1996) ch g Beyssac- Dear Blue (Cyborg) - Won 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 2000 & 2007. Won three times at Auteuil in the spring of 2000. He finished sixth in the 2001 Topham on only his fourth start over fences. He lined up in the 2002 National an unconsidered 100-1 shot having run up a sequence of five successive second places. He didn`t get very far either coming down at the fourth fence. In his next start he finished fifth in the At Theraces Gold Cup at Sandown at odds of 40-1. Jump a year and he is one of the favourites in what was considered to be one of the most open National for years. It was his impressive twenty three length victory in the AGFA Diamond Chase at Sandown that thrust him into the limelight followed by a second to Gold Cup winner See More Business at Wincanton and a third to Shotgun Willy in an ultra-competitive Red Square Vodka Gold Cup at Haydock. Starting 8-1 joint second favourite and the mount of A P McCoy he made a couple of bad mistakes and was pulled up immediately after the second one at the Chair. He looked to be very lame and the dreaded green screens went up around him but fortunately nothing was found to be broken. Off the course until February 2005 he later finished eighth in a Scottish National. There was one more day in the sun when he won the Badger Ales Trophy at Wincanton in November 2005. He last raced in March 2007.
KATARINO (FR) (1995) b g Pistolet Bleu - Katevano (Cadoudal) - Won 5 hurdles and 3 chases between 1998 & 2008. Not many Triumph Hurdle winners end up victorious over the National fences. Originally owned by Daniel Wildenstein in France. Showed little in one race on the flat and three races over jumps at Auteuil in the spring of 1998 (including a three year old chase). Made UK debut for new connections at Newbury in November 1998 winning by ten lengths and four days later followed up with victory over Simply Gifted by a similar distance at Cheltenham. Victory in Kemptons Adonis Hurdle followed and he started favourite for the Triumph which he won in decisive style by an impressive eight lengths. Not many Triumph Hurdlers try to win Irelands top juvenile hurdle but he had a go and managed the double making it five wins from five starts in his juvenile year. Plans to return to France to campaign in Auteuils summer jumps events was shelved although he did make his seasonal debut at the Paris track when he finished runner up in the valuable Prix Renaud de Vivier. Apart from that performance his sophmore season was a disappointment. No more victories and he finished unplaced in both Champion Hurdle and the Aintree Hurdle. Breathing problems then set in and his next two seasons saw him limited to one start over hurdles and then just two over fences (although he won on his chase debut at Newbury in November 2001). He returned to full time training in 2002-03 and after three runs at Cheltenham he lined up in the 2003 National in what was only is seventh appearance over fences. He unseated at the Chair. He had been professionally trained in the UK by Nicky Henderson but his owner Robert Waley-Cohen took over the reins and now it was all about one race, the Aintree Foxhunters. In 2005 having won two point to points he won a thirty runner Foxhunters by one and a half lengths despite nearly coming to grief at the Canal Turn. Off the course again for for twelve months (due to dodgy legs and those infernal breathing problems) he ran in the Foxhunters ...and won it again, this time by seven lengths having been left in front five out. He became the first dual winner since Spartan Missile in the late seventies and in 2007 was the first leg of the most amazing double for his young rider Same Waley-Cohen who was to win the Topham the following day on Liberthine. In 2008 he won a point but a hat-trick of victories in the Foxhunters was thwarted by injury and it was another thirteen months until he saw the racecourse again. In 2009 he ran in his third Foxhunters and in what proved to be his final race he led from the ninth but could not hold off Christy Beamish and was eased close home when beaten. A very impressive career for one so "crocked". Died in June 2017.
KILLUSTY (IRE) (1994) b g Phardante - Lepida (Royal Match) - This one lined up in a Grand National unbeaten over fences and I will go as far as to say I think he is the only one in National history. Won a NH flat race and 3 hurdles and then finished first past the post in four novice chases during 2000-01 (although he subsequently lost the first one on technical grounds). He was then off the course for over two years with tendon problems and won his comeback race at Sandown. So the National was just his sixth start over fences ! Got as far as second Bechers which wasn`t bad really for one so inexperienced although he never really got into the race. Sadly in his next start, the Betfred Gold Cup his fragile legs gave way for a final time and that was it. Just seven starts over fences the least of those featured here.
MAJED (FR) (1996) b g Fijar Tango - Full of Passion (Blushing Groom) - Won 6 hurdles and 2 chases between 1999 & 2007. Won a flat race in France but failed in twenty nine races over jumps. Came to the UK in 2000 and was not out of the first two in eight starts over hurdles winning five times including a valuable handicap at Chepstow. His run ended when he ran poorly and finished in rear in the Pertemps Final at the Festival. Then he ran in the National despite having never jumped a fence in the UK (he had run over fences at Auteuil). Insanity.......madness......or was it ? Well he was trained by a genius who clearly knew far more than we did and he actually got as far as second Bechers - a lot further than many more experienced chasers that day. After Aintree he finished unplaced in the At Theraces Gold Cup. The following year he managed to complete the National course albeit a long way in rear. He was later seen in hunter chases and won a point to point in 2007 . Last raced at Perth in April 2007 but continued between the flags until 2009.
MAXIMIZE (IRE) (1994) b g Mandalus - Lone Run (Kemal) - Won 5 chases between 2000 & 2007. Considered to have each-way prospects in 2003 having finished fourth behind Yollneverwalkalone in the National Hunt Handicap Chase. Prominent in the early stages in the race he was back-peddling when he was one of several casualties at the nineteenth. Ran an absolute stinker when he returned to Aintree later that year in the Becher Chase, tailing off at the water and pulling up shortly afterwards. Didn`t return to Aintree but landed a shock 40-1 victory in the Kim Muir at the 2004 Festival and finished third in that years Scottish National. Later won his first point-to-point in 2006 and last raced at Stratford in April 2007.
MONTIFAULT (FR) (1995) ch g Morespeed - Tade (Kashtan) - Won 2 hurdles and 5 chases between 1998 & 2006. Didn`t win in five starts in his native France but he won on his UK debut at Worcester in November 1999. Won 2001 Badger Beer Chase at Wincanton but pulled up in both Hennessy and Whitbread Gold Cups. Ran the race of his life in 2003 National leading between the tenth and seventeenth fences eventually finishing a well beaten fifth. Clearly connections felt he would be better over one circuit as he returned to Aintree to finish sixth in the 2004 Topham and third in 2005 Foxhunters. Last raced at Ludlow in March 2006. Pulled up in his only point to point in November 2008.
POLAR CHAMP (1993) b g Polar Falcon - Ceramic (Raja Baba) - Won 10 hurdles and 4 chases between 1998 & 2005. Won seven hurdles between May and October 2000 and his first three chases in the summer of 2002. Was still technically a novice when he lined up at Aintree in 2003 but had showed he could stay by finishing second in Cheltenhams four mile chase on New Years day (but had pulled up in the Midlands National). Unseated at the first Canal and showed nothing in handicap company thereafter. He did develop into a smart point-to-pointer though winning nine out of seventeen starts between 2004 & 2006.
RED ARK (1993) ch g Gunner B - Minim (Rymer) - Won 3 hurdles and 7 cases between 1998 & 2004. Won a novice chase at the National Meeting of 2000 and the following year fell in the Topham. In the 2002 National he only got as far as the first fence although completed the course riderless having jumped every fence. Struggled the following year (when he was one of two horses sporting cheek-pieces in a National for the first time) and pulled up. Last raced a Worcester in August 2004.
RED STRIKER (1994) ch g Gunner B - Cover Your Money (Precipice Wood) - Won 5 hurdles and 6 chases between 1999 & 2006. Useful hurdler running up four straight wins in January & February 2000. Won the prestigious Dipper Novices Chase at Newcastle in 2001 and a novice chase in the mud at Aintree in 2001. His best performance came in the Peter Marsh Chase of 2002 when he beat a very competitive field (a record for the race) and dispatched them easily. A National attempt was aborted after two disappointing efforts thereafter and when he did line up in Aintree he was probably past his best and unseated in the closing stages when beaten. Won a hunter chase in February 2006 at Ayr but sadly collapsed and died after crossing the line on his next start at Wetherby the following month.
