Twenty one rides

Richard Johnson (97-16, 19) - Rode in 20 consecutive Nationals and in 2013 surpassed Michael Scudamores record of 16 straight rides. Second is the best he managed on Whats Up Boys in 2002 and Balthazar King in 2015.

Twenty rides

A.P McCoy (95-96, 98-15) - The greatest jockey of all time, he only missed the National once in his remarkable career. Nothing I can write here will ever do him justice. Won on Don't Push It in 2010 on his fifteenth start. Finished third four times.

Tom Scudamore (01-10, 12-19, 21-22) - Ten of his rides completed but he never finished better than sixth

Nineteen rides

Paul Carberry (94, 96-00, 02-08, 10-15) - won on Bobbyjo in 1999 and second on King Johns Castle in 2008 (also got left at the start on the same horse in 2010)

Eighteen rides

Barry Geraghty (00-14, 16-18) - won on Montys Pass in 2003 and was twice placed on Slim Pickings - eleven completions in total

Seventeen rides

Timmy Murphy (97-13) - Seventeen consecutive rides, he finished second on Smarty in 2001 and of course rode Comply or Die victorious in 2008

Davy Russell (03-12, 14, 16-19, 22-23) - Won on Tiger Roll in 2018 & 2019 and finished third on Saint Are in 2017. Announced he would retire on Grand National day 2023 but only got as far as the first fence in his final Nartional ride.

Fifteen rides

Aiden Coleman (08-19, 21-23) - Only completed five times times and he missed winner on Mon Mome in 2009. He did finish second on Balko des  Flos in 2021

Noel Fehily (01-09, 12-17) - Only completed four times, fourth on Blaklion on his final ride was his best placing.

Carl Llewellyn (88-89, 92, 95-06) - Two spare rides, two wins on Party Politics in 1992 and Earth Summit in 1998

Fourteen rides

David Casey (00-04, 06-13, 15) - Five finishes, third on Snowy Morning in 2008

Richard Dunwoody (85-92, 94-99) - Rode in fourteen consecutive Nationals (would have been fifteen if we included the void race of 1993). Rode West Tip in his first five Nationals winning in 1986 and also won on Miinnehoma in 1994. Also finished runner up on West Tip in 1989 and third on three of his last four rides (Superior Finish, Samlee & Call It A Day)

Robert Thornton (97-09, 11) - Two first fence falls and only four finishes with a fifth being his best placing.

Andrew Thornton (96-05, 07, 12, 13, 16) - Fourth was his best placing on St Mellion Fairway in 1998

Ruby Walsh (00-03, 05-09, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19) - Ten completions. Won twice on Papillon in 2000 and Hedgehunter in 2005. Also finished second on Hedgehunter the following year and third on Kingsmark in 2002, My Will in 2009 and Rathvinden in 2019.

Thirteen rides

Graham Bradley (83-86, 89-92, 94-95, 97-99) - Finished second on Suny Bay in 1998. Completed four times.

Mick Fitzgerald (95-00, 02-08) - Won on Rough Quest in 1996 but only managed to finish on one other occasion - suffered career ending spinal injuries on what was to be his final National ride in 2008 on L`Ami at the second fence.

Twelve rides

Jason Maguire (01-03, 05-13) - Missed out on Silver Birch but rode Ballabriggs to victory in 2013 and became the first National winner to enter the winners enclosure on foot without his horse

Paul Moloney (02, 04, 07-16) - Failed to finish in his first four rides but thereafter has had the most amazing record which reads 4344244 - all carrying the same colours (second on Cappa Bleu in 2013). Finished on his final ride as well.

Robbie Power (05, 07-09, 11-14, 17-19, 22) - Won on Silver Birch in 2007 

Tom O`Brien (07-10, 13-19, 22) - Finished second on McKelvey on his first ride

Peter Scudamore (81-92) - Rode in twelve consecutive Nationals and retired a few days after the void race in 1993. Never won but finished third on Corbiere in 1985. Completed nine times and always completed the first circuit.

Eleven rides

Paddy Brennan (05, 07-10, 12, 15-19) - Finished 2nd on Saint Are in 2015 , his first completion.

Tony Dobbin (94, 97, 99-01, 03-08) - Rode Lord Gyllene to a stunning victory in 1997.

Conor O`Dwyer (92, 94-97, 99, 02-06) - Never bettered his first ride when he finished third on Lauras Beau.

Joe Tizzard (97-01, 03-08, 10) - Seventeen when he made his debut he only completed the course twice.

Ten rides

Leighton Aspell - (03-07, 11, 14-17) - Won two years in a row on Pineau de Re & Many Clouds (2014 & 2015), also finished third on Supreme Glory in 2003

Hywel Davies (81-83, 85-86, 88-92) - Rode Last Suspect

Ben de Haan (81-84, 86-88, 90-92) - Rode Corbiere.

Richard Guest (92, 94-96, 98-03) - Finished second on Romany King on his debut and won the infamous 2001 race on Red Marauder.

Steve Smith-Eccles (80-87, 90, 92) - Third on Classified in 1986 was his best placing.

Mr Sam Waley-Cohen (07, 09, 11, 13-17, 21-22) - Twice placed on Oscar Time finishing second in 2011 and fourth in 2013. Won on Noble Yeats in 2022 on what was his last ride having announced his retirement two days earlier. Was the most successful jockey over the National fences winning two Tophams, two Foxhunters and one Becher Chase - see Jockeys 2 page.