ROBBO (1994) b g Robellino - Basha (Chiefs Crown) - Won 5 hurdles and 8 chases between 1998 & 2006. Winner on the flat and he continued to run occasionally on the level throughout his career. Quirky individual who often wore headgear and also liked to come from way off the pace. Won his first two hurdles at Ayr and Newcastle and finished eighth in the Triumph Hurdle in 1998. The following year he won twice more over timber but finished a long way down the field in the Coral Cup. Had an inauspicious start to his chasing career as he unseated on his debut but he then won two small races before finishing second in the valuable Dipper Novices Chase at Ayr. Earned the dreaded Timeform "squiggle" as he did not always look genuine but he was a stalwart on the northern circuit in long distance handicaps for several seasons. Finished sixteenth in the 2006 Scottish National and sixth in the Midlands National. At Aintree he was behind when he was hampered and came down at the nineteenth. He also ran in a Becher Chase but was tailing off when he was carried out at Valentines. Last seen out at Wetherby in June 2006.
ROYAL PREDICA (FR) (1994) ch g Tip Moss - Girl Vamp (Kaldoun) - Won a hurdle and 7 chases between 1998 & 2004. Won on his UK debut at Plumpton in January 1999. Not many miles on the clock when he lined up in 2000 and fell at the very first fence. Flopped in the Topham the following year but ran well in 2002 finishing eighth. He will forever have a special place in my heart however for his performance in the 2003 Kim Muir at the Festival. This was his reappearance after a ten and half month lay-off. Tipped in the Racing Post Pricewise and returning home at 33-1 he won by ten lengths having been detached from the field up until the fifteenth fence. For me this was Martin Pipes greatest training performance and was the most lucrative bet I have ever had in my fifty year career following this wonderful sport. Put up another credible performance in the National although he faded badly in the closing stages to finish a distant thirteenth of fourteen finishers. Later that year pulled up in the At theraces Gold Cup and finished unplaced in the Hennessy. Last seen over hurdles at Cheltenham in October 2004 but he finished second in a point in February 2006.
SUPREME GLORY (IRE) (1993) b g Supreme Leader - Pentlows (Sheer Grit) - Won 4 chases between 1999-2007. Unraced over hurdles. Showed he stayed all day by winning a four mile chase at Exeter in 2000 and finished third in the 2001 Scottish National before lifting the 2001 Welsh National. Was amongst the favourites for the 2002 National before a leg injury ruled him out for the season. Campaigned in the highest company on his return he didn`t manage a win so was easy to back when he finally lined up in 2003. Never near the leaders he made up a considerable amount of ground in the closing stages to take second place and hardly got a mention by the commentators for his efforts. Never has a placed horse played so little part in the race. Very lightly raced under rules thereafter although he pulled up in both the Welsh & Scottish Nationals in 2003-04. Later ran without success between the flags in 2006 & 2007.
TORDUFF EXPRESS (IRE) b g Kambalda - Marhabtain (Touching Wood) - Won a hurdle and 10 chases between 1997 & 2005. Won four Irish point-to-points and won on his debut for new connections at Hereford in December 1997 and finished third in the National Hunt Chase at the Festival. Campaigned in handicap company the following year he won the Silver Cup (run then as the Betterware Cup) at Ascots Christmas meeting and finished ninth in the Welsh National. In the National itself in 2000 he was close up when he took a heavy fall at the thirteenth fence. Was a much better hunter chaser (although he did win on his only start over hurdles in October 2000) and in 2001-02 he finished third in the Cheltenham Foxhunters before he was a thirteen length winner over the previous years hero Gunner Welburn in the Aintree Foxhunters. Returned to Aintree in 2003 for the National and again was prominent throughout but he was weakening when his saddle slipped and he unseated Timmy Murphy four from home. He later won the old Horse and Hound Cup at Stratford and last raced at Haydock in February 2005.
YOULNEVERWALKALONE (IRE) (1994) b g Montelimar - In My Time (Levmoss) - Won a NH flat race, 5 hurdles and 4 chases between 1998 & 2003. Won his bumper and his first three hurdles before finishing third when favourite for the 2000 Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Festival. Won three chases in 2002-03 culminating with victories in the Leopardstown Chase and National Hunt Handicap Chase. This was his first success at Cheltenham in six attempts. This victory together with his name that would prove popular with the "red" half of Merseyside saw his odds tumble from 50-1 (when the weights were published) to 8-1 expressing concerns from one bookmaker that he would be "the best-backed horse in Grand National history". Sadly we will never know how good he could have been as he broke down badly on the approach to the twelfth with a broken off- fore cannon bone which required a nine week stay at the Liverpool University Vetinary hospital. He survived but his racing days were over
YOU`RE AGOODUN (1992) ch g Derrylin - Jennie Past (Rymer) - Won 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 1997 & 2006. Won twice over fences at Hereford in the run-up to the 2001 National but then unseated in both the Welsh National and Grand National Trial at Haydock which did not bode well and in the National itself he was baulked in the melee at the first Canal Turn. Not so good in 2002 but did complete the National in seventh place. Still retained ability and later twice won at Ascot. However ran the race of his life when a three-quarter length second to Shotgun Willy in a hotly contested Red Square Vodka Gold Cup at Haydock in February 2003 before he failed to finish in the National. Won a point to point at Tweseldown in January 2005 and was last seen in a hunter chase at Huntingdon in May 2006
2004 - Amberleigh House
The winner
This was a record equalling fourth win for McCain, a staggering twenty seven years after Red Rums third triumph. Whilst Amberleigh House remained in training for another two years age was catching up with him and in the 2005 National he finished tenth without ever troubling the leaders and in what was too be his final race at the age of fourteen he lined up in 2006 and was wisely not given a hard race. He was pulled up when out of contention at the twenty first. Amberleigh House did not run at Aintree until he was nine years old but in a five year period he ran in five Nationals, five Becher Chases and a Topham. He jumped a staggering two hundred and forty five National fences more than any horse since the war, a record he held for fifteen years. A wonderful horse.
Leading Fancies
Another wide open renewal with no less than four co-favourites and six horses separated by only two points in the betting. 2002 winner BINDAREE had been relatively unfancied last year and never looked like retaiing his title after a terrible blunder at first Bechers. This year though he found himself backed down to 10-1 co-favourite on the back of his Welsh National win when he had rivals Hedgehunter and Jurancon behind him. CLAN ROYAL appeared thrown in at the weights with two visits to Aintree and two wins. He had won the Topham Chase last year and on his sole start this season had battled up the home straight to take the Becher Chase by a short head over Amberleigh House. JURANCON II was the choice of the champion, highly tried in his short career which had included a win in a valuable handicap at Uttoxeter in the summer and smashing the course record in Haydock's Red Square Vodka Gold Cup. JOSS NAYLOR was the dark horse in the field and also the most inexperienced. This would be only his sixth race over fences but he had finished second in the Hennessy. DAVIDS LAD a former Irish Grand National winner and was fancied for this in 2002 but he fell when still in contention four fences from home. Controversially ruled out of this last year and to be frank he was not so good now. Perhaps the best Irish challenger was HEDGEHUNTER who had been campaigned in good company this year being placed in both Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup and the Welsh National. Won the valuable Thyestes Chae at Gowran on his last start. SHARDAM came in for support a winner of two chases in the autumn and then highly tried and mostly found wanting until a very impressive second in the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival on his last start. Last years impressive winner MONTYS PASS had only had one start over fences this season when tailed off in the Kerry National at Listowel. Apart from that had been running without distinction over hurdles but as a former winner he had to be respected. WHATS UP BOYS had looked all over the winner of this at the last fence in 2002 but was caught at the elbow by Bindaree. He suffered injuries in a fall in the Charlie Hall Chase the following October and had only had one run since. This would be a tall order now. AMBERLEIGH HOUSE the former Becher Chase winner and was third in this last year staying on strongly. He had put up an excellent performance in defeat behind Clan Royal in the Becher Chase. He clearly loved Aintree and another strong performance was on the cards.

The Class of 2004
AKARUS (1993) b g Labus-Merlis (Amarko) - Only an average chaser in his native France where he won just two chases. Finished second in the 2003 Midlands National on only his third start in the UK. Fell in the 2003 Welsh National when in contention but only got as far as first Bechers in the National when he was hampered. Later that year ran creditably to finish seventh in the Welsh National but was not seen out again after disappointing at Warwick in January 2005.
ALCAPONE (IRE) (1994) b g Roselier - Anns Cap (Cardinal Flower)- Won 4 chases & 2 hurdles between 1999 & 2006. Ran in four consecutive Aintree festivals although he had an inauspicious start when starting the 40-1 outsider in the 2002 Melling Chase he rushed the tapes twice before pulling up in the race itself. After finishing unplaced in a handicap chase in 2004 he lined up in the big one and equipped himself well making most of the early running until he faded on the second circuit. The form book says he pulled up Valentines but if you look at the head on I`d say that this was a refusal. He ran poorly in his final visit in the 2005 Topham. Away from Aintree he was campaigned in the highest company in Ireland and won the Grade 3 Fortria Chase at Navan in 2002. He last raced at Thurles in March 2006
ALEXANDER BANQUET (1993) b g Glacial Storm - Black Nancy (Monksfield) - Won 2 NH flat races, 4 hurdles and 4 chases between 1999 & 2006. Won eight of his first nine starts, the only defeat coming when seventh in the 1999 Supreme Novices Hurdle. Having won his first starts over fences he finished second in the RSA Chase. Injury confined him to just two starts the following season but he finished third in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup and then went down by two lengths to Florida Pearl in the Irish Hennessy. After his absence he continued to be campaigned in top class with the Gold Cup the objective and he laid down his credentials with victory in the Irish Hennessy. He finished sixth in the Gold Cup before his National challenge which ended at first Bechers. Third behind his old adversary Florida Pearl in the Guinness Gold Cup at Punchestown on his next start. He never really hit the same heights again and finished tailed off in Best Mates third Gold Cup in 2004. He fell on his second attempt at the National. A really good horse he was last seen pulling up in the 2006 Irish National.
ARDENT SCOUT (1992) b g Ardross - Violette (Billion) - Won 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 1997 & 2005. Only ran in one National and toiled in the rear throughout but that doesn`t tell all the whole story of this Aintree specialist because come late November he was a fixture over the National fences running in five consecutive Becher Chases between 2000 & 200. He won in 2002 and finished second (2000), third (2003) and fourth (2001). His last race in May 2005 was at Aintree on his only start over the Mildmay course.
ARTIC JACK (FR) (1998) b g Cadoudal - Si Jamais (Arctic Tern) - Won 4 chases and a hurdle. Moved to Sue Smiths in 2003 and won two big chases at Haydock, the Tim Molony and Peter Marsh. Attracted each way support for the National but fell at the first when up with the leaders and he was pulled up in the Irish National on his next start. Managed to complete the course in ninth place in the Becher Chase later that year but showed little thereafter. Won a point to point at Horseheath in 2007 and later raced between the flags in Ireland.
BEAR ON BOARD (IRE) (1995) b g Black Monday - Under the River (Over the River) - Won 1 hurdle and 4 chases between 2000 & 2004. Lightly raced - the National was only his tenth start over fences but he came into the reckoning with a three timer at Haydock, Bangor and Cheltenham where he won the last running of the four mile chase run on New Years day (run that year as the Miles Gosling Chase). At Aintree he attracted each way support, never really got into the race but completed the course in seventh place. On his next start he broke down at Haydock and was retired.
BLOWING WIND (FR) (1993) b/br g Fabulous Dancer - Bassita (Bustino) - Won 3 hurdles and 6 chases between 1997 & 2004. Was still a maiden when he landed a typical Martin Pipe gamble and stormed home by five lengths to win the 1998 Imperial Cup at Sandown. A week later he earnt his owners a cool bonus of £50,000 when he won the County Hurdle at the Festival. Capped a fantastic season by lifting the Scottish Champion Hurdle. Not so effective the following season over timber and was switched to fences. Was A P McCoys choice of ten possible Martin Pipe runners in 2001 and carried the champion passed the finishing post for the first time in six attempts (albeit he had to be remounted after being knocked over by loose horse at the nineteenth). Started favourite a year later on the back of his second Festival win - a superb piece of riding by Ruby Walsh (A P McCoy chose stable companion and favourite Lady Cricket) in the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup who snatched the race off Lady Cricket in the dying strides at mouthwatering odds of 25-1. Gave AP his second consecutive third at Aintree that year but Tom Scudamore was on board in 2003 when, passed his best, he finished a distant eighth. The following season he showed nothing and displayed signs of mulishness when refusing two out at Sandown in his prep race for the National. In his fourth and final National he clearly felt he had done enough as he refused at first Bechers contributing to a pile up at the fence. Another poor display followed at Sandown at the end of the month and that was it.
BOUNCE BACK (USA) (1996) ch g Trempolino - Lattaquie (Fast Topaze) - Won twice on the flat, 2 hurdles and 2 chases. Useful hurdler when trained in France by Francois Doumen finishing third in the 2001 French Champion Hurdle. Doumen also sent him to race in the Aintree Hurdle on Grand National day 2001 when he was a distant fourth behind Barton. Sent to Martin Pipe he was campaigned both over fences and hurdles in this first season in the UK culminating with a surprise win in the At Theraces Gold Cup at Sandown. Lightly raced thereafter he managed only four more races (two Welsh Nationals, a Hennessy and another At Theraces Gold Cup) before starting at 150-1 for the 2004 National. He and his rider got no further than the melee at first Bechers but he lived up to his name by continuing riderless and falling again, not once but twice. Showing no ill-effects he lined up for his third At Theraces Gold Cup at the end of season and finished eleventh. Perhaps wisely Aintree was off the agenda thereafter but he continued racing until March 2006.
BRAMBLEHILL DUKE (IRE) (1992) b g Kambalda - Scat-Cat (Furry Glen) - Won his sole Irish point to point and then won on UK debut. Won novice hurdles and chases but didn`t hit the heights and just scraped into the 2003 National as first reserve. He didn`t get very far either departing at the second fence. A year later and starting at 200-1 he was prominent when he decided to give Bechers a miss and he stopped throwing his young rider James (son of National winning rider Hywel) Davies BEFORE the fence. Goes down in the form book as a refusal and there were to be four more during the rest of his career which ended at Newton Abbot n August 2006.
DAVIDS LAD (IRE) (1994) b g (2002 & 2004) Yshgan - Cool Nora (Lafontaine) - Won 5 hurdles and 7 chases between 1998 & 2005. His astute Irish trainer made several raids to the UK during his younger days which resulted in wins at Perth (1999), Musselburgh (2000) and a chase at Cheltenhams Open meeting in November 2000. His first season over fences was interrupted by the cessation of all Irish racing due to the foot and mouth outbreak but when racing resumed at the end of April 2001 he won four races on the bounce including a two and a half length victory in the Irish Grand National which that year was run on Sunday 6th May instead of its traditional Easter Monday slot. Fancied for the 2002 National (lightly raced but he did finish third in the Cathcart) he was in third pace and going well when he hit the top of the twenty seventh fence and in an instant changed the whole complexity of the race bringing down the equally fancied Ad Hoc who was also travelling strongly. He looked an ideal Aintree horse and connections were hoping for another good showing in 2003 but things didn`t go according to plan. He finished tailed off in his first start at Fairyhouse looking as if something was amiss and in the Grade 2 Fortria Chase at Navan at the end of February he was not given a hard time by Timmy Murphy and plodded round in his own time. Too easy according to the Irish stewards who banned the jockey for seven days, the horse for forty two days and fined the trainer £1,000 for schooling in public. The ban meant no Grand National. Connections went to the Irish High Court to appeal the decision but when judgement was deferred until after the date for the National they had to concede. He ran in the Irish National instead finishing a credible fourth. He did line up in the 2004 National but was remote throughout and eventually finished a very distant tenth of the eleven finishers. In May 2004 his trainer sent him to race in a hurdle race at Kelso which he won for Ruby Walsh who was making a rare visit to the borders course. He looked as if he would do well over the banks course at Punchestown in his latter years and he won on his banks debut when landing the Kildaire Hunt Chase. Turned out two days later for the La Touche he sadly broke a pedal bone and his racing days were over.