John White (84-91, 94-95) - Won the National that never was on Esha Ness in 1993. When it counted he finished second on The Tsarevich in 1987.

Norman Williamson (90-91, 94-95, 97-02) - Completed the course seven times. Second on Mely Moss in 2000 was his best effort.

Nine rides

Neale Doughty (82-84, 86, 88-92) - Won on Hallo Dandy in 1984 and had the most amazing record completing the course eight times. He also finished third on Rinus in 1990.

Chris Grant (81, 83, 86, 88-92, 94) - The "nearly man" of Aintree finishing second three times on Young Driver in 1986 and twice on Durham Edition in 1988 & 1990. He finished second in several other races over the National course but never tasted victory. 

Brian Harding (99-01, 04-06, 08-09, 14) - Third on Simply Gifted in 2005

Graham McCourt (83-86, 89, 91-92, 94-95) - Four of his Nationals ended at the very first fence - the most falls at the first by any modern day jockey (83-Mid Day Gun, 85-Talon, 86-Port Askaig, 94-Elfast) 

Eight rides

Tommy Carmody (79-80, 85-86, 88-90) - Finished second on Greasepaint in 1984

Dominic Elsworth (03-08, 11-13)

Graham Lee (03-07, 09-11) - Rode Amberleigh House

Jamie Moore (03, 06-07, 11-14, 17) 

Richard Rowe (80, 83-88, 90) - Three of his Nationals ended at the first fence.

Charlie Swan (90-92, 94-98) - Completed the course five times. Fifth on his first ride was his best placing.

Seven rides

Jim Culloty (97, 00-05) - First ride ended at the first but he picked up a spare ride on Bindaree and won in 2002 - the only time he rode the horse

Dean Gallagher (91, 95, 98-02)

Philip Hide (95-01) - Five of his rides were on Aintree stalwart Brave Highlander

Andrew McNamara (06-11, 13)

Warren Marston (95-96, 00-04) - Chose the wrong one in 1995 and missed out on Royal Athletes victory

Chris Maude (95-01) - Great record in supporting races but two of his Nationals ended at the first fence

Brendan Powell (87-90, 95-99, 00) - Rode my favourite National winner of all time Rhyme `n` Reason in 1988

Mark Richards (87-88, 90-92, 94, 97)

Tom Taaffe (82, 84-86, 88, 90) - Rode Monanore to finish third in 1988

Andrew Tinkler (04, 06, 08-10, 12, 14)

Six rides

Nina Carberry (06, 10-12, 15-16) - Sister of Paul and Philip. No women has ridden so many times over the National fences. Won the Foxhunters. Completed the course four times

Brian Cooper (12, 14, 16, 17, 21-22) - Chose the wrong one in 2016

Thierry Doumen (98, 00-04) - No French jockey has ridden so often in the race.

Seamus Durack (98, 00-01, 03-05)

Mark Dwyer (86-88, 91-92, 94-95) - Finished third on Auntie Dot in 1991 and second on Party Politics in 1995

Wayne Hutchinson (07, 09-10, 12, 14-15) 

Tom Jenks (94-96, 99-00, 02) - Missed out on Earth Summits victory due to a broken leg and lost the ride a year later but did gain some compensation with Earth Summit winning the Becher Chase in 1998.

Andrew Lynch (11-12, 14-16, 18)

Jimmy McCarthy (00-02, 04-05, 07)

Richie McGrath (98, 02, 04, 06-08) - Only finished the course once in 2004

Simon McNeill (87, 89-90, 95, 97-98) - Only ever finished on his first start but blazed the trail on Greenhill Tare Way until four out in 1998.

Niall "slippers" Madden (06-07, 09-10, 12-13) - Won on his first ride on Numbersixvalverde

Kevin Mooney (78, 83-85, 89-90) - Finished three times, twice finished last on Never Rock in 1978 and Bob Tidsall in 1990 and a very distant second last on Sidbury Hill in 1989

Peter Niven (91-93, 94-95, 97, 00)

Jamie Osborne (90-92, 94-95, 97) - Rode Suny Bay in 1997

Mark Perrett (83, 87-88, 91, 94-95)

Ms Katie Walsh (12-14, 16-18) - Third on Seabass in 2012 was until 2021 the best performance by a lady rider

Mr Marcus Armytage (87, 90-91, 95-96) - won on Mr Frisk in 1990 - smashed the course record, Michael Bowlby (88-92) - fell at the first on his first ride and then completed the next four, Peter Buchanon (05-06, 11, 13-14), Davy Condon (07, 10, 12, 14-15) - his fall on Portrait King in 2015 sadly ended his career, Rodney Farant (94-95, 98-99, 01), Barry Fenton (99-00, 02, 04, 07), Jimmy Frost (89-91, 94, 99) - won on Little Polveir on his first ride, Rodie Greene (92, 01, 03-04, 06), Paul Holley (92, 94-95, 97-98), Adrian Maguire (94-95, 99-01) - completed on all bar his last ride - finished third on Moorcroft Boy in 1994, Robbie Supple (91-92, 94, 97, 00) - finished third on Niki Dee in 2000, Christian Williams (05-06, 08-10) - finished second on Royal Auclair in 2005, Lorcan Wyer (90, 92, 97-99) - finished second on Blue Charm in 1999.