EXIT TO WAVE (FR) (1996) ch g Exit to Nowhere - Hereke (Blakeney) - Won 5 hurdles and 3 chases between 1999 & 2005. Won his first five hurdles in France in 1999 including a three timer at Bordeaux. Finished fourth in the Anniversary Hurdle at Aintree on his UK debut. Was quite a useful novice chaser in 2000-01 winning at Ascot and twice at Warwick but never won thereafter. Campaigned in long distance handicaps he pulled up in a Midlands and Scottish National in 2003 and also unseated at the first fence in that years Topham. In the National he was unlucky, hampered at first Bechers his buckle broke and he was forced to pull up after the Canal Turn. Another unsuccessful assault on the Scottish National followed and he only raced two more times. Last seen at Taunton in April 2005.
GUNNER WELBURN (1992) ch g Gunner B - Vedra (Carlingford Castle) - Won 12 chases between 1999 & 2005. Winning pointer for Caroline Bailey for whom he won his first four hunter chases on the trot before losing his unbeaten record when he fell in a valuable hunter chase at the 2000 Punchestown Festival. The following year he went from strength for strength winning the Aintree Foxhunters by twelve lengths in the mud. Considered the best Foxhunters winner since Double Silk and like Double Silk an attempt on the National was mooted. Annoyingly he wasn`t allotted sufficient weight by the handicapper Phil Smith so he couldn`t get into the field and had to make do with a second attempt at the Foxhunters in which he finished second (he filled the same place in the Cheltenham Foxhunters a month earlier). By 2002 he was running in handicap company winning his first handicap at Chesptow and finished third in the Welsh National. In the 2003 National he was a first National runner for Andrew Balding and led from the thirteenth to the second last (despite a blunder at the Chair). He didn`t quite the see the trip home and finished third. In 2003-04 he won his biggest race when he won the Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby and also lifted the Royal Artillery Gold Cup at Sandown. In the 2004 National he weakened rapidly on the second circuit and was pulled up having been prominent early. He enjoyed one final day in the sun when he won a small race at Bangor on his last racecourse appearance in April 2005.
JOSS NAYLOR (IRE) (1995) b g Be My Native - Sister Ida (Bustino) - Only raced 15 times under rules winning 2 NH flat races, 2 hurdles and 3 chases between 2000 & 2004. Despite being a novice he skipped the more obvious novice hurdle events in 2002 and ran instead in the Coral Cup where he put in a stunning performance to finish second. Won his first three novice chases and went to the Cheltenham festival where for a second year he by-passed the more obvious novice chases and instead ran in the William Hill Trophy against seasoned handicappers. This time the gamble didn`t pay off and he was unplaced behind Youllneverwalkalone. Only raced two more times, second in the Hennessy Gold Cup behind Strong Flow and the National where he was one of four 10-1 co-favourites. Seemed to hate the experience and was tailed off at half way before pulling up. Never raced again and I have no idea why as I am not aware he sustained any injury. His owner Darren Mercer was "warned off" for six months in July 2004 as a result of laying the horse to lose the Welsh National, a race in which he knew he was not going to run. Maybe the "retirement" was linked.
JURANCON II (FR) (1997) b g Scooter Bleu - Volniste (Olmeto) - Won 3 hurdles and 3 chases between 2001 & 2007. Won on his debut over fences at Uttoxeter in December 2002 and on his second start put in an impressive performance for one so inexperienced when finishing third in the Midlands National (and he would have been closer had he not made a mistake three out). Clearly liked the Shropshire track as he won the valuable Summer National (beating Spot Thedifference) in what was only his third start over the larger obstacles. Despite this early success he was an unconsidered 40-1 shot when finishing fifth in the 2003 Welsh National. Won Haydocks recognised National trial (run that year as the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup) on unseasonably firmish ground and knocked eighteen seconds off the course record that had stood since 1975. Partnered that day by a five pound claimer Joey Elliott but it was A P McCoy who took the ride at Aintree for which he started 10-1 co-favourite. McCoys wretched Aintree luck continued in what was his final National ride for Martin Pipe and the pair fell at the fourth fence. Showed nothing the following season (last in the Welsh National and pulled up in Midlands National and Betfred Gold Cup). Missed 2005-06 season and showed nothing in four starts in 2007. Last raced at Ayr in March 2007.
KINGSMARK (IRE) (1993) gr g Roselier - Gaye le Moss (Le Moss) - Won 4 hurdles and 8 chases between 1998 & 2004. Won his first four hurdles in 1998-99 but flopped in the Coral Cup at the Festival (he was still a novice). Won a handicap at the 2001 National meeting and excelled at Haydock winning the Edward Hanmer Memorial Chase (a forerunner of the Betfair Chase and a race with a rich history) three times times between 2000 and 2002. Not quite top class as he never featured in the Hennessy nor the Whitbread in 2000-01. At Aintree he ran well in the 2002 National to sneak a place without ever really troubling the leaders. He had to miss 2003 at the last minute due to injury and in 2004 he was totally outpaced but completed the course a distant ninth. Incidentally in doing so he provided National winning jockey Mick Fitzgerald with only his second completion (and his last as it turned out from a total of thirteen rides)
LUZCADOU (FR) (1993) b g Cadoudal - Luzenia (Armos) - Won 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 1996 & 2005. Won twice at Auteuil in his native France. Won on his UK debut at Carlisle in December 1997. Prone to making mistakes but he completed the course in the 2002 Topham and in the inaugural (new look) Grand Sefton in 2003. His National experience was brief - he fell at the very first fence. After that failure he turned his attentions to cross country chases running three times over the Punchestown Banks, four times over the Cheltenham cross country course and he also ran in the 2004 & 2005 Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Republic. He refused at the same fence (known as the Big English Jump, six fences from home) both times.
MANTLES PRINCE (1994) ch g Emerati - Miami Mouse (Miami Spring) - Won 5 hurdles and 2 chases between 1998 & 2005. Very useful Irish hurdler between 1999 and 2000 winning Grade 1 Ladbroke Hurdle at Leopardstown and finished second in the Aintree Hurdle on Grand National day. Chased home two Irish greats the following season finishing second behind Istabraq in the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle and third behind Moscow Flyer in the Shell Champion Hurdle. Not so good over fences with just two wins to his name in 2002. Sold to a syndicate headed by former England footballing (and Question of Sport) legend Emlyn Hughes and now trained in the UK he went straight to the National in 2003 without a prep race. He ran well for one so inexperienced before unseating at second Valentines. Lined up a year later without a prep race over fences (he instead raced over the all-weather at Wolverhampton). A terrible mistake at the fourteenth nearly floored him and he was pulled up after the water. Never raced over fences again but ran nine times over hurdles mostly in selling/claiming company winning at Huntingdon in May 2005.
MONTREAL (1997) b/br g Chamberlin - Massada I (Kashta) - Won 3 hurdles and 5 chases between 2000 & 2008. Was a pretty useful handicap hurdler in 2001-02 winning at Ascot and Sandown and finished third in the Pertemps Final at the Festival. Fourth in the 2003 Kim Muir but a year later in what was his prep race for the National he was pulled up early having been hampered. Fell at Bechers in the National itself. Showed he had suffered no ill-effects by winning three chases on the bounce (two at Bangor and one at Perth) in May/June. Didn`t win again. Last raced at Sedgefield in April 2008. Was a vey moderate pointer only making the frame once in twenty one starts between 2007 & 2009.
ROYAL ATALZA (FR) (1997) gr g Saint Preuil - Crystalza (Crystal Palace) - Won 2 hurdles and 2 chases between 1999 & 2005. All his wins over fences came at Auteuil before he moved to the UK. Finished tailed off in his first start at Ascot but then unusually had two spins over the all-weather before his assault on the National winning at Wolverhampton. Despite his lack of experience he ran credibly in the National but failed to see the trip home and was pulled up in the latter stages. Returned to Aintree twice more finishing sixth in the 2004 Becher Chase but ran no sort of race in the 2005 Topham, unseating at the Canal Turn when tailed off. Despite the fact he was only eight that was the end of his career over the sticks although he ran eight more times on the all-weather last being seen out at Wolverhampton in November 2005. Lightly raced thereafter in points between 2007 & 2009 he won his final one at Marks Tey.
SHARDAM (1997) b g Shardari - Knocked Hill (Buckskin) - Won a hurdle and 5 chases between 2001 & 2006. Highly tried during his National year pulling up in the Hennessy, finishing unplaced in the AON Chase and fourth in the Racing Post Chase before putting up his best display chasing home Fork Lightning in the William Hill Trophy at the Festival. Unseated early in the 2004 National and played his part in the pile up at first Bechers by swerving into the path of Bramblehill Duke and Blowing Wind before the fence. Finished thirteenth in the Betfred Gold Cup and later that same year pulled up in the Welsh National. Later in his career he did win a small race at Ludlow in November 2006 but pulled up lame as the Shropshire track eleven days later and was retired.
SKYCAB (IRE) (1992) b g Montelimar - Sams Money (Pry) - Won 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 1997 & 2005. Highlight of his career which was mostly plied out of the limelight in handicaps on the southern circuit was victory in a supporting race on Betfred Gold Cup day at Sandown in 2003. He won twice at the Surrey track and also won twice at Fakenham and Stratford. Started at odds of 200-1 in 2004 National and came down at the melee at first Bechers. He last raced at Huntingdon in March 2005.
SMARTY (IRE) (1993) b/br g Royal Fountain - Cahernane Girl (Bargello) - Won a hurdle and 5 chases between 1997 & 2005. Showed very little over hurdles but was a fairly useful novice chaser winning four times but after landing his first race in his second season (at Leicester) he never won over the larger obstacles again. Never mind he will always be remembered for his performance in 2001 National where he and eventual winner Red Marauder ran down to second Bechers in splendid isolation with only the riderless Beau for company and the pair did their best impression of Tipperary Tim and Billy Barton as they strolled home together. Ultimately he simply couldn`t keep up with Red Marauder and he finished a distance behind in second place. Never enjoyed the same luck again in the National as he was so badly hampered a year later at the first fence that his blinkers were knocked off and he had to be pulled up. He was eliminated in 2003 but did return in 2004 and finished a distant sixth. He boasted an impressive record in the Becher Chase finishing second in 2001, fifth in 2002 and third in 2004. He last raced over Cheltenhams cross country chase at the Festival in 2005.
SOUTHERN STAR (IRE) (1995) ch g Montelimar - Flying Pegasus (Beau Chapeau) - Won a NH Flat race (beating future national winner Bindaree), 2 hurdles and 3 chases between 1999 & 2004. Won his first two chases and then pulled up in the 2002 RSA Chase at the Festival before chasing home the wonderful Barton in the Mildmay Novices Chase at the Aintree Festival. Campaigned in top company the following year but ran unplaced in the Hennessy, Red Square Vodka Gold Cup at Haydock and the National Hunt Handicap Chase. Completed the course but showed little aptitude for the Aintree fences in 2003 National finishing last of the fourteen finishers. Was surprised to see him return the following year although he did so on the back of some smart performances in long distance chases and he had won the Warwick Classic Chase beating eventual National co-favourite Jurancon II. Clearly didn`t like Aintree as he put up another lacklustre display and was pulled up soon after half way. For whatever reason this was his last race.
TAKAGI (IRE) (1995) b g Husyan - Ballyclough Gale (Strong Gale) - Won a NH flat race a hurdle and 5 chases between 1999 & 2005. Useful Irish chaser who won the valuable Troytown Chase in 2002 and the Bobbyjo Chase in 2004. Unplaced in two Irish Grand Nationals (2003 & 2005). Unseated at the Chair in the 2004 National which was his only visit to the UK. Later ran over the banks course at Punchestown. Suffered fatal injuries after landing awkwardly over the big water jump in the Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Republic in October 2005.
THE BUNNY BOILER (1994) b g Tremblant - Dannys Charm (Arapahos) - Won NH flat race, 3 hurdles & 3 chases between 1999 & 2006. First visited Aintree in 2000 when finishing unplaced in the Sefton Novices Hurdle. Completed a rare National double in 2002 when winning the Midlands National (by twenty five lengths) and the Irish Grand National despite a bad blunder at the last fence. Failed to make it three Nationals in a row as he pulled up in the Welsh equivalent. Ran brilliantly in 2003 National but unfortunately had already unseated rider at the very first fence and then put in a foot perfect performance when riderless. In fact he fared much better without a jockey than with one as he toiled in a distant tenth out of eleven finishers the following year. Thereafter raced mostly in Irish point-to-points (won two in 2006) although he did return once to the professional ranks finishing unplaced in the 2005 Irish Grand National
WHATS UP BOYS (1994) gr g Supreme Leader - Magnolia Brick (Molocante) - Won NH flat, 4 hurdles and 4 chases between 1998 & 2004. Useful hurdler wining 2000 Coral Cup at the Festival (flew at the finish) but even better chaser with a distance victory in the mud over the useful Shotgun Willy in the 2001 Mildmay Novices Chase and later that year landed the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. At Cheltenham and Newbury he provided career highlights for Paul Flynn who never rode in a National and missed his only opportunity in 2001 (when he did not answer his phone to the connections of Esprit de Cotte who were looking for a last minute replacement for the injured Mick Fitzgerald). He was ridden by Richard Johnson for both his National attempts and he came so close to becoming the first grey to win a National for over thirty years when he was collared on the elbow by Bindaree. On his next start at Wetherby he sustained injuries in a fall and although he returned to the racecourse a year later he was not the same horse and he was brought down at Bechers in 2004. He last raced at Cheltenham in November 2004.
WONDER WEASEL (1993) b g Lancastrian - The She Weasel (Gulf Pearl) - Won 5 chases between 2000 & 2007. Unraced over hurdles he won five of his first eight starts over fences but didn`t live up to that early promise. Fell early in his first National and pulled up late in his second (at odds of 200-1). Ran a good race to finish fourth in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup in 2003 (behind Shotgun Willy in a very competitive field). Ran in fourteen points without getting his head in front between 2005 & 2007 and was only seen out once under rules some three years later when pulling up at the Folkestone United Hunts meeting in May 2007.
2005 - Hedgehunter
The winner
Hedgehunter had the honour of being the last National winner to be led into the old covered winners enclosure. He never won again and to be honest being burdened with top weight of eleven stone twelve he was never going to win back to back Nationals especially with the rain softened ground underfoot in 2006. He ran magnificently in defeat. Prior to that he had finished second in the Cheltenham Gold Cup to War of Attrition, a superb performance even if it was by modern day standards a weak renewal. He was lightly raced thereafter but still ran in two more Nationals finishing ninth in 2007 and thirteenth in 2008 in what was to be his final race. His performance in the Gold Cup made him achieve the highest rating of a National winner for the decade and he also has the honour of being my favourite National runner of the noughties
Leading Fancies
With rather poor planning Prince Charles got married to Camilla Parker Bowles (who's ex-husband Andrew had competed in the 1969 National) on Grand National day. Having said that Grand National day is not a bad day to get wed and I have been to three weddings on National day and always make a point of asking the father of the bride and best man not to make mention of the winner in their speeches (always gets strange looks to that request as none of those I asked had any intention of doing so but it is best to be careful). The Queen I am told did not play ball and announced the winner during the festivities (good job I wasn't invited). TV scheduling with the wedding meant that the race was put back half an hour to 16:10 (a ridiculously late start I thought at the time). HEDGEHUNTER had blazed the trail last year but the tank was emptying when he took a tired and heavy fall at the last fence. Running mostly over hurdles this season he had won the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse last time and another big run was expected. If he stood up this was the one they all had to beat. FOREST GUNNER had been a runaway winner of last years Foxhunters Chase and made it an Aintree double when taking the Grand Sefton in November. He had followed that with a win in the National Trial at Haydock. With the trainers wife in the saddle (who had turned professional for the race) they remained very fancied despite some misguided misgivings in certain circles over the choice of rider. Dual course winner CLAN ROYAL had been undoubtably unlucky last year (when his rider lost his whip and he veered off a straight line in the closing stages). He had only one start this season over hurdles in December as all eyes were on the National. He was the choice of the champ and had obvious claims. Scottish challenger STRONG RESOLVE, a four times winner at Ayr and runner up in the Welsh National seemed the best hope from Scotland for some years. AMBERLEIGH HOUSE of course boasted the most impressive record at Aintree with a National and Becher Chase under his belt as well as finishing runner up and third in both races as well. Not so good elsewhere but there was a real chance of him putting up another solid performance even though he was getting on in years. French trained INNOX was a frequent visitor to the UK and had won a competitive handicap at Sandown on his last start. NIL DESPERANDUM was an interesting runner from Ireland, a Grade One winner as a novice he had won at Down Royal on his last start but had finished behind Hedgehunter in the Bobbyjo Chase. JOLY BEY had changed hands for 240,000 guineas in 2003 as a present for his amateur rider. He had started favourite for last years Topham and was going well when he fell four from home. He won at Sandown at February but had to be pulled up at the Festival when he was hampered and his saddle slipped. As well as Amberleigh House there were two other former winners in the field both starting at 33-1 which seemed a fair reflection of their respective chances. BINDAREE had been hampered and fell in the melee at first Bechers last year and had shown little in two starts this season whilst MONTYS PASS had not shown a great deal since his win in 2003 (although he had run credibly to finish a distant fourth last year).

The Class of 2005
AD HOC (IRE) (1994) b g Strong Gale - Knockarctic (Quayside) - Won a hurdle and 5 chases between 1999 & 2005. Probably the best horse of the decade to never complete the course in the National as each of his three attempts ended on the floor. Won his first three starts over fences culminating in a novice event on Scottish Grand National day at Ayr in 2000. He then failed to finish in his next three starts before ending his second season on a high note with a five length second behind Gingembre in the Scottish National followed by victory in what was to be the final running of the Whitbread Gold Cup. From then on the National was the target and his campaigns for the following two years were tailor made for an assault on Aintree. He raced just three times before the 2002 National finishing third in the William Hill Trophy at the Festival and a year later to preserve his handicap mark he ran mostly over hurdles (winning a novice hurdle, his sole success over timber on the way) before a second third place in the William Hill Trophy. Both trips to Aintree though ended in disappointment. In 2002 he was cruising with Paul Carberry when he was brought down four out by the equally fancied Davids Lad (Carberry was convinced they would have won) whist in 2003 he was riding a waiting race when he misjudged the nineteenth (too far out to say how he would have done had he stood up). After this second disappointment he won what was now called the Atthe races Gold Cup at Sandown. In 2001 he had slogged home on heavy ground but this year he put in an equally impressive performance on good going. Unfortunately the following year when being aimed at his third National he was injured in February and had to miss the race and when he lined up in 2005 he was clearly passed his best and was in rear when he fell at second Bechers. A deserved retirement beckoned.
ARCTIC COPPER (1994) b g Montelimar - MIss Penguin (General Assembly) - Tough cookie who started 200-1 in the 2005 National and finished well down the field. However thereafter he raced in Irish point-to-points and was a revelation winning eighteeen out of thirty three starts between the flags in four years.
ASTONVILLE (FR) (1994) b g Top Ville - Astonishing (Vacilante) - Won 2 hurdles and 2 chases between 2000 & 2008. One time useful chaser/hurdler in France winning three times at Auteuil and once at Enghein. Bought by the Wilson family at the end of 2004. The Wilsons liked to have runners in the championship races (usually French imports with a semblance of form) all with no chance and stating at ridiculously long odds so it was perhaps not that surprising to see this one line up in the Champion Hurdle at odds of 500-1 (having finished tailed off in two hurdles and pulled up in the Racing Post Chase beforehand). He finished tailed off and three days later pitched up at similar odds in the Gold Cup. He got around but again miles behind the others. There were some who said that horses of his calibre had no right to line up in such races but the Wilsons paid the fees so why not have a bit of fun ? So he lined up in the National where he actually performed surprisingly well. Up with the leaders on the first circuit his rider suddenly found the horse lose his action after crossing the Anchor bridge. Wisely rider Barry Crowley immediately pulled up and dismounted only to find that the horse was perfectly sound. He changed stables and returned to France to run in their premier race the Gand Steeplechase de Paris where he fell when tailed off. He returned to Cheltenham in 2006 for another tilt at the Champion Hurdle, again he started at 500-1 and finished tailed off although like the previous year he did beat another runner home. He was sold soon after and ended his career running in points and he won one in 2007 in bizarre circumstances (well held fourth when the leader fell at the last and the second and third were both hampered and unseated - the date ? 1st April). Last seen under rules in a hunter chase at Folkestone in February 2008.
BALLYBOUGH RASHER (1995) b g Broken Hearted - Chat her Up (Proverb) - Won 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 2000 & 2007. Won two chases over the Mildmay course in October 2001 and November 2002. Caused a major upset when landing the 2003 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby at odds of 40-1 beating the wonderful Marlborough by six lengths. Lightly raced thereafter and he was unconsidered when he lined up in the 2005 National (refusing second Bechers when behind). Only raced three times thereafter pulling up each time. Last raced at Wincanton in January 2007.
BINDAREE (IRE) (1994) ch g Roselier - Flowing Tide (Main Reef) - Won 4 hurdles and 5 chases between 1999 & 2005. When he landed the Welsh National in December 2003 (beating Sir Rembrant by half a length) he became only the fourth horse since the war to win both the Chepstow classic and the Grand National. His Aintree victory was something of a surprise as he was relatively unconsidered at 25-1 and stable jockey Carl Llewellyn who was to partner him all his races bar this one opted for his more fancied stable companion Beau. Jamie Goldstein was waiting in the wings to take the ride but he broke his leg in the week leading up to the race at Ludlow so Gold Cup winning jockey Jim Culloty stepped in. Llewellyn and Beau came down at the fourteenth and then proceeded to give his stable mate a good run for his money whilst riderless. Bindaree was amongst the leader by the Chair and took the lead at second Bechers. With the leaders from then on but by the last he was two lengths behind Whats Up Boys. Poised to challenge on the outside the grey veered right, Culloty switched course and dramatically overhauled the grey yards from the line to win decisively by one and a quarter lengths. He recorded the fastest time of the decade. Whilst he was only a second season chaser he had been highly tried in his first season over fences (he won four novice hurdles in a row and had finished fourth in the 2000 Royal & Sun Alliance Novice Hurdle at the Festival) winning three times and had shown his liking for the National fences with an encouraging fourth in the mud in the 2001 Topham. He hadn`t managed to win in the 2001-02 season before Aintree and had been some way behind Whats Up Boys in the Hennessy. He was also beaten in the Welsh National and had finished seventh in the National Hunt Handicap Chase hence his relatively long odds. Apart from his National win he had no luck in five other visits to Aintree. He was a surprise early faller in the Becher Chase in 2002 and fell at Valentines when travelling strongly in 2003. In the National he never troubled the leaders again. In 2003 he made a terrible mistake at first Bechers when he was down on his belly and whilst he made up ground past tired horses he finished a never dangerous sixth. He got home in his own time in 2005 and in 2004 he was unlucky to be hampered at first Bechers and Llewellyn had no chance. Apart from his Welsh National win he showed little thereafter but he did finish second twice in the Rehearsal Chase when it was still run at Chepstow. He last raced in the 2005 Becher Chase where he finished for the first time albeit a distant eighth. Connections were eyeing another tilt at the National but afterwards he was found to have damaged a hind leg so the decision was taken to retire him.
DOUBLE HONOUR (FR) (1998) gr g (2005) Highest Honour - Silver Cobra (Silver Hawk) - Won 3 hurdles and 5 chases between 2003 & 2006. Boasts the best flat form of all those listed here. Won six races on the level including victory in a listed race at Hamburg in Germany. Finished third in the 2002 Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot and ran in the race in both 2003 and 2004. Over timber he won his first two races and finished tenth in the 2003 Sun Alliance Hurdle. Pretty useful novice chaser as well finishing third in the 2004 Mildmay Novices Chase at the Aintree festival. Made debut over National fences in 2004 Becher Chase finishing fourth. Held solid each way claims in the 2005 National having finished second behind Forest Gunner in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup at Haydock. At Aintree he was close up when he unseated at the twenty first. A week later he finished a credible fourth in the Scottish National. The following season he fell at Bechers in the Becher Chase and then won his most valuable race over the jumps, the Tim Molony Chase at Haydock. That victory was hard fought and it must have taken its toil as thereafter his form under rules deserted him and he finished a distant last in the Scottish National. His last race saw him finishing tailed off in a hurdle at Haydock in May 2006. His career under rules was over at the tender age of eight but he later was a successful pointer wining seven of his twenty starts between the flags between 2006 & 2010.
EUROPA (1996) b g Jupiter Island - Dublin Ferry (Celtic Cone) - Won 2 NH flat races, 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 2000 & 2006. Never quite reproduced his initial promise which saw him win six out of his first ten starts under rules. He was unfancied at 150-1 on the back of being brought down in his previous race, the Mildmay of Flete at the Festival (the second time he had landed up on the floor in the race). and was never a factor finishing amongst the backmarkers. Retained some ability and despite not winning the following season he finished placed in a valuable handicap at Newbury and was second in the Great Yorkshire Chase (run that year at Southwell). Sold for 33,000 guineas at the end of the season presumably to run in points but he only managed two.
FOLY PLEASANT (FR) (1994) ch g Vaguely Pleasant - Jeffologie (Jefferson) - Won five times at Pau in his native France. Specialised in finishing second in big races (Thomas Pink Gold Cup 01, Tripleprint Gold Cup 02, Pillar Property Chase 03). Was also second in the Christies Foxhunters, his race before Aintree. Never returned after his National exertions but he stayed in training until 2008 winning hunter chases at Warwick (Feb 06) and Ludlow (March 07) and his only point-to-point.
FONDMORT (FR) (1996) b g Cyborg - Hansie (Sukawa) - Won 2 hurdles and 7 chases between 1999 & 2006. Extremely popular horse who made Cheltenham his own with a series of gutsy performances both in victory and defeat. Won a small race at Auteuil and won on his UK debut, a novice hurdle at Kempton on Boxing day 2000. He also won on his chasing debut at Kempton before adding the valuable Henry VII Novices Chase at Sandown and a novice chase at Kemptons Christmas meeting. Thereafter all his wins came at Cheltenham although he was no match for Moscow Flyer in the 2002 Arkle and he was also well beaten in the Maghull Novices Chase on Grand National day. He won the Tripleprint Gold Cup in 2002 and finished second in the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup at the Festival. The following season he won the Paddy Power Gold Cup at the Open meeting and also finished placed in what was the last running of the Mildmay of Flete. In 2005 he ran his heart out in defeat when he was just touched off in the inaugural Daily Telegraph Chase at the Festival which was his final race before his lone assault on the National. Held up on the first circuit he was making steady progress on the run down to Bechers but he was hampered at the brook and steadily lost his place before pulling up in the closing stages. When he returned to Aintree a year later it was in the calmer waters of the Melling Chase but he ran surprisingly badly and pulled up. He enjoyed his most emotional success when appearing at the Festival for the fifth consecutive year when he finally won a race, the Ryanair Chase. In a clear lead at the last he weakened in the closing stages but he just held on to beat future Bet 365 Gold Cup winner Lacdoudal by one and a quarter lengths. It was his penultimate start. In November 2006 he fractured his pelvis on the gallops and a subsequent haemorrage meant that it was touch and go whether he would survive. Thankfully he did and he was one of the star attractions at the Lambourn Open Day the following April.
FRENCHMAN`S CREEK (1994) b g Emperor Fountain - Hollow Creek (Tarquogan) - Won a hurdle and 3 chases between 1999 & 2005. Won 2002 National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival and finished third to Bounce Back in the At theraces Gold Cup at Sandown. Reportedly strained a tendon and was off the course for two and a half years. Not so good when returned, pulled up in the 2004 Hennessy and then raced three times without success at Cheltenham. Unseated at the very first fence at Aintree, suffered a leg injury and was retired.
GLENELLY GALE (IRE) (1994) b/br g Strong Gale - Smart Fashion (Carlsburg) - Won 1 hurdle and 5 chases between 1999-2005. Trained for most of his career by Arthur Moore in Ireland, the highlight being victory in the valuable James Nicholson Champion Chase at Down Royal in 2003. The National was his last start for Moore and he made a lot of the early running before running out of puff and pulling up three fences from home. Didn`t race much thereafter and ended up running in point-to-points where he was successful once in sixteen starts between 2007 & 2009.
JAKARI (FR) (1997) b g Appeldoorn - Tartifume II (Mistigri) - Won a hurdle and 5 chases between 2001 & 2006. Useful chaser at best winning three times during the 2003-04 season (at Ascot, Cheltenham and Ayr). Just had two starts before the 2005 National and ran well to finish just six lengths behind Kelami in fifth place in the National Hunt Handicap Chase. Didn`t appear to like Aintree and pulled up before the nineteenth fence. Didn`t achieve much afterwards and last raced under rules at Uttoxeter in May 2006. Showed some ability between the flags winning three times and making the frame on five other occasions in 2007 & 2008.
JOLY BEY (FR) (1997) - b g Beyssac - Rivolie (Mistigri) (2005) - A winner at Auteuil for Guillaume Macaire he later won three times for Paul Nicholls before being sold for the ridiculously high sum of 240,000 guineas at the May Doncaster sales in 2003. He was to be a present for the rather posh (but talented) amateur rider David Dunsdon who rode him in most of his races thereafter. Clearly considered to possess considerable talent he started favourite for the 2004 Topham, and was looking all over the winner when he fell four from home. The National was the target for 2005. He won at Sandown in February disaster struck in their prep race, the William Hill Handicap Chase at the Festival. Hampered at the twelfth fence, the saddle slipped and he had to be pulled up a few fences later. He ran well for a while in the National but ran wide at the second Canal Turn and weakened to finish fifteenth, clearly not staying the trip. He was entered again in 2006 but having suffered breathing problems during his second race at Wincanton he underwent an operation. Unfortunately it was clearly not a success as he was not able to run again.
L`AVENTURE (FR) (1999) b m Cyborg - Amphitrite (Lazer) (2005) - Won 4 hurdles and 5 chases between 2003 & 2010. Ran in one National and was never going well finishing only fifteenth and never returned to Aintree. HOWEVER she was still something of a "National" specialist. Ran in three Scottish Nationals (2006, 2007 & 2009), ran in four consecutive Welsh Nationals (2004-07) winning by a distance in 2005 and five Midlands Nationals between 2005 & 2010 (only missed 2009) finishing second (to Synchronised in 2010 in what was her last racecourse appearance), third and fourth twice. Amazingly she completed the course every time. She also won the Scottish Borders National at Kelso in 2009. A phenomenal mare. Later produced two foals to Kayf Tara.
LE COUDRAY (FR) (1994) b g Phantom Breeze - Mos Lie (Tip Moss) - Won 8 hurdles and 3 chases between 1997 & 2005. Very good chaser and an even better hurdler. In France won their top four year old hurdle, the Prix Renaud Vivier at Auteuil. Slammed Irish wonder-horse Limestone Lad at Naas on his Irish debut in January 1999 and beat him again at Navan later that year and finished second in the 1999 Stayers Hurdle. Off the course for just under three years he fell on his debut over fences but then won his next three races including Grade 1 novice events at Fairyhouse and Leopardstown. Very highly tried in 2003-04 and although he didn`t win he finished second behind Best Mate in the Ericsson Chase and was second to Florida Pearl in the Irish Hennessy. Not entered in the Cheltenham Gold Cup he ran instead in the National and was going well until he fell at second Bechers. Not so good thereafter and was pulled up in both Irish Grand National and a second National (tailed off at half way). Last seen out winning a handicap hurdle at Leopardstowns Christmas festival in 2005.
LORD ATTERBURY (1996) ch g Mister Lord - Tammyiris (Arapahos) - Won 3 chases between 2003 & 2006. Showed little in Irish point-to-points but was transformed when sent to David Pipes "feeder" yard. The younger Pipe cut his teeth training point-to-pointers and this was the one who put him on the map. He started in 2003 winning two points and maiden hunter chase at Leicester by twenty eight lengths. He then announced himself to he world when he lined up in the Aintree evening meeting in May and won again by a distance. Looking the most exciting hunter prospect for years he was snapped up by Martin Pipes leading owner David Johnson. The following year his preparation was beset with problems but David Pipe did manage to get him to win another point. Transferred to Martin Pipes yard he started favourite for the Christies Foxhunters Chase but raced lifelessly and was pulled up. After such a dire performance it was surprising to see him take his chance in the National especially as he had only run four times under rules. However, Pipe was a wily old fox and clearly knew something we didn`t because to put it bluntly he was a revelation. Always with the leaders he was one of three horses who drew clear after second Bechers and he was still with a fighting chance at the last but he couldn`t quite last home and eventually finished an exhausted third beaten five lengths. He required oxygen after the race and was not asked to enter the winners enclosure. I think it is fair to say that the run took a lot out if him and he was not the same horse afterwards. He did put up a much better performance in the 2005 Christies Foxhunters finishing fourth but was a surprise first fence faller when he returned to Aintree for the 2005 National. He narrowly missed the cut and ended up as first reserve in 2006. He ran in that years Scottish National instead but was pulled up. That was his last race under rules although he did continue to run in point-to-points but failed to reproduce the dazzling form he had shown in his younger days. He failed to win in 9 starts between 2007 & 2009.
MERCHANTS FRIEND (IRE) (1995) b g Lord Americo - Buck maid (Buckskin) - Won 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 1999 & 2009. Won twice in Ireland before being sold to run for Charlie Mann and unusually made his debut for new connections in a hurdle event in the Czech Republic in October 2002. In desperately heavy going he slammed the best the Czechs had to offer by a distance. Thereafter won his first two starts over fences in the UK. Finished fifth in the 2003 Hennessy and second in the 2004 Kim Muir. Fell at the tenth in the 2005 National and was one of the two riderless horses who carried out Clan Royal at second Bechers. Thereafter finished unplaced in the Betfred Gold Cup at Sandown. Didn`t achieve a great deal thereafter and was last seen in a Cheltenham Hunter Chase in 2009.
MONTY`S PASS (IRE) (1993) b g Montelimar - Friars Pass (Monksfield) - Won 8 chases between 1999 & 2005. Raced in points and hunter chases early in his career and first came to prominence when he was a fast finishing fifth in the 2002 Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup. In his next race he showed a liking for the unique Aintree fences chasing home the ill-fated Its Time for A Win in the Topham. In the autumn of 2002 he gained his first major win when he landed the valuable Guiness Kerry National over three miles at Listowel. A couple of spins over hurdles followed before he lined up in 2003. Always with the leaders, he jumped superbly, took the lead two out and was driven out to win by an easy twelve lengths. In doing so he netted his owners a cool million pounds. He was syndicate owned and the syndicate leader Mike Futter was a little publicity shy and a reluctant interviewee so the celebrations afterwards seemed a little muted when compared to previous Irish winners. The rest of his career is described above.
NATIVE EMPEROR (1996) br g Be My Native - Finians Blue (Crash Course) - Won 6 hurdles and 2 chases between 2000 & 2006. Won on his debut over hurdles at Stratford in October 2000 and also won at Ascot during his novice campaign. Developed into a smart handicap hurdler the following season winning three times and finishing fourth in the Pertemps Final at the Festival. Placed in both the Newburys Long Distance Hurdle and Ascots Long Walk Hurdle in the autumn of 2002 but he was completely outclassed in the Stayers Hurdle and was pulled up. As a novice chaser he landed the National Hunt Chase at the 2004 Festival but that was the last race he ever won. He then pulled up in the Scottish Grand National. In 2004-05 he finished a very distant eighth behind Slver Birch in the Becher Chase, pulled up in the National Hunt Handicap Chase and just sneaked in as first reserve at 100-1 in the National itself when he fell at Valentines first time (he was in last place at the time). The following season he pulled up in the Welsh National and after finishing unplaced in a hurdle at Cheltenham on New Years day his career under rules was over although he later ran in point to points in 2007 & 2008.
POLAR RED (1997) ch g Polar Falcon - Sharp Top (Sharpo) - Won 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 2001 & 2006. Smart performer on the flat winning five times. Won 2002 Imperial Cup at Sandown on what was only his fifth start over hurdles. As a result of that victory he was fancied to gain his connections a £60,000 bonus by winning the County Hurdle at the Festival the following week. He didn't and finished unplaced. After Cheltenham his next run was when he finished unplaced in the William Hill November Handicap back on the level. Showed little in handicap hurdles the following season but won his first two starts over fences (both at Chepstow). From 2004-05 season was campaigned both over hurdles and fences and considering he had never run over two and a half miles he was a surprising entry in 2005 but belied his odds and was with the leaders two fences from home before weakening to finish tenth. The following season he finished seventh in the Topham and was unplaced in the Scottish National on his final start over rules. He later ran three times in Irish point to points without making the frame.
SHAMAWAN (IRE) (1995) b g Kris - Shamawana (Darshaan) - Won 3 chases between 1999 & 2005. Won a maiden at Newbury on the flat. On the whole lightly raced and didn`t hit the headlines in a career with a highlight being victory in small race at Ascot in November 2002. Never got into the 2005 National and finished last of the twenty one finishers. Last raced at Chepstow in December 2005.
SIMPLY GIFTED (1995) b g Simply Great - Souveniers (Relko) - Won 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 1998 & 2006. A winner on the flat he won on his debut over hurdles at Wetherby and finished seventh in the 1999 Triumph. Missed the following season but showed he was a reasonable novice chaser finishing third in the mud in the 2001 Maghull Novices Chase on Grand National day. Unconsidered at 66-1 in the National (he had finished third in the Mildmay of Flete at the Festival) but belied those odds to finish fourteen lengths behind runaway winner Hedgehunter in third place. He only raced three more times last seeing a racecourse at Hereford in December 2006.
SPOT THEDIFFERENCE (IRE) (1993) b g Lafontaine - Spooted Choice (Callernish) - Won 14 chases between 1998 & 2007. Unraced over hurdles and started his career in point to points and hunter chases. Won three chases back to back in the summer of 2001. He was a regular at Aintree first running in the 2000 Foxhunters where he finished eighth. He ran in another Foxhunters in 2003 where he unseated at Valentines and competed in three Nationals without ever troubling the leaders. However it is not as an Aintree horse that his one will be remembered but as the undisputed king of the Cheltenham Cross Country course. Cheltenham stages three cross country events a year, one each at the Open and December meetings and from 2005 one at the Festival. Between November 2004 and November 2007 he ran in every race. His record was incredible 1111021141. He won the November race four consecutive years and was retired after an emotional seventh victory on the course. Worryingly he slipped and fell after he passed the post. Fortunately he had done no lasting damage but was retired immediately. A truly wonderful horse. Oh.... and he also won the four mile La Touche Cup over the Punchestown banks twice in 2004 and 2007.
STRONG RESOLVE (1996) gr g Roselier - Formerette (Teoface) - Won a hurdle and 7 chases between 2001 & 2008. Mediocre hurdler who finally won over timber at the nineteenth attempt when he picked up a small race at Ayr. Better chaser winning four more times at Ayr. Had each way claims for the 2005 National but finished seventeenth after making a monumental mess of the water. Fell early in the 2005 Becher Chase and was a distant seventh in the Welsh National. Occupied the same position in the 2007 Scottish National. Last seen out in the Ayr marathon the following year.
